Battletech (2018)

This game took me a long time to finish, especially since each mission you play can take a significant chunk of time. Often I just felt like it'd take too long to get anything done so I'd leave it to the side for days. When I was playing it, though, it was amazingly good. The mechanics are very solid (though they should be since they're based off a tabletop game that's been around since the 80s) and really what kept me coming back. For as long as some of the missions could be, they were quite short is comparison to actually playing Battletech since the computer takes care of so much for you. Great strategy game, well worth the time.

Super Mario RPG

So I had played a good chunk of this game when I was younger. I stayed at a friend's house and I don't think I slept that night because I got through the fifth star. Then I never went back to play it again, nor did I touch it again until. I felt like even without beating it I had the full experience, little did I know that the first five stars are maybe half the game. Those last two stars felt like they took forever to get compared to the early ones, but now the task is complete.

Yeah, for some reason on my first read I thought it'd come in untapped as your third land, not just first or second. It looks less good now, but I still think it's got potential. Faceless Haven is probably better right now, but this does interact with Torbran for the time being and who knows what else in the future.

Looks like a very easy include for RDW, but how many people are really going to be into this art style? 99% of D&D players probably don't have nostalgia for those old modules, and there's no way that doesn't look awful in an actual deck.

Wow, ok. So I bought a Japanese set booster box of Strixhaven to split with a friend and with COVID restrictions finally being lifted we got together to open the packs. 15 packs each.

I got a Japanese Mystical Archive Time Warp and Counterspell and also opened up a Kozilek, Butcher of Truth from the List. Those three cards more than paid for my half of the box and that's not even including the other Mystical Archives or rares/mythics. Amazing.
Those are good pulls for you, what'd your friend get?

Willow (NES)

This is a game that not only had I never played before, back in the day I didn't know anyone who owned it. I actually quite like(d) the arcade game, which is quite different, so if any rental place carried it I'm sure I would have at least rented it. This action RPG really flew under the radar for me and many others, I'm sure. That said, it's an okay-ish game. The map is actually too big, especially in towns, with a lot of empty area to traverse to get around. The combat can also get annoying with some enemies (the magical ones) only being harmable by using a sword that the rest of the enemies just plain ignore (and vice versa). The bosses also take very little to figure out the optimal strategy to defeat them. It is, however, pretty responsive and feels really good to control and the challenge level is quite reasonable. Not an all time classic by any means, but a nice diversion if you want a second rate Zelda clone.

Some interesting implications there. I don't know if a 3 mana sorcery is really even playable in Legacy or Vintage, but there are decks that could be totally wiped out by the time you hit mana value of 20+. Like, even if you didn't get 100% of their cards you could get enough key pieces to render a win impossible for the opponent.

This game was definitely NES hard for a lot of it, and then the final boss was the easiest boss in the entire game. I would be disappointed, but I'm just glad it's done. A decent but perhaps overrated game I doubt I'll ever play again.

I have to admit I'm a bit concerned knowing that the evoke creature from above is part of a cycle, and it's known from Maro's hints that there's at least one other free spell that's not part of the evoke cycle.

Free spells and Wizards messing up, name a more iconic duo
They will never stop trying to make free spells. They're always going to chase the dream of free spells that are playable, beloved by the players, and not broken. As for other, non-evoke, free spells in the set we've already seen Force of Negation. I don't think these cards are too likely to break the game given the fact that they aren't truly free - you're losing card advantage in the process. That's a lot more fair than something like Once Upon a Time where the card literally says you can pay it for no cost.

So I really like the Timeless Dragon, but I feel like it will totally be lost in the shuffle. Am I wrong or does it feel very Standard power level more than Modern power level?

Trampling over planeswalkers on Thrasta is cute.

I like that the frame on the "unfinished" alt art Dakkon looks like a child colored it in, including going outside the lines on the set symbol. I guess the Urza's enchantment/land does so too, but you can barely see any frame on it to get what the art style was meant to be.

I don't think they ban pact, except playing it on arena is such a janky interface. You don't want a card in a tier 1 deck to be so miserable to play with and against.
I know I'm only talking from one side of the equation here but I don't find the deck miserable to play with at all. I actually find it fun, and the interface doesn't bottleneck playing the deck in the same way that something like Cat-Oven did. The play progression mentioned earlier is the optimal way of doing it "in case," but like Mana I also haven't timed out at all.

When I think of a deck that was miserable to play with and against I think of the U/G Oko decks. I hated it even while I was playing it and it crushed everything else so hard nothing else was worth playing. Tainted Pact isn't that, not even close.

From my playing of Tainted Pact so far, once you have the combo set up it doesn't take that much time to play out. In fact, I'd say it's one of the faster decks that win off of Thassa's Oracle.

I suspect neither Oracle or Pact will get banned. Pact might, but certainly not Oracle. Stifle is in Historic Anthology 5 and that's an incredibly solid answer to this or any Oracle combo. Also there are already decks that disassemble Pact pretty easily without changing their lists at all from what they ran pre-Pact.

I really think that banning Pact is premature right now. If they do I'll get my wildcards and move on, but I feel like a lot of the hate is coming from people who just don't want to see the meta change significantly. They built their decks and have tweaked and tuned them for the last ~6 months and so that's how historic should always be, right? It sucks when your deck goes from tier 1 to tier 3, and maybe when it does you don't notice the tier 2 decks going up to tier 1 because of the new boogieman, but that doesn't mean bannings are necessary.

I wasn't trying to dunk on WotC here. Like I said, I'd be psyched if I had gotten that as compensation. If this happened in a paper tournament (not that they got the format wrong but what is basically a 3 hour delay) I find it unlikely they'd give anybody anything on the same level. They aren't really obligated to compensate people in either situation, so it's cool when they do.

No, Izzet Tempo does not do well against mono red. Most of the things it wants to do are too slow against a good RDW hand, and I think it might even be worse against mono white since the white deck has such resilient threats. 3/4 and 4/4 dragons aren't that great if the opponent has a bigger first striking flier with alseid/savior backup.

I was going to say everybody should get some kind of compensation for the hours lost, but I figured from their perspective WotC wasn't obliged to give anybody anything. Of course they choose something that costs them nothing, but if I got auto-entry for the next three qualifiers I'd be psyched.

It's surprising how good that Izzet Tempo deck does in tournaments considering how poor of a choice it is on ladder. I guess it mostly comes down to aggro being much more popular on the ladder.

Gratz on the free entries, with a few extra shots at it in the future I hope you find yourself on a good run next time.

I suspect the universes beyond stuff will be fine, since it's not super limited like secret lairs walking dead. I doubt I'll buy any though. Time Spiral Remastered, so far, is not exciting to me. It might be fun to draft, but who is physically getting together to draft right now? If this set was going to standard it would be interesting for the timeshifted cards, but then the rest of the cards would be woefully underpowered thanks to the last few years of the game's development. As is, it's really just dumping cards into modern to keep the price of some staples in check.

Hunt For The Wilderpeople

The start with I was just like "is that the kid from Deadpool 2?" Which yes, it is. The scene where he's introduced had me amused. The social worker is listing off all of these "terrible" things this kid has done while he walks around this tiny farm and ultimately just puts himself back in the cop car. Obviously this is exactly the place this kid needs to be, and sadly as soon as he realizes it a speed bump has to derail his happy new life. If it weren't for it being slightly by the numbers, I would have given this movie a higher score. As it is it's funny, heart-warming, a little bit sad but always charming to its core. And just when I think it had reached its apex and it couldn't deliver any more we meet Psycho Sam. This little movie never stops giving and it is every bit as good as people told me it was. Oh, and I really got a kick out of the little role played by Hamish.

Skux life. Majestical.

The main problem with your deck is that it lacks focus. While some of the cards like to work with Yorion many either don't care or really don't want to be targeted by him. You have multiple ways of bringing things back from the graveyard, but Ugin exiles cards. Things like that make it so that often these very powerful and cool cards are totally at odds with what the rest of your deck is doing. What I see at the core of your deck is a black and white life gain synergy deck, so you may want to check out this article: https://mtgazone.com/budget-orzhov-clerics-deck-guide/

I'll put up with ads, but I agree that they are highly detrimental to the experience. TV shows are made with baked-in spots for ad breaks, movies aren't. Watching In Bruges on Peacock was a bit jarring, though they had the good sense to put all of the ad breaks in the first half and leave the second half ad free.

In Bruges

When I learned of this movie several years back I just assumed it was a drama. Not until this topic series did I learn it would be a dark comedy, and even then I didn't realize there'd be so many laugh out loud moments. Even the little opening monologue delivered by Colin Ferrell made lol thanks to his expert delivery. Even as a straight male I have to say he's got the charisma to make even me drop my pants. He's not a man whore, he just has a gift he needed to share with as much of the world as he could. His odd couple sort of relationship between his Ray and Brendan Gleeson's Ken really made this movie. It's just fantastic the way the two play off of each other while still clearly having a genuine friendship. While it quickly became clear that the new job they were going to receive would be what it was, and that Ken wouldn't go through with it, there were still some nice surprises littered throughout. The date scene between Ray and Chloe where they were both toying with the truth was also a neat piece or writing. Overall it was a fantastic movie brought down only slightly by a sluggish pace where some scenes seem to be playing out in molasses.

8/10

Hunt for the Wilderpeople

I would rank-list all of them, but I want to see this movie an order of magnitude more than the others.

Also for the time being we can tally up Lost In Translation as watched for me, but that was 16 years ago so a rewatch is probably in order. Like Fargo, I own it on DVD. So possibly soonish?
