Those poor fictional bastards.

Well, that's the point isn't it? We've dissociated. We've dehumanized the populace because they don't matter, even if we at the same time give value to named and fleshed out characters.

Lots of games either don't address that dissociation or actively revel in it.

Take Musou/Warriors games. Thousands of soldiers die in every single battle in one of those games, yet no one really addresses it and it's all the hero characters speaking to each other as though they're the only people involved in the fight and all the soldiers are just blades of grass they're cutting down. Which they are, if you follow what the game wants to imply in its tone.

My favorite example I've found recently is in Fire Emblem Warriors. There are a couple of missions where your group runs into a character (Elise or Sakura), and a second character (Camilla or Hinoka) shows up saying "Oh you kidnapped *character*! Let's fight!" You'll have a normal battle because you couldn't talk the second character out of fighting and at the end everyone will say "Oh it was just a big misunderstanding!" And I'm like yeah, a misunderstanding that left thousands dead on the battlefield.

I'm not saying it's bad or anything. I'm just drawing attention to it as a bit of an absurdity very atypical of reality that we've grown accustomed to.

We can harm males and females and animals

An unasked question is "why can we do this"? And I think the answer is GTA. The old GTAs, that were 2D. Of course, there was a big to-do at the time about being able to run over bystander human beings even then, but it was ultimately brushed off as "they're just ten-pixel tall cartoon characters, who really cares?"

Fallout was coming out around the same time and had a similar situation: low-resolution humans with little characterization apart from the text thrown at you.

Then of course, games got more modern, graphics got 3D, models got more detailed and fleshed out and bystander people actually seemed like they had their own token level of characterization if you listened to them babble long enough.

But now the Pandora's Box was opened and we couldn't put that demon back, so every subsequent game in those series (as well as others that followed it) continued the tradition because why wouldn't it? Despite the fact that it can now seem a hell of a lot more cruel.

Probably the same reason you can drive through traffic light poles but not trees.

I think that's more of a graphics/physics/collision thing.

If a lamp post gets knocked over, it will clatter to the ground because it's just a stick, so laying horizontally isn't a big deal.

If a tree gets knocked over, you have to accommodate for there being a top with branches and foliage. Do you have it fall to its horizontal side? Then the branches clip through the ground. Do you have it collide at its edge, then you got a tree sitting weirdly at a diagonal. It's incredibly difficult (especially in the PS2 era) to get a tree to fall convincingly if it's anything but a trunk.

You can go another route and just have the tree disintegrate when you plow through it, but that's immersion breaking as well.

It's societal for the most part. The unspoken agreement of devs and publishers not to cross that cultural line.

In some countries it's illegal, but really I just think its about the fact that no one wants to be the big dev/publisher to cross that line and get that publicity.

Also it's pretty much understood that anyone who crosses that line would only be doing it for the shock value.

I mean there are games where kids die and in Walking Dead Season 1 you can have your character mercy kill a child, but it absolutely made narrative sense.

Got the Perfect Chronology edition.

My first try I think I got up to getting Aht and not much further. Second try I don't think I even got out of the mines/caves whatever.

This doesn't say too much of course, since progression can be pretty nonlinear for the game, but we're going to give it the old college try this time. I think I got distracted by "must plays" both of the previous times. My next "must play" is Yakuza 6 and we've got a cool two months until that drops.

Every one I talk to about this game is like dude play it all the way through because it's really good. I really want to give this game its due.

Honestly I hovered a bit over picking the "Friendly" difficulty, because I remember the combat being eh after a while, but I'm settling on Normal.

If I can chip in on the Battle of Coruscant discussion.

It's a mess, and it's not even strictly speaking "a battle". The opening tracking shot is cool to look at, but (while we're on the subject of over-analyzing things) it doesn't demonstrate how a battle like that would go. There are no lines. No formations. There are just Venators and Munificents dropped all over the battlefield like they were dumped out of a toy box into a jumble.

Furthermore, once the action switches to Anakin and Obi-Wan, the rest of the battle is effectively irrelevant. They go in, kill Dooku, chase Grievous around, and crash the Invisible Hand on-planet, and... I guess the battle in orbit is over? It's not like they showed us. :-P

If we're talking "polar opposite", then no. No matter what, we'd have to be able to find some kind of common ground or else the relationship doesn't really have a future.

I mean, I'm all for engaging with people with different political views than me, but I don't know if I could *live* with and raise children with someone that far on the other end of the scale.

Honestly, I'm a pretty politically minded person, and one of several things I'm looking for in a companion (and I feel we all do regardless of knowing it or not) is someone to sound off on ideas, opinions, and complaints, regardless of whether those are political, religious, social, anime, etc. If I come to my girlfriend and want to vent about something stupid the president did, I'd be looking for support and understanding, not an argument about how he's going to fix the country if we'd just give him a chance.

Fortunately I live in Mass right now, so I'm not especially worried about being too picky in that regard.

I thought TFA was so boring and the characters so boring and the dialogue so forced it turned me off to the idea of paying to watch TLJ.

That's fine if that's your opinion, but the question is: did your dislike of the film have anything to do with the characters' gender or skin color?

I mean, no, right? You said as much. So why does this subject keep coming up if it has nothing to do with the perceived lack of quality?

Are you accusing the writers and directors of spending valuable creativity points on "diversity" and fewer on "quality"? I mean, I'm not in the film industry, but I don't think that's how it works.

I picture a ludicrous scenario with Rian Johnson sitting in the director's chair like "Phew! Glad we got a woman as a lead! Now I can sit and relax and not work nearly as hard as I would if the lead were a man!"

Indeed. They're playing to the gamer crowd in a rather transparent attempt to appeal to the male youths and bolster the swell of the alt-right.

But anyway, I wouldn't accuse if I couldn't produce.

It wasn't this exact video, but this was the subject: the socialism of Venezuela, how it's apparently the single factor that ruined the country's economy, and how Bernie Sanders wants that for America. The channel is full of these types of videos: cherry-picking facts and giving surface-level analysis on complicated issues, the majority of them against the left, although they save a swipe or two for the Republican Party as well.

Of course, PU is but one of dozens of channels pushing libertarianism and being anti-left. The only thing I find remarkable about them is the way their ads find their way into gaming videos.

The idea is that the agenda is to heavily push Star Wars towards women, not to have it made by women.

I would think someone as smart as you would understand that.

Ah, you're sweet. In that case, then Kennedy is trying to sell Star Wars, her product to a market that doesn't buy as much.

That's called being a businessperson, not having a feminist agenda.
