Federal agents are also scrutinizing Mr. Cohens personal financial dealings and whether he committed fraud by lying about his assets on bank forms. In particular, the authorities are scrutinizing taxi medallions that Mr. Cohen owned, and whether he accurately accounted for their value, according to several people close to the case.

It cant be more than a minute and a half, Mr. Giuliani said, referring to the length of the conversation. Twice someone walks in someone brings soda in for them. Its not some secret conversation.

He added: Neither one seems to be concerned anyone would hear it. It went off on irrelevant subjects that have nothing to do with this. Its a very professional conversation between a client and a lawyer and the client saying, Do it right.

Because the tape showed Mr. Trump learning about the A.M.I. payment, it actually helps Mr. Trump, Mr. Giuliani argued. In the big scheme of things, its powerful exculpatory evidence, he said.
The recording is potential evidence in the campaign finance investigation, but became tied up in a legal fight over what materials are protected by attorney-client privilege and thus off limits to prosecutors. It is not clear whether a federal judge has ruled on whether prosecutors can listen to the recording.

For a decade, Mr. Cohen served as one of Mr. Trumps most trusted fixers, aggressively taking on journalists, opposing lawyers and business adversaries. He frequently taped his conversations, unbeknown to the people with whom he was speaking. New York law allows one party to a conversation to tape conversations without the other knowing.

Mr. Cohen used to say he would take a bullet for Mr. Trump, but the relationship soured in the aftermath of the F.B.I. raids in April. In one conversation, Mr. Cohens lawyers inquired whether Mr. Trump planned to pardon him, but Mr. Trumps lawyers gave no indication that the president would do so, according to two people familiar with the discussion.

Mr. Cohen has publicly and privately discussed the idea of cooperating with the F.B.I. In an interview with ABC News this month, Mr. Cohen seemed to be openly inviting prosecutors to talk to him.

My wife, my daughter and my son have my first loyalty and always will, Mr. Cohen said. I put family and country first. The words got Mr. Trumps attention, and he asked people if they thought Mr. Cohen was trying to send a message, either to him or the Justice Department.

The Cohen investigation began with the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, who is investigating the Trump campaigns links to Russia. But as the Cohen case became increasingly focused on Mr. Cohens personal business dealings and his campaign activities unrelated to Russia, Mr. Mueller referred it to federal prosecutors in Manhattan, who are now leading the investigation.

The wide-ranging search warrants served on Mr. Cohen this spring show that prosecutors are investigating Mr. Cohens involvement in payments to silence women about their relationships with Mr. Trump. In addition to Ms. McDougals arrangement, prosecutors also sought evidence of payments to the adult film star Stephanie Clifford, who is better known as Stormy Daniels.
Mr. Trump has denied knowing about those payments, though people familiar with the arrangement have said he was aware of them. But his denial helped suppress public allegations of an affair during the final months of the campaign.

Such payments, depending on how and why they were made, could represent campaign finance violations a case that harks back to the failed prosecution of the former Democratic senator John Edwards, who tried to hide a pregnant mistress during his presidential campaign.

Mr. Cohens case is unusual because the payment to Ms. McDougal was made by American Media Inc. In August 2016, A.M.I. bought the rights to her story about Mr. Trump for $150,000 and a commitment to use its magazines to promote her career as a fitness specialist.

WASHINGTON President Trumps longtime lawyer, Michael D. Cohen, secretly recorded a conversation with Mr. Trump two months before the presidential election in which they discussed payments to a former Playboy model who said she had an affair with Mr. Trump, according to lawyers and others familiar with the recording.

The F.B.I. seized the recording this year during a raid on Mr. Cohens office. The Justice Department is investigating Mr. Cohens involvement in paying women to tamp down embarrassing news stories about Mr. Trump ahead of the 2016 election. Prosecutors want to know whether that violated federal campaign finance laws, and any conversation with Mr. Trump about those payments would be of keen interest to them.

The recordings existence appears to undercut the Trump campaigns denial of any knowledge of payments to the model. And it further draws Mr. Trump into questions about tactics he and his associates used to keep aspects of his personal and business life a secret. And it highlights the potential legal and political danger that Mr. Cohen represents to Mr. Trump. Once the keeper of many of Mr. Trumps secrets, Mr. Cohen is now seen as increasingly willing to consider cooperating with prosecutors.

The former model, Karen McDougal, says she began a nearly yearlong affair with Mr. Trump in 2006, shortly after Mr. Trumps wife, Melania, gave birth to their son Barron. Ms. McDougal sold her story for $150,000 to The National Enquirer, which was supportive of Mr. Trump, during the final months of the presidential campaign, but the tabloid sat on the story, which kept it from becoming public. The practice, known as catch and kill, effectively silenced Ms. McDougal for the remainder of the campaign.

Rudolph W. Giuliani, Mr. Trumps personal lawyer, confirmed in a telephone conversation on Friday that Mr. Trump had discussed payments to Ms. McDougal with Mr. Cohen on the tape. He said the recording was less than two minutes long, said Mr. Trump did not know he was being recorded and claimed that the president had done nothing wrong.

Mr. Giuliani said there was no indication on the tape that Mr. Trump knew before the conversation about the payment from the Enquirers parent company, American Media Inc., to Ms. McDougal.

Nothing in that conversation suggests that he had any knowledge of it in advance, Mr. Giuliani said.

Mr. Giuliani initially indicated the men discussed a payment from Mr. Trump to Ms. McDougal separate from the Enquirers payment to buy her story. Later, he said that Mr. Trump and Mr. Cohen had actually discussed buying the rights to Ms. McDougals story from the Enquirer, a move that would have effectively reimbursed the newspaper for its payments to her.

That payment was never made, Mr. Giuliani said, adding that Mr. Trump had told Mr. Cohen that if he were to make a payment related to Ms. McDougal, to write a check rather than send cash, so it could be properly documented.
Neither of Mr. Giulianis descriptions of the conversations explains why, when The Wall Street Journal revealed the existence of the A.M.I. payment days before the election, Mr. Trumps campaign spokeswoman, Hope Hicks, said, We have no knowledge of any of this. She said Ms. McDougals claim of an affair was totally untrue.

Mr. Cohens lawyers discovered the recording as part of their review of the seized materials and shared it with Mr. Trumps lawyers, according to three people briefed on the matter.

Mr. Cohen rejected repeated requests for comment. We have nothing to say on this matter, Mr. Cohens lawyer, Lanny J. Davis, said when asked about the tape.

David J. Pecker, the chairman of A.M.I., is a friend of Mr. Trumps, and Ms. McDougal has accused Mr. Cohen of secretly taking part in the deal an allegation that is now part of the F.B.I. investigation.

FrndNhbrHdCEman

We still do not know what hold Vladimir Putin has on Donald Trump, but the whole world has now witnessed the power of its grip.

Russia helped Donald Trump into the presidency, as Robert Muellers indictment vividly details. Putin, in his own voice, has confirmed that he wanted Trump elected. Standing alongside his benefactor, Trump denounced the special counsel investigating Russian intervention in the U.S. electionand even repudiated his own intelligence appointees.

This is an unprecedented situation, but not an uncontemplated one. At the 1787 convention in Philadelphia, the authors of the Constitution worried a great deal about foreign potentates corrupting the American presidency.

When Gouverneur Morris famously changed his mind in favor of an impeachment clause, he explained his new point of view by invoking a situation very similar to the one now facing the United States:

Our Executive was not like a Magistrate having a life interest, much less like one having an hereditary interest in his office. He may be bribed by a greater interest to betray his trust; and no one would say that we ought to expose ourselves to the danger of seeing the first Magistrate in foreign pay without being able to guard [against] it by displacing him.

The United States was then a comparatively poor and vulnerable country, so the Founders imagined corruption taking the form of some princely emolument that would enable an ex-president to emigrate andin the words of Charles Cotesworth Pinckneylive in greater splendor in another country than his own. Yet they understood that even the most developed countries were not immune to the suborning of their leaders. As Morris said, "One would think the King of England well secured [against] bribery Yet Charles II was bribed by Louis XIV.
The reasons for Trumps striking behaviorwhether he was bribed or blackmailed or something elseremain to be ascertained. That he has publicly refused to defend his countrys independent electoral processand did so jointly with the foreign dictator who perverted that processis video-recorded fact.

And its a fact that has to be seen in the larger context of his actions in office: denouncing the European Union as a foe, threatening to break up nato, wrecking the U.S.-led world trading system, intervening in both U.K. and German politics in support of extremist and pro-Russian forces, and continually refusing to act to protect the integrity of U.S. voting systemsit all adds up to a political indictment, whether or not it quite qualifies as a criminal one.

America is a very legalistic society, in which public discussion often deteriorates into lawyers arguing about whether any statutes have been violated. But confronting the country in the wake of Helsinki is this question: Can it afford to wait to ascertain why Trump has subordinated himself to Putin after the president has so abjectly demonstrated that he has subordinated himself? Robert Mueller is leading a legal process. The United States faces a national-security emergency.

Trump's modus operandi since at least 2016 has been to preemptively whine and accuse Democrats of doing something, any time he's actually engaged in the act in question, to muddy any criticism leveled at him when it's discovered.

The action of the FBI towards the election in general, for example. They publicly announced Clinton's case was being reopened a week before the election just because they found emails on Carlos Danger's laptop w/o knowing if any would even be relevant to said case (turns out they weren't, whoops!). Meanwhile they had all these leads into Russian hacking of the DNC servers and meeting w/ Republican officials yet said nothing about it.
But because Trump cried that the election was rigged, it doesn't even matter to his base anymore. If the FBI played favorites w/ Trump, he still points and says, "see it is rigged!" (in his favor...) and gets his base to distrust the FBI as it finally investigates him.

To the trolls (you know who you are): I voted for Gary Johnson, a former 2 term Republican governor, so fuck off. I don't even like Hillary despite the inevitable mewling from you that I do.

Two weeks before his inauguration, Donald J. Trump was shown highly classified intelligence indicating that President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia had personally ordered complex cyberattacks to sway the 2016 American election

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/18/world/europe/trump-intelligence-russian-election-meddling-.html

WASHINGTON Two weeks before his inauguration, Donald J. Trump was shown highly classified intelligence indicating that President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia had personally ordered complex cyberattacks to sway the 2016 American election.

The evidence included texts and emails from Russian military officers and information gleaned from a top-secret source close to Mr. Putin, who had described to the C.I.A. how the Kremlin decided to execute its campaign of hacking and disinformation.

Mr. Trump sounded grudgingly convinced, according to several people who attended the intelligence briefing. But ever since, Mr. Trump has tried to cloud the very clear findings that he received on Jan. 6, 2017, which his own intelligence leaders have unanimously endorsed.

The shifting narrative underscores the degree to which Mr. Trump regularly picks and chooses intelligence to suit his political purposes. That has never been more clear than this week.
On Monday, standing next to the Russian president in Helsinki, Finland, Mr. Trump said he accepted Mr. Putins denial of Russian election intrusions. By Tuesday, faced with a bipartisan political outcry, Mr. Trump sought to walk back his words and sided with his intelligence agencies.

On Wednesday, when a reporter asked, Is Russia still targeting the U.S.? Mr. Trump shot back, No directly contradicting statements made only days earlier by his director of national intelligence, Dan Coats, who was sitting a few chairs away in the Cabinet Room. (The White House later said he was responding to a different question.)
Hours later, in a CBS News interview, Mr. Trump seemed to reverse course again. He blamed Mr. Putin personally, but only indirectly, for the election interference by Russia, because hes in charge of the country.

In the run-up to this weeks ducking and weaving, Mr. Trump has done all he can to suggest other possible explanations for the hacks into the American political system. His fear, according to one of his closest aides who spoke on the condition of anonymity, is that any admission of even an unsuccessful Russian attempt to influence the 2016 vote raises questions about the legitimacy of his presidency.

The Jan. 6, 2017, meeting, held at Trump Tower, was a prime example. He was briefed that day by John O. Brennan, the C.I.A. director; James R. Clapper Jr., the director of national intelligence; and Adm. Michael S. Rogers, the director of the National Security Agency and the commander of United States Cyber Command.

The F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, was also there; after the formal briefing, he privately told Mr. Trump about the Steele dossier. That report, by a former British intelligence officer, included uncorroborated salacious stories of Mr. Trumps activities during a visit to Moscow, which he denied.

According to nearly a dozen people who either attended the meeting with the president-elect or were later briefed on it, the four primary intelligence officials described the streams of intelligence that convinced them of Mr. Putins role in the election interference.

They included stolen emails from the Democratic National Committee that had been seen in Russian military intelligence networks by the British, Dutch and American intelligence services. Officers of the Russian intelligence agency formerly known as the G.R.U. had plotted with groups like WikiLeaks on how to release the email stash.

And ultimately, several human sources had confirmed Mr. Putins own role.

The significance of that image is somewhat lost on a modern audience, but when it was taken in 1989, it was a huge deal. That picture was taken in the Midmay Clinic, one of the handful of HIV hospitals in Britain. That man died of AIDS a couple weeks later. The stigma around HIV/AIDS at the time was so bad that banks wouldn't loan money to employees of that clinic, bricks were periodically thrown through the windows, and many of the clinic's patients were completely estranged. And Diana shook his hand because she felt that showing compassion and humanity to victims of AIDS was more important than fearing them; a nearly unprecedented attitude to have at the time.

Trump suggested she had AIDS because he was ignorant and afraid.

President Trump said on Wednesday he does not believe Russia is still targeting the United States, contradicting U.S. intelligence assessments that Moscow was continuing to meddle in American elections. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-russia/asked-if-russia-still-targeting-u-s-trump-says-no-idUSKBN1K82AV?feedType=RSS

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he does not believe Russia is still targeting the United States, contradicting U.S. intelligence assessments that Moscow was continuing its attempts to meddle in American elections.

Trump on Tuesday tried to walk back comments that he believed Russian President Vladimir Putin over American intelligence chiefs on Russian interference in the 2016 election, saying that he had misspoken a day earlier after a summit meeting with Putin in Helsinki.

Asked by reporters on Wednesday if Russia was still targeting the United States, Trump shook his head and said, No.

U.S. intelligence officials have said Russian election interference efforts are continuing and now target the upcoming congressional elections in November.

Trump has been scrambling to undo the damage from his comments on Monday in which he gave credence to Putins denials over the conclusions of American intelligence services.

Were doing very well, probably as well as anybody has ever done with Russia. And theres been no president ever as tough as I have been on Russia, Trump told reporters before a Cabinet meeting at the White House.

U.S. Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats told a congressional committee in February that he already had seen evidence Russia was targeting U.S. elections in November, when Republican control of the House of Representatives and Senate are at stake, plus a host of positions in state governments.

In rebutting Trumps dismissive comments about U.S. intelligence on Monday, Coats said in a statement, We have been clear in our assessments of Russian meddling in the 2016 election and their ongoing, pervasive efforts to undermine our democracy.

According to the conventional wisdom of the internet, theres one simple guideline for responding to trolls: dont feed them. Ignore them, dont react to them, dont give them the attention they want. The axiom has become such a reflexive piece of advice and assumed knowledge that it can often be difficult to see the misperceptions and dismissiveness at its heart, the four hideous lies that perpetuate the cycle of misunderstanding, and the grim, cruel reality it has helped to enable in online culture.

The first great lie is about the sanctity of the past.

Recently, I tweeted about the pervasive nature of trolling and how people have always excused online behavior that is largely inexcusable. Almost immediately, a professor in London chastised that idea. He insisted that there was indeed a golden age for trolling, especially for those of us who can actually remember the eternal September, the month in 1993 when a huge influx of America Online users began to overwhelm the online culture and norms of Usenet.

Reader, I laughed. It is unsurprising for a distinguished professor to engage in this kind of gatekeeper behavior. After all, his esteem rests on the fact that he knows certain things that others do not. Like all gatekeeper behavior, it was ostensibly a check on the credibility of the target. Also like all gatekeeper behavior, it wasnt really about whether or not someone passes the test, but rather the gatekeeper feeling like they can control what is true and not true about the subject. Alas for him, I was there in 1993, too, equal parts young, nave, and shy, but so damn excited about the idea of suddenly communicating with people around the world. This was a new thing, after all. And I will never, ever forget my first reaction to dealing with strangers on the internet: Why is everyone so mean?

From Usenet to early online forums, it was all the same: insults, flame wars, secret languages and inside jokes, and the glad-handing justification that always accompanied it: they were simply trolling. It was all just a joke. When my confused little brain bumped up against this notion, there was an immediate pushback with the general sentiment of forget it, kid. Its internet town.

Some other gatekeeper might come along and say, Well, you just had to be there for Arpanet or [insert whatever period comes just before your own]. But it doesnt matter. Whether were talking about AOL, AIM, early 4chan, or the early days of Twitter, there has always been a myth about the time and place where things were more innocent, when trolling was all in good fun. But what everyone really remembers about these proverbial times isnt their purity. Its how they didnt see the big deal back then. They remember how they felt a sense of permission, a belief that it was all okay. But that was only true for those who were like them, who thought exactly like they did. All the while, someone else was getting stepped on and bullied while others laughed. The story of the internet has always been the same story: disaffected young men thinking their boorish and cruel behavior was justified or permissible.

And it was always wrong.

http://thehill.com/blogs/in-the-know/in-the-know/397070-princes-william-and-charles-refused-to-meet-trump-report

Prince Charles and Prince William refused to meet with President Trump during his visit to the United Kingdom, according to London newspaper The Sunday Times.

A source familiar with the planning for the president and first lady Melania Trump's meeting with Queen Elizabeth II told the Times that Charles and William made it clear that they did not want to participate.

This business of Prince Charles and Prince William not being there for the Trump visit was a snub, the source told the paper. They simply refused to attend. Its a very, very unusual thing for the queen to be there on her own. Usually she is accompanied by somebody. Prince Charles has been substituting for Philip a lot recently.

Prince Philip, who, at 97, has officially retired from royal duties, goes to what he wants to go to, the source said, adding that if he had wanted to be there he could have been.

The Trumps met with the queen on Friday for tea at Windsor Castle, sparking social media backlash among the British public after video showed the president walking in front of the queen. The move was seen as a sign of disrespect, though it did not technically break royal protocol.

Charles reportedly attended a board meeting for his company and an event with Gloucestershire police, while William participated in a charity polo match and Prince Harry attended other private engagements, according to the Times.

Trumps visit was not a state visit, and other sources at Buckingham Palace and Downing Street told the Times that the plan had always been for Trump to meet solely with the queen, and denied the report that the refusal to meet with Trump was an intentional rebuke.

Former presidents have met with other members of the royal family in the past, and it is well-known that former President Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama are close with William and Harry and their families.

Neither the Trumps nor the Obamas were invited to Harrys wedding to American actress Meghan Markle earlier this year, as the couple did not invite any political leaders.

Trumps visit was marked by thousands of protesters greeting him in London and at his Turnberry golf course in Scotland. In an interview he gave to the tabloid The Sun, he also harshly criticized Prime Minister Theresa May.

In a 1997 radio interview with Howard Stern just months after Princess Dianas death, Donald Trump insisted that he could have had sex with the late British royal but only would have done so if she passed an HIV test first.
Trump claimed he was a brave soldier for avoiding STDs during his single years in the late 90s. It is my personal Vietnam, he said, also called womens vaginas potential landmines and noting, Theres some real danger there.
