Prince Charles and Prince William refused to meet with President Trump during his visit to the United Kingdom, according to London newspaper The Sunday Times.

A source familiar with the planning for the president and first lady Melania Trump's meeting with Queen Elizabeth II told the Times that Charles and William made it clear that they did not want to participate.

This business of Prince Charles and Prince William not being there for the Trump visit was a snub, the source told the paper. They simply refused to attend. Its a very, very unusual thing for the queen to be there on her own. Usually she is accompanied by somebody. Prince Charles has been substituting for Philip a lot recently.

Prince Philip, who, at 97, has officially retired from royal duties, goes to what he wants to go to, the source said, adding that if he had wanted to be there he could have been.

The Trumps met with the queen on Friday for tea at Windsor Castle, sparking social media backlash among the British public after video showed the president walking in front of the queen. The move was seen as a sign of disrespect, though it did not technically break royal protocol.

Charles reportedly attended a board meeting for his company and an event with Gloucestershire police, while William participated in a charity polo match and Prince Harry attended other private engagements, according to the Times.

Trumps visit was not a state visit, and other sources at Buckingham Palace and Downing Street told the Times that the plan had always been for Trump to meet solely with the queen, and denied the report that the refusal to meet with Trump was an intentional rebuke.

Former presidents have met with other members of the royal family in the past, and it is well-known that former President Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama are close with William and Harry and their families.

Neither the Trumps nor the Obamas were invited to Harrys wedding to American actress Meghan Markle earlier this year, as the couple did not invite any political leaders.

Trumps visit was marked by thousands of protesters greeting him in London and at his Turnberry golf course in Scotland. In an interview he gave to the tabloid The Sun, he also harshly criticized Prime Minister Theresa May.

In a 1997 radio interview with Howard Stern just months after Princess Dianas death, Donald Trump insisted that he could have had sex with the late British royal but only would have done so if she passed an HIV test first.
Trump claimed he was a brave soldier for avoiding STDs during his single years in the late 90s. It is my personal Vietnam, he said, also called womens vaginas potential landmines and noting, Theres some real danger there.

Trump has no reason to care, and he's going to let us know this loudly and babyishly on his Twitter.

Who cares? The royal family has nothing to do with international trade and Trump is not royalty himself.

Now, if Trump was legitimately a Marquis or something, then this would be an offense.

If someone talked about how they could have fucked my dead mother they'd likely get a bullet to the head. William and Charles refusing to meet with him is an extremely courteous gesture given the context.

Why would Princess Diana have AID's, ok?

The significance of that image is somewhat lost on a modern audience, but when it was taken in 1989, it was a huge deal. That picture was taken in the Midmay Clinic, one of the handful of HIV hospitals in Britain. That man died of AIDS a couple weeks later. The stigma around HIV/AIDS at the time was so bad that banks wouldn't loan money to employees of that clinic, bricks were periodically thrown through the windows, and many of the clinic's patients were completely estranged. And Diana shook his hand because she felt that showing compassion and humanity to victims of AIDS was more important than fearing them; a nearly unprecedented attitude to have at the time.

Trump suggested she had AIDS because he was ignorant and afraid.

This is how to take a statement that sounds good and make it bad. You sit down with people you don't like when you need to. You don't have to sit down with an ass clown for no reason at all.

Now, to be fair, just about everyone was scared of AIDS in 1989 (because it was ****ing terrifying), and researching it was very hard (both because the scientific literature on the disease was limited and because the Internet didn't exist in anything remotely resembling its current form). Being ignorant and scared was pretty understandable. Letting that ignorance and fear drive him to be that much of an asshole, however, is much less forgivable.

Especially given that he said that much later than 1989. It's an appalling attitude to perpetuate in the late 90s.
