Why should the government determine how much you work?

Considering the capitalist system is enforced by them, they do already. Employers can exert power over you only because the government backs the currency which they hold enough of to pay employees.

That maybe your only goal.

But I'm looking out for both sides of the equation.

What can we do for the employer to maximize productive results / work outputted.

While looking at the employee and seeing what we can do to minimize difficulties / strain / health risks on their lives.

Again, maximum before health problems =/= maximum productivity. If the healthy maximum was 80 hours per week, should we all be doing that instead? All you're looking for is the employer and saying the government must bend over for them except in cases of demonstrated health issues. I'd like to believe society serves the people, not just employers.

It can't be generalized like this. It depends on the work and depends on other factors such as commute, family size, activities outside of work, etc. Also, maximum before health decline doesn't mean maximum for productivity. Productivity can decline beforehand. Regardless, we should be trying to make our lives better, not squeezing every person for every ounce of productivity they supposedly have.
The Employer will want to maximize out as much productivity as possible.

Legislators that actually care about you, the worker, will find some academically proven reason to limit the work hours.

Ergo 39 is what they can get away with, then so be it.

As long as that 39 is "Flexible" in terms of when you need to be there to get the job done, so be it.

All of that is irrelevant when the point is to improve people's lives.

39 hrs / week seems to be that magic number for maximum productivity without putting risk into a person's health.

It can't be generalized like this. And in a hundred years when the work week has been reduced to 5 minutes a week with quadruple pay, you could still make this argument.

What you people want is a universal basic income. Thats a whole different issue, and has jack shit to do with a 40 hour work week.

Uh, no. I'm saying shaving one day off and making it a 32 hour work week would not kill us. In fact, we'd be much better off. Using stupid hyperbole and bringing up 5 minute work weeks makes no sense. UBI is a separate issue.

Imagine trying to clean a room. There's a giant pile of shit in the middle of the room (the 40 hour work week) that would make the most difference if you worked at cleaning that. Instead people tell you to be more efficient with the rest of the room (neatly organize around this giant pile of shit to maximize less space). Do people "waste time"? Perhaps. Doesn't mean we're not spending more time at work than is necessary.

We're working the same hours as factory workers from a century ago. This is after a century of the fastest progress in human history. They were able to reduce hours and double pay back then, why not now? How can you not see something wrong with this picture?

the fact its easier to get from a millionaire to a billionaire than it is to get from ~50k a year to a millionaire.

There is no evidence for this statement whatsoever.

There are loads of millionaires out there. Loads. There are literally only about 2,750 billionaires in the world. On the other hand, there are over 15 million millionaires just in the US alone.

https://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/articles/2017-11-17/number-of-millionaires-in-america-hits-new-high

So yeah, this is completely incorrect actually. One in every 20 Americans is a millionaire.

The pool of millionaires is a lot smaller than the pool of sub-millionaires. Also, hitting 1 million is not a huge feat given the number of baby boomers with retirement accounts. In high cost of living areas, it means even less.

It's stupid (see what I did there?) how vilified the word has become even though there are plenty of alternatives that mean the exact same thing that these same people will not bat an eyelash at when used. It also happens to be the most fun to say, so that's the saddest part.

Are we just going to keep banning words whenever people decide to get triggered by them? There are a couple words that trigger me hard when I hear them, but I don't demand people stop using them. I bear it because I'm not a weak crybaby. Gee, I wonder if the words "weak" or "crybaby" will make the banned words list in the future. I'm sure "stupid" will at some point.

"The culture" meaning all of Islam? Islam is not a monoculture. Women could drive in other predominantly Muslim countries long ago. The US just happens to ally with the most oppressive of regimes and allowing women to drive in Shitty Arabia is just a PR stunt for them to make their shitty "kingdom" look more appealing since their oil money is running out.

By the way, the hijab is not religiously mandated. Stop getting your knowledge of Islam from terrorists who love using religion to oppress women.

The fact that the auto industry has actually been moving towards more SUVs and trucks pisses me off every time I think about it. Not just because of climate change, but because these behemoths are never as cool as cars.

It's an incredibly stupid move. I know they make more money for each one sold versus smaller vehicles, but the combination of increased gas prices and longer term auto loans (plus the allowance of such loans to people who can barely afford them) will blow up in their faces. Seems like it's primed to explode at any moment.

Since when do econ 101 graphs define what counts as a job?

Since always. You can't make a living if you aren't getting paid enough for the work. Most people aren't making a living off youtube or "entertainment" in general and it's not necessarily that they're worse at it. It's really a matter of luck, just like any popularity contest. Even those lucky enough to make a living from it could possibly only make a temporary living off of it just because an algorithm change could make it non-viable. That's why it's hard to call it a real job and to aspire to make it a career is foolish.

They're not getting paid for providing entertainment anyway. They mostly get paid for bringing "eyeballs".
