Which game do you prefer?

I know the story for Remake is not done, but what are your thoughts on this comparison so far.

I actually think I like Remake more.

I think Part 1 of Remake alone was better than the entirety of original FF7

I almost always prefer remakes to the originals but I just did not enjoy Remake at all. The graphics were obviously better and the characters were much more developed but I didn't care for the gameplay or the story. By the end I was just waiting impatiently for it to be over

I think the original is quite overrated and it probably doesn't make my top 5 Final Fantasy games, but I do like it, it's just not one of my favorite games.

Remake added a lot of good stuff but it's inferior to the original for the ghosts alone. Always killed the pacing and momentum whenever that became the focus.

i voted remake because I still enjoyed it more just due to the modernity and gameplay improvements, but the way the story plays out only makes sense in the context of the original. it's not it's own consistent work, more of an add-on to the original. so saying it's strictly better isn't really fair. but I still enjoyed it more. I guess I don't think it's as simple as a 1 or 2 poll

oh I get it! Thats fair. Thats why I worded the pill as which do you prefer rather than one being better.

Yeah I didn't like it when Umineko did that either

But I also don't expect Remake to completely become its own story

But...they don't. Barret dying was one of the most exciting scenes in the remake, and the ghosts undid it. If anything, they represent Nomura and his desire to Kingdom Hearts it up.

Well the ghosts undid it because that isn't what happened in the original... so they represent the fans who want the story to stay the same.

They are there to keep things exactly as they were in the original. They only turn up if someone tries to change something.

Great addition, and the better of the two games!

Exactly. The ghosts represent the players who wanted just a complete remake with the updated graphics and gameplay. I think this is just going to end up being they are different but enjoy both

And honestly, changing things is at least a bit of an attempt to be fresh in a stagnant industry, so it doesnt deserve hate. Yes, so far I think the original was a fair bit better, but I enjoyed the remake for what it offered so far.

But again, the ghosts themselves are the biggest change. Most of the changes are alright, though taking out a bunch of the deaths kinda reduces the game's impact, it's just that the ghosts are never particularly interesting when they're there.

The ghosts are there to keep everything in line with the original. They represent the fans. It isn't particularly difficult to see this.

Yes they are new in the remake, but so is the size of the existing fanbase at the time of FF7 vs FF7R. Its not particularly complex of a concept but whatever.

This just isn't true. The biggest change about FF7R is that it's a different game! The battle system is different. The side content is different. The writing and plotting is different. Certain characters are aware of things being different! If you take out the ghosts there would be even more deviations in the plot. It's not about the ghosts themselves.

The differences mostly feel like updates or expansions or reimaginings of stuff from the original. Even stuff like Aeris/Sephiroth/Cloud seeing visions of the future/alternate timelines isn't that crazy. The ghosts are the only things that feel like an outright change to me. The other changes all feel very "Final Fantasy VII, but updated" while the ghosts feel like "this is Kingdom Hearts now"

The original story had nothing to do with multiple timelines, it is strictly Kingdom Hearts shenanigans and trying to be clever with the meta of it being a remake.

I think that bothers me even more than the existence of changes at all. Just be different if you want to be, its so dumb to draw attention to it.

I mean, not really. Sephiroth clones aren't actually different versions of Sephiroth. Certainly not in the same way Kingdom Hearts did with all the different versions of Xehanort.

FF7R does not take away from the original. The only mistake they did was called it a remake when it should have been called a re-imagining.

Loooooooove FF7R, think it's my #14 all time, and FF7 is back at #21 or so.

I think the only thing I prefer about OG FF7 is the music. Orchestral-style stuff just doesn't hit the same, I like punchy catchy stuff.

But man, all the new stuff is just SOO good. Cloud and Barret went from meh to awesome, Tifa and Aeris went from cool to insanely-cool, I love Biggs/Wedge/Jessie so much, everything is super pretty, the combat is non-stop interesting throughout, the materia is fascinating, and all the new areas blew my mind (the shinra museum, the new honeybee inn, all of chapter 4, etc).

Loved the ghosts, I think that stuff is ingenious. I'm into corny symbolism stuff though.

I haven't played the remake, however I can say that even though I do enjoy some action RPG's, my love for JRPG's is too great to not pick the original. Newer graphics, voice acting, expanded story etc. is not enough to overcome that.

I prefer the original until Remake is finished, which has loads of potential. I enjoyed Remake a lot, but I have two real issues. One is that some of the levels drag on a bit too much, mostly because a lot of the sewer levels are really similar. The other is the ghosts. I don't mind changing things up at all, it would be very weird not to but it's way too meta. In-universe it makes so little sense to call the original story lines their destinies. I try to accept that perhaps the ghosts were always there making sure it went as it should we just didn't know, but they straight up undid things, it's not really possible. Stuff like healing Barret with their magical ghost powers was awful. Just keep him alive from the start. I don't like the idea that there are creates in my universe that knows that this is a remake and wants to make sure it goes as it should have. Fourth wall breaking is usually nice, but a story like this needs to function without it. At least they're gone, so they can make their changes without using them now.

The fact that we can speculate on whether she will live or die is kinda the genius behind Remake. One of the oldest video game spoilers is now no longer a spoiler, we actually don't know that she will die now.

It's a wonderful thing

I think they'll try to make everything feel really fresh, and put a lot of surprises in, but ultimately leave the main plot points the same.

Much like they did with this game!

Maybe they'll change the ending though, I don't think anyone's that particularly enthusiastic about the original ending. It's fine, but not amazing or anything.
