I don't think you can use the "it's in the name" argument though. It's called the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, but that doesn't mean there's anything truly Democratic about them.

There are people who are just openly racist/sexist who hate "wokeness" for obvious reasons. But many of the people who DeSantis is trying to appeal to don't believe that "wokeness" is really enlightened/understanding/compassionate etc. They believe (largely due to the media they consume) that "woke" people are making up victims or trying to force adoption of language to protect a tiny fraction of society. They're picturing the most annoying person they can conjure in their mind telling them that they can't like a movie from their childhood because it doesn't have any black actors in it.

Sure when politicians like DeSantis bring up "wokeness", they mean "ever presenting America in a bad light" or "using someone's name". But I think people on the left can understand why someone pushing for understanding and compassion for a group of people doesn't inherently make someone moral or right. Because of course we see them all the time, sticking up for every ****head conservative who gets even minor pushback for something they say. And it doesn't even have to be malicious on the part of the person suggesting we be more compassionate.

I feel like it was less conservative before 2016. 2016 taught every troll that being a Trump supporter could get them the attention they desired.

I saw some people say that "woke" is being used to use "black", though I think it's more accurate to say that it's used against people who support black rights. Still equally bad but I think there's a minor difference.

I have a PhD in math.

Just a handful of applications that are closer to research I've done:

1. Cryptography.
2. There are lots of graph theoretic problems that lend themselves to stability properties of networks and things like that.
3. Topology and homotopy theory has been applied to data science. There are other techniques that are all about reducing data with lots of properties down to a select few for both ease of storage and to capture hidden qualities of data sets (see PCA analysis for an example of this).

I don't think it is, it just seemed like a lot of the criticism at the time really boiled down to "It fails to recapture the nostalgia I had for DBZ" so I was just curious why Super works instead.

I don't think it's inherently weird, but often times the details around how such friendships formed have weird/creepy elements to them.

Like I'm 31 and I have friends who are maybe 23, but we met at work in a development program that hires PhD people and people with bachelor's degrees. It would have been a different matter if I'm a "church elder" watching someone grow up and becoming friends with them once they're an adult, etc. etc.

I don't think this moves the needle for a lot of people tbh. It's still good for him to be doing it, but most of the public seems to be easily convinced that drone strikes are "necessary" for "reasons". Since that public rarely suffers any direct consequences from it, it's easy for them to just ignore it.

It only makes sense.

The problem with that for Rogan is that he at least considers other views, and even has other views altogether. Someone who was alt right wouldn't do that... and if they did they wouldn't be entirely alt right because they have different opinions from the ideology.

For the record, I don't actually think Joe Rogan is "alt-right" though I do think he platforms and gives "equal weight" to people who are, which is just as bad for the purposes of spreading their message since he gives very little pushback to these people when he has them on as guests. But I think this paragraph is essentially claiming "no true alt right-y". Just like you don't stop being conservative because you are "conservative but you support gay marriage", if you're generally pushing reactionary viewpoints that are anti-trans, anti-vaccine, pushing toxic masculinity and the (white) male identity, you're alt right.

Also as far as "being open" to other viewpoints, being open to medical experts and being open to vaccine conspiracy theorists tends to mean that you're more in the latter camp than the former.

I think including hand holding/hugging/cuddling makes it inconvenient in ways that aren't just "people see my intimacy".

If they didn't secede over Biden "stealing the election", I don't see why Trump going to jail would trigger it.

I defended a couple of weeks ago. This whole process was a little rushed (requiring many late nights and more red bull than I had consumed in my whole life time), so the defense happened knowing I would need to make a fair amount of revisions.

Luckily the feedback from the committee was primarily about stuff I had already planned to do. I was just losing too much brain function due to sleep deprivation (primarily caused by stress and panic rather than any need to stay up all night, to be honest). I can say I have never been more sick of something in my life. I'm sure I'll turn around on it, but right now I want nothing more than to never look at this document or this topic ever again lol.

I'm trying to think what my timeline was...I must have turned in my dissertation after I defended for practical reasons, but I think that I was done writing it before my defense...

Well for practical reasons, if you're turned off by someone because of their looks or something, it makes having sex with them harder even if that's your only real goal.

I think it's not particularly interestingly written, i.e. if a D list comedian delivered the joke, it wouldn't feel like they were punching above their weight too much. Sure, Bill Burr probably has better delivery than that hypothetical D list comedian, but it just feels lazy.

I think despite the fact that every election cycle we get a wave of "Oprah / The Rock / *insert other celebrity* would crush the election", there's a reason that they never pursue it. I know that celebrities and influencers aren't perfect analogues, but the halls of Wikipedia are filled with failed candidacies and runs for political office by celebrities.

I recently watched a ton of his skits for some reason.

Then he started doing more after a hiatus of not really having that many so it was good timing for me.

I don't think I deserve to die simply for being surrounded by narrowminded people. Relocating isn't as easy as packing a suitcase and hopping the next train for a blue state.

I do sympathize with that, but this is one of the ways that conservatives hold the nation hostage.

Short of actually paying for people to relocate out of certain states, the "price to move" will always be too high for some people.

and/or
2) Raising money for causes and then spending it on themselves

I don't think Hasan really fits either of those categories. Any amount of "You're socialist so why don't you donate" fundamentally misunderstands socialism. He's also talked in the past about how his approach to donations is generally that he just doesn't talk about them because when he does donate, people just claim he's flaunting his money and when he doesn't donate, people just complain that he doesn't donate. And there's a never ending stream of causes to donate for with each person thinking their cause is the most deserving of money.

That's not to say that I don't think that there are a few things he does with his money that are *bad looks*, but at the end of the day people are choosing to throw money at him by subscribing, and he's not playing the role of "owner" in that transaction.

I don't think that it's inherently a good idea, but sometimes in a primary you have two people who are roughly equally popular in party but one is far less popular out of party.

I think the issue in 2016 was partially that Republican voters during the primaries were also saying they wanted to vote for Trump. People just sort of assumed that was a lie and that people would get fed up with his behavior and not vote/vote third party/switch, which is a lot different than people already not being inclined to vote for someone.

Basically anything that isn't specific to you feels overdone even if it's the first time I've heard it.

Idk I feel like hooking up with your friend is the type of thing that can potentially try even "strong" friendships.

I feel like a lot of the people who get defensive about this validate it being a red flag.

I think more and more people are abandoning things like Facebook, but I think five years ago the type of people who were really loud about not having social media were the kind of people you didn't want to date.

It's sort of like how generally diversity of thought is a good thing, but the people who are loudest about diversity of thought tend to be people who think that anti-vaxxers/racists/etc. are being censored.

This is why the Dem strategy of "trying to get the crazy to win the primary" just doesn't work unless you're in a state with a much larger group of undecided voters.

I guess I think that there are things that differentiate a great stand up comedian from me just reading jokes out of a joke book. Delivery is obviously part of that, but there are good/successful comedians who don't have particularly amazing delivery and instead are successful because of the jokes that they write. A stand up comedian really does want engagement with the audience on a level that's more just "I strung some words together with a funny voice and made a pun".

Even looking at Dave Chapelle, the original Chapelle Show had many sketches that in one way or another satirized or held a mirror up to race relations in America. And part of the reason that's often given for him quitting the show was because...a lot of people didn't get that and were laughing along with the racism instead of at it. So Dave Chapelle understands himself that "just jokes" can have negative impacts, but chooses to ignore that when it's trans people who are being marginalized instead.

the right is powerful because they seemingly take in any ally they can get regardless if there are individual issues that separate voters within the parties.
as far as i've noticed, there aren't any witch hunts to destroy reputations or lives when conflicting issues are brought up.

People have been voted out, censured by state parties, etc. for not saying that the election was stolen and there was widespread voter fraud.

Harry Potter was a global sensation. I don't assume that anyone who has some emotional attachment to it supports J.K. Rowling and her beliefs. But it's then weird to be like "Yes we are really invested in continuing to play but also want to look like we're doing something".
