This album isn't not my kind of music, but the parts I enjoyed the most were definitely the sort I'd need to be in the mood to really enjoy. As I was listening to the album I kept thinking of Aurelio Voltaire and, no surprise, he was influenced by Tom Waits. The creepy circus-polka-nightmare bits of the album are great, and if I ran a Halloween event of any sort I'd certainly want that kind of music to be played. It is pure nightmare fuel in the most fun of ways. However that is only half of what the album had to offer, and the other half was a mixed bag to say the least. It lacked a flow or narrative sense that I like to experience when listening to an album as a whole. It almost felt like the tracks were chosen completely at random. It's an okay album, I just wish the artist had one idea in mind.

The whole notion that people need to get dressed up super fancy for a wedding is ridiculous. It's just a post-industrial revolution means of scamming people out of their money. Now the fact that she doesn't look happy with him speaks volumes. Dude should have known better, and probably would have if they weren't both children that are too young to marry anyway. I'd take any odds on this being a shotgun wedding.

A lot of people would probably sleep on this album, but as far as dance-pop goes it shows a lot of range and intellect. You can hear bits and pieces of decades worth of inspiration that went into this work scattered throughout. The most stand out to me was the moment when a sample best known from 1997's "Your Woman" (White Town) plays, though it is itself a slightly altered sample from 1932's "My Woman" (Lew Stone & his Monseigneur Band). Generations on generations of collected knowledge. Is it perfect? Certainly not. Is it art? Absolutely. If there's one thing Andy Warhol got right it's this - something can be both art and a product meant for mass consumption.

1. Break My Heart
2. Love Again
3. Don't Start Now
4. Physical
5. Levitating
6. Cool
7. Pretty Please
8. Hallucinate
9. Boys Will Be Boys
10. Good in Bed
11. Future Nostalgia

This album is all moods. While listening I felt like I was on a cross-country trip to relive a memory I never had. It oscillates between warm and comfortable to cold and lonely, but it is in the end a wonderous journey. This is an album from which I doubt I'd ever listen to a single. It must be experienced as a whole to really get the most out of it. This was a difficult album to rank the tracks, and if I did it again in a week I'm sure everything but number 1 and number 11 would probably be different (like my initial ranking a week ago), but to me that just says how good it is throughout.

1 Heard Them Stirring

I re-listened to Heroin since so many people are rating it so highly and I suspect I underrated it a great deal given the merits of its lyrics and its timing and such, but I'm going to let my rating stand. I'll be that outlier. I won't listen to the full album again to re-rank it. The fact is the song gave me a headache, and the album gave me a worse one. It was literally painful to listen to, and the pain keeps going even after I've stopped listening, and I just don't get how anyone could like that.

I've listened to "artsy" music before. Cibo Matto - Viva! La Woman is a fantastic album that I could listen to any time. "Birthday Cake" also gets into that "instrument violation" range but then it has other songs top balance it out. "Know Your Chicken" is also weird and out there but it doesn't sound like they were trying to hurt their instruments.

The thing that bothered me about TVU+N is that it felt like there was no balance to it, they just kept going all the way every time. There really isn't anything likable in the album, it just comes off as pretentious bullshit. It feels like it exists only as an excuse for somebody to say "oh, you just don't understand art because you're not sophisticated enough." Not that anyone said that, but that's exactly what I felt even as I was listening to it, and having that Andy Warhol cover art sure doesn't help alleviate that sense. The truth is, as far as experimentation goes, they really seemed to have very few tricks up their sleeves and over-relied on the most basic and most grating of them.

Whast to say about The Velvet Underground & Nico? This album is essentially trolling in the pre-Internet era, but not in a way that I feel I can enjoy. I felt a bit of distaste for half the songs from the moment they started, while the other half tricked me into thinking I'd like the song then the band had to violate an instrument or two... every time. I honestly never want to listen to this album again, there isn't anything to enjoy here.

Here's my ranking, I guess, they could all just be last place really...

1. There She Goes Again
2. I'm Waiting for the Man
3. I'll Be Your Mirror
4. Venus in Furs
5. All Tomorrow's Parties
6. Femme Fatale
7. The Black Angel's Death Song
8. Sunday Morning
9. Run Run Run
10. Heroin
11. European Son

After this I'm tempted to nominate nothing but club music when my turn comes around.

The problem is we all want those things to be unanswered for now but evidence suggests this is the end. Those things can and probably will remain unanswered forever (if you don't read the books). Maybe we'll get some movies, but they'll probably have the taint of not really fleshing out or finishing anything.

IMO we didn't even get a complete story for why Drummer sides with.. actually, the only explanation for almost every political decision all season is either you are with Inaros to your dying breath or obviously you have to be against him no matter what anyone else has done for the last two centuries. They took one of the most politically complex and realistic stories ever told in a sci-fi show and turned it into "this guy is bad, so he gets beated at da end."

Stuck the landing? Bullshit. Everything happened way too fast in this last season (or two, or maybe even three). Almost everything was actually unexplained, and that's before we talk about Laconia. It makes the last two seasons of GoT look well-paced. They successfully finished off one plot thread out of the dozen that make the story, but it wasn't even the most interesting one they had going on.

Of the "Big 4" Seattle Grunge bands Soundgarden is my least favorite (though they have the coolest name of the bunch). Still, I was excited to listen to this album since I know a lot of it but never owned it. The truth is, though, the tone is pretty much all over the place on this album. "Half" in particular doesn't even feel like it belongs on the album, or from the 90s. It felt like an experimental throwback you'd expect from an album 20-30 years its senior. Considering the fact that they really filled the album, they could have done without it and a couple other songs. Still, the top third of the album is good and still holds up today.

Grunge definitely has more than 3; I'd put it at at least six all-time essentials.
Nirvana - both Nevermind and In Utero
Pearl Jam - Ten
Alice in Chains - Dirt
Soundgarden - Superunknown
Hole - Live Through This

I don't believe the last one is as big as the other five, especially at release, but I'd also argue it has grown more significant with time.
Live Through This is underrated imo. Courtney as a songwriter could do circles around Kurt. Regardless of how I feel about her as a person I have to give it to her that she is (was?) talented AF. This is one of the albums I'm considering for nomination when my turn comes around. I also agree you can't leave out Ten. Even if you've never heard the album you've probably heard half of it on the radio. Heck, my local rock station actually did play the whole thing at least once when I was a kid.

The release order is: DD1, JJ1, DD2, LC1, IF1, Defenders, Pun1, JJ2, LC2, IF2, DD3, Pun 2, JJ3.

IF1, as you likely know, is the worst of it, but other than DD3 the rest of the shows never fully deliver on the level of those first 3 seasons. You could also watch the two Punisher seasons without seeing anything past DD2 since he no longer crosses over with the rest story-wise after that.

Not a great score, but better than I thought I'd get with how rough my start was. I kept knowing the series for a lot of tracks but not the specific games so I only came out of round 1 with 1 point and round 2 with two total. I was also upset at round 3 as I kept knowing the series but not which specific character. The one that really killed me was Sami, as if its easy to tell any if those character themes apart - I heard an Orange Star theme and assumed Andy. The quotes ended up netting me 12 points, though, and the final round has to have the easiest 5 pointer possible.

R1: SOTN
R2: Chrono Cross
R3: Ramza, Gilgamesh
R4: Fludd, Otacon, Ganon, Alucard
R5: DKC, Eyes On Me

For me it's easily The Matrix. It'd be much more competitive if it was against T2, but when I rewatched T1 earlier this year it really didn't feel like it held up all that well. That's not even considering effects or anything, the script is paper thin and many scenes feel like filler so that the movie can reach a decent runtime. That's not to say it's a bad film, far from it, just that it really shows its age.

TBH you could really just watch DD1, JJ1, and DD2 and those three season gives you the majority of the goodness of the Netflix series (and happens to be release order iirc). There's still a lot of good stuff in there afterwards, don't get me wrong, but it's a lot of content with much more varied quality.

I think a large part of the problem with the Netflix shows (other than IF1) is that the announcement of Disney+ and the reorganization of Marvel Entertainment came at just the right time to derail a lot of stuff and before they were even half done the Netflix side of the partnership decided that they'd fulfill their contracts but they weren't going to push for much more than that. Not that it's a great mindset, but I just don't think they felt it was worth it to give their all once Disney announced their "divorce."
