Less drama

Not much changed policy-wise since Trump hasn't really been able to pass any of his bigger promises

This, more or less. But to add
- There'd be some areas (specifically foreign policy) where I think she'd be getting a pass for doing much of the same stuff as Trump (not that he's been too harshly criticized for foreign policy)
- We'd still be in the Paris deal, which is good
- The executive branch wouldn't be populated by open crooks (too much) and folks like Gorka and Sessions
- I wonder if "the left" would be as active. God knows Hillary has her share of critics on the left, but Trump has spurred people into action (including many liberals) in a way that I'm not sure she could.

The City Council has voted to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day as an official Los Angeles holiday.

Councilmembers voted 14-1 to make the second Monday in October a day to commemorate indigenous, aboriginal and native people. It will be a paid holiday for city employees.

Councilman Mitch O'Farrell, a member of the Wyandotte Nation tribe, pushed for the switch. Some activists view Christopher Columbus as a symbol of genocide for native peoples.

Councilman Joe Buscaino was the lone "no" vote on Wednesday. He sided with Italian-Americans, who view Columbus Day as a celebration of their national heritage.

Los Angeles joins San Francisco and several other cities nationwide in honoring native Americans in lieu of Columbus.

A Cobb County police lieutenant has been moved to administrative duty for making what the department deemed were “inappropriate racial comments” during a traffic stop last year.

Channel 2 Action News reported that its request for body camera footage of the incident prompted an internal investigation of Lt. Greg Abbott.

The footage shows a white female driver pulled over during a DUI traffic stop telling Abbott that she was scared to move her hands in order to get her cellphone because “I’ve just seen way too many videos of cops ... ”

At that point, she is cut off by Abbott.

“But you’re not black. Remember, we only shoot black people,” the police veteran of nearly three decades can be heard saying. “Yeah. We only kill black people, right? All the videos you’ve seen, have you seen the black people get killed?”
The footage is from July 2016, before Mike Register took over as chief of Cobb police.

He said that Abbott will remain on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation, for which he didn’t give a timeline.

A statement Wednesday from the department said Register just found out about the recording Friday.

“No matter what context it was said, it shouldn’t have been said,” Register told Channel 2.

This was also before a study by the International Association of Chiefs of Police ordered the department to address public perceptions of racism and discriminatory policing.

Suri Chadha Jimenez, who is representing the driver in the case, said he thinks the officer was being sarcastic after the woman “gave him some lip.”

“It makes you cringe when you hear it. It’s unacceptable,” Jimenez said.
Lance LoRusso, Abbott’s attorney, gave the station this statement:

“Lt. Greg Abbott is a highly respected 28-year veteran of the Cobb County Police Department. He is cooperating with the department's internal investigation and will continue to do so. His comments must be observed in their totality to understand their context. He was attempting to de-escalate a situation involving an uncooperative passenger. In context, his comments were clearly aimed at attempting to gain compliance by using the passenger’s own statements and reasoning to avoid making an arrest.”

In the police statement, Cobb County commission chairman Mike Boyce is quoted as saying: “I have seen the video and obviously have great concerns. I find the comments on the video repugnant and offensive beyond measure.”

This comes a day after the department released information about an officer-involved shooting that injured a 16-year-old’s upper thigh. The shooting was deemed justifiable by a grand jury.

“We are going to keep going forward to make sure we, as a police department, service the community in a most professional way. All segments of the community,” Register said.

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/crime/bs-md-ci-eighth-officer-indicted-20170830-story.html
An eighth Baltimore police officer has been indicted on federal racketeering charges, with federal prosecutors alleging he “stole money from victims, some of whom had not committed crimes, swore out false affidavits and submitted false official incident reports.”

He did so while overseeing and covering for other officers committing similar crimes, the prosecutors alleged.

Sgt. Thomas Allers, 49, of Linthicum Heights, a member of the Baltimore Police Department since 1996, was arrested Wednesday on nine counts of robbery and extortion, after his Aug. 24 indictment was unsealed.

Allers oversaw the Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force, a special unit that investigated gun crimes, from 2013 until mid-2016. Seven other members of the unit were indicted in March on similar racketeering charges, accused of robbing people, filing false court paperwork and submitting fraudulent overtime claims.

Prosecutors allege that Allers — who did not have an attorney listed in online court records — stole more than $90,000 in a series of robberies, and that one resident he stole from was subsequently shot and killed “because he could not repay a drug-related debt.”

They also allege Allers covered for the other indicted officers by filing false incident reports, and “obstructed law enforcement by alerting other members of the [gun task force] about potential investigations of their criminal conduct.”

"I condemn any and all criminal activity that erodes our trust with the community," Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis said in a statement. "We are and have been embedded with the FBI /Baltimore field office’s Public Corruption Task Force. This partnership ensures that police officers that commit criminal misconduct will face the certainty of accountability."

Allers left the Gun Trace Task Force in June 2016 and was assigned to a Drug Enforcement Administration task force, the DEA confirmed. He left the task force around March, when the members of his former unit were indicted.

Two of the seven officers indicted in March have pleaded guilty to the charges against them. Others have pleaded not guilty. Two have scheduled rearraignments, where they could change their not-guilty pleas to guilty pleas. One has not entered a plea.

The March indictments led Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby’s office to drop 77 criminal cases that relied on the testimony of the officers, and more than 100 are currently under review.

Mosby’s office could not immediately be reached for comment about the indictment of the eighth officer, and whether it would lead to additional dropped cases against criminal defendants in the city.

In announcing the indictment, federal prosecutors in the office of acting Maryland U.S. Attorney Stephen M. Schenning outlined several specific incidents in which they allege Allers committed crimes.

In one incident, while serving a search warrant at a Baltimore home in early April 2015, prosecutors said Allers and other officers found $6,000 that was “a combination of money that the homeowners had made buying and selling used cars and a tax refund the wife had received.”

Prosecutors said Allers and the other officers stole $5,700, and “then filed a false incident report stating that only $233 had been seized.”

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/30/us/politics/eric-schmidt-google-new-america.html

In the hours after European antitrust regulators levied a record $2.7 billion fine against Google in late June, an influential Washington think tank learned what can happen when a tech giant that shapes public policy debates with its enormous wealth is criticized.

The New America Foundation has received more than $21 million from Google; its parent company’s executive chairman, Eric Schmidt; and his family’s foundation since the think tank’s founding in 1999. That money helped to establish New America as an elite voice in policy debates on the American left.

But not long after one of New America’s scholars posted a statement on the think tank’s website praising the European Union’s penalty against Google, Mr. Schmidt, who had chaired New America until 2016, communicated his displeasure with the statement to the group’s president, Anne-Marie Slaughter, according to the scholar.

The statement disappeared from New America’s website, only to be reposted without explanation a few hours later. But word of Mr. Schmidt’s displeasure rippled through New America, which employs more than 200 people, including dozens of researchers, writers and scholars, most of whom work in sleek Washington offices where the main conference room is called the “Eric Schmidt Ideas Lab.” The episode left some people concerned that Google intended to discontinue funding, while others worried whether the think tank could truly be independent if it had to worry about offending its donors.

Those worries seemed to be substantiated a couple of days later, when Ms. Slaughter summoned the scholar who wrote the critical statement, Barry Lynn, to her office. He ran a New America initiative called Open Markets that has led a growing chorus of liberal criticism of the market dominance of telecom and tech giants, including Google, which is now part of a larger corporate entity known as Alphabet, for which Mr. Schmidt serves as executive chairman.

Ms. Slaughter told Mr. Lynn that “the time has come for Open Markets and New America to part ways,” according to an email from Ms. Slaughter to Mr. Lynn. The email suggested that the entire Open Markets team — nearly 10 full-time employees and unpaid fellows — would be exiled from New America.

While she asserted in the email, which was reviewed by The New York Times, that the decision was “in no way based on the content of your work,” Ms. Slaughter accused Mr. Lynn of “imperiling the institution as a whole.”

Mr. Lynn, in an interview, charged that Ms. Slaughter caved to pressure from Mr. Schmidt and Google, and, in so doing, set the desires of a donor over the think tank’s intellectual integrity.

“Google is very aggressive in throwing its money around Washington and Brussels, and then pulling the strings,” Mr. Lynn said. “People are so afraid of Google now.”

...

In the run-up to that conference, Ms. Slaughter and New America’s lead fund-raiser in emails to Mr. Lynn indicated that Google was concerned that its positions were not going to be represented, and that it was not given advanced notice of the event.

“We are in the process of trying to expand our relationship with Google on some absolutely key points,” Ms. Slaughter wrote in an email to Mr. Lynn, urging him to “just THINK about how you are imperiling funding for others.”

As best I can make out of career mode from what I've seen so far

- There are 6 "series," which take you through the game
- The first series at least had like 10 events, most of which were championships and some were "showcase" invitationals. Looks like other series have more events
- You get "series points" at the end of each race, and a certain number of series points will unlock the next series. Not sure how this will work; can you progress by just coming in 10th a bunch of times? Or do you have to win shit? Kinda reminds me of FH1's progression.
- The non-showcase races seem to be customizable, a la FH3's campaign. Unsure about weather, but they said you can have a 45 minute race in campaign if you wanted. Or just a 1 lap race.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2017/08/29/mattis-orders-pentagon-allow-transgender-troops-continue-serving-pending-study/614711001/
Defense Secretary Jim Mattis late Tuesday announced that transgender troops will be allowed to continue serving in the military pending the results of a study by experts.

The announcement follows an order from President Trump — first announced in a tweet — declaring that transgender service members can no longer serve in the military, effectively reversing an Obama administration policy. The order also affects the Department of Homeland Security, which houses the Coast Guard.

"Once the panel reports its recommendations and following my consultation with the secretary of Homeland Security, I will provide my advice to the president concerning implementation of his policy direction," Mattis said in the statement. "In the interim, current policy with respect to currently serving members will remain in place."

Mattis' move buys time for the Pentagon to determine how and if it will allow thousands of transgender troops to continue to serve, whether they will receive medical treatment, or how they will be discharged.

As Defense Secretary, Mattis has emphasized that he has little tolerance for policies that detract from military readiness or the Pentagon's effectiveness on the battlefield. At the last moment in June, he delayed the Pentagon's plan to accept new transgender troops. His reasoning: He demanded more study to determine the effect of recruiting them on the Pentagon's ability to fight and win wars.

Under the Obama administration, the Pentagon rescinded a longstanding ban on transgender troops from serving. It also outlined how those troops could receive medical treatment, including gender reassignment surgery, if it was deemed medically necessary.

https://thinkprogress.org/fed-study-debunks-conservative-myth-that-affordable-housing-policies-caused-subprime-crisis-c4081d48b88f/
The study analyzed loan- and neighborhood-level data in California and Florida. It found no statistical relationship between the two federal housing policies — which have been the central focus of conservative attacks in recent years — and the price or availability of subprime loans, even after controlling for the loan size, loan type, borrower characteristics, and other factors.

These findings shouldn’t come as a surprise. Indeed, CAP’s housing team has been making this point for years.

Here’s what really happened. During the housing bubble of the mid-2000s, over-leveraged shadow banks packaged risky subprime mortgage loans into securities and passed them along to consumers that were often unaware or misinformed of the underlying risks. It was the poor performance of these private-label securities — not those issued by Fannie and Freddie — that led to the financial meltdown, according to the bipartisan Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission.

http://www.ncrc.org/media-center/press-releases/item/240-cra-myth-and-fact
. In fact, only about 25 percent of sub-prime loans were made by institutions covered by CRA.¹

CRA was passed in 1977. The explosive growth in subprime lending occurred more than two decades later, nearly doubling from 2001-2006 alone. No major changes to CRA were enacted during this time.
