I literally made this topic because my cat is scraping around on the ground hiding under furniture shaking like a leaf.

PSA: some humans also get their PTSD triggered by fireworks.

dont forget some people have to go to wake up early on the 1st and are trying to sleep

You know, I've never thought about it like that before. Fireworks making dogs miserable is fine because dogs suck, but if the noise stresses out other animals too then maybe anti-fireworks people have a point.

Never cared for 4th of July fireworks, but on New Years Im ok with it. I grew up in Hawaii where fireworks are illegal yet the entire island pops off when the clock strikes midnight. It is annoying when people pop them on days other than the ones mentioned but kids will be kids.

I have a dog and shes awesome. She does bark when shes at someone elses place and hears them, but when shes at home shes calm. Ive heard stories of dogs getting out cause of fireworks, but I also dont agree with people leaving their dogs outside, period. What a shitty dog life.

Indifferent towards fireworks at home, though I do have some fond childhood memories involving them.

I don't feel strongly about fireworks one way or another. I don't set any off, the sound doesn't bother me, and occasionally I'll walk outside to look at them.

Yup, vets deserved to have their PTSD triggered for all the innocent Iraqi civilians they killed.

I wouldn't hate fireworks so much if everyone would just decide on a time and let loose. People have been setting them off today since noon.

I mean, if you have to live life by tiptoeing around the idea that you might upset anyone that had a bad experience at any point, you can't actually do anything meaningful or exciting in life, if you really think about it (really think about it). Targetting fireworks, a pointless display of excess, is easy, and I don't really care about fireworks either. But I don't really support the notion of being against something like that either, because of the momentous force of banning it creates by using the logic for banning them; it gets out of hand very quickly.

While I was driving home tonight someone shot off a firework and it went off right above my car. Many people who use personal fireworks are just assholes. BTW, this same asshole in my neighborhood stockpiles the things and sets them off at seemingly random times all year long. Not just holidays, not even just weekends. He'll fire the things off on weekdays with no regard to people who have to get up the next morning. I hope he burns his own house down.

I'm told that's what happened to a certain young gentleman who had behaved inappropriately towards my oldest niece. No sympathy for him or his family.

They're cool

I have 5 cats and a dog and none of them give a shit about fireworks. I also work with 5 different rescues though, so I know that is not the norm and they cause crazy amounts of stress to a lot of animals. They also lead to a lot of animals going missing.

Really the reason that fireworks are obnoxious though is because they don't have to be made with the loud explosions. They can be made to go off a lot quieter / almost silently. So the triggering part to pets and veterans could be eliminated but isn't because people like loud noises.

I endorse this message. My dog is terrified by them and they kept waking up my 9 month old

I agree with this view when it comes to things that you'd do in, like, private, or 1-on-1 contexts. i.e. things with a limited scope, like "don't say this word because it could offend someone in the room with you" "don't bring donuts to your workplace in case someone has an eating disorder" etc

in fact both of those examples (there's any number i could think of) can both have the person say "hey please don't do this actually, it's no big deal that you didn't know, but i'd prefer you don't" because you are in direct contact with the people affected

But when the scope of the action is "any pets living in a nearby radius could feel terrified", and you have no way of knowing who is or isn't okay with it or for them to ask you not to, then I think that crosses a line that those other scenarios don't

That rarely stops it. Iowa only recently unbanned them but I've grown up hearing fireworks in the neighborhood for the weeks around the 4th of July.

When I was a teenager my dog ran away on New Years precisely because of some dickhead doing fireworks, and we found her a day later dead on the side of the highway, about a mile from home.

In summary: fuck fireworks in residential neighborhoods.

Why are fireworks getting blamed for dogs running away? Unless the fireworks are destroying walls/fences, it sounds more like the dogs could just escape whenever something scares them. That's not very responsible pet ownership.

Yes its everyones responsibility to take care of your pet. Its not like you had a whole year to plan this or anything.

I mean, setting aside pets and PTSD people and people and all that, it's still at best pretty annoying, especially if you're trying to sleep. I don't know if I'd go so far as to call everybody bad people over it, but it seems kinda selfish. I think once a year on 7/4 is a reasonable compromise maybe, but most places I've lived just kinda do it randomly all summer, whether it's legal or not. My mom almost had to move once because she couldn't get enough sleep with everybody setting them off all the time.

My neighbors set off some fireworks at midnight last night that sounded like they were going to break my window. As in, I thought it went off right outside where I was sitting on the second floor. Was ear-damagingly loud and scared my cats. They did it twice, and by the time I got downstairs to ask them what was happening, they had quickly ducked back inside.

I have no history with the neighbors. They weren't just being asses.
