WTF does so many people have against pears? I mean, they're not particularly interesting, but they taste good enough and are easy to eat unlike say, oranges which are just as boring except nasty citrus, or cherries which are just as boring but have bad texture. Even apples are slightly worse than pears imo although the two are very similar.

I think a lot of it has to do with inconsistency. There are pears with a bad sandy texture and an almost bitter taste, but a good pear is great. Same with cherries by the way, there are cherries that are mushy and not particularly sweet, but there are others that are amazing.

I love all these fruits, including grapefruit, but it's clearly the least best fruit on there.

Ah, that makes sense. I usually cook my rice on a portable induction cooktop and I have to set it on "keep warm" since all the other settings are too powerful.

rice never burns or sticks to the sides/bottom like when using a pot. i make rice daily and cleaning rice stuck to the bottom can get pretty annoying.
with the rice cooker, i just measure the water and rice for the portion i want, press a button, and wait. it can keep rice warm throughout the day (aka perfect for me) and cleaning it is super easy cus like 3-5 grains stick to it and that's it.

it can also do slow cooking and steaming which is cool, cus a lot of times i wanna heat up chili i made then froze, or steam some broccoli and not have to worry about using the stove/pans/the full sized slow cooker.

it's pretty great cus i can basically pick my food for that day, whether its rice or chili, or whatever. put it in the rice cooker, and then i have hot food waiting for me whenever i get hungry.
i originally bought it when i had an office job, and would just fill it at home and bring it with me to work, but now i just use it at home as a "do everything in small portions" type of thing.

I don't know what you're doing, but I never have rice stick to my regular stainless steel pot. Maybe you're not using enough water in the regular pot. A regular pot likely takes more water since more of the water gets boiled away.

I'm pointing out that defining value as "it is what it got paid for" is a meaningless tautology and that it's also flawed to claim an item that sells for less is because of "lacking sufficient market information" but somehow an item that sells for more isn't. I'm also pointing out that someone paying a certain amount for an item is just as subjective as someone else saying that item isn't worth that much.

Very unlikely. TCGs, like most other collectibles, have established markets. It's like how when you almost anything, it's not just some number you pulled out of a hat, but something determined by the product's worth relative to the economy it exists in. Like, c'mon, you understand basic capitalism. It's fine if you don't like cards, but you're not making sense just assuming a non-existent scenario in order to shit on cards.

Yes I do understand capitalism, which is why I understand things like marketing which are used to make items look more valuable than they really are.

Usually, an item is worth the highest price someone will pay for it. If somebody sells/buys it for $1, that doesn't mean it was only worth a dollar. It just means that the right buyer wasn't in the room at the time.

This is why auctions are held, because it gets all the right people in the right room in order to sell an item for what it's actually worth.

Ripping off somebody's grandma clearing out her attic by vastly underpaying for a valuable item doesn't mean the item is worth less, it just means the seller was uninformed as to its true value.

Your last sentence contradicts the idea that "it's worth what it has been sold for."

The adjective "worth" mean having monetary or material value.

I know you probably wouldn't pay $3.25 million for a bunch of "pieces of paper," but if those pieces of paper were used in 1938 to create Action Comics #1, there are collectors out there who will spend $3.25 million to own them.

In other words, just because you think paper or cardboard is worthless, does not mean they are worthless.

As someone who's dabbled heavily in sports cards as an "investment", there's definitely a difference between artificial scarcity and actual scarcity.

Example: Modern cards that are "Limited" to 5, 10 , 100, 500 etc. copies, where the only difference is the color of the card. They make them every year, so how rare can they really be?

As opposed to something like a 1952 Mickey Mantle "Rookie" card. With many being destroyed due to them not selling, and then getting into poorer and poorer condition as time passes, that created actual scarcity as there is rumored to only be 1500 copies left in existence.

This is cardboard we're talking about.

I hate how everything gets turned into an "investment". Rampant speculation underlies a lot of problems we're experiencing, including cost of housing. We have an abundance, but the system depends on artificial scarcity.

Immigration is a band-aid. The underlying issues are still present, which is why people already there are having fewer children, and the descendants of immigrants will likely follow the same pattern, so you're just throwing more people at the problem and hoping for the best. Look at Canada's current policy which is bringing in so many immigrants while jobs pay poorly and houses are ridiculously expensive. It's basically a pyramid scheme.

They're getting paid more than the people putting in work on the actual mods themselves. Do they pay royalties to the mod authors?

We have 2-3 more special elections coming within the next couple months for House Republicans who've resigned. They're all in deep red districts, so it's going to be an uphill battle to flip those seats, but seeing how Democrats managed to flip a state house seat in a deep red Alabama district. Technology that reduces crashes and makes cars safer isn't increasing insurance rates. It's the greedy insurance companies increasing insurance rates. What we really need is a government option to reduce rates. Of course the best solution would be to reduce reliance on cars, but if we can't do that then we have to recognize how essential they are to living in the US and have the government provide insurance itself, especially since having insurance is mandated to drive a car.

It pisses me off, but what can I do other than reducing the waste I produce? The criminals doing the bulk of the pollution aren't just getting away with it, they're being richly rewarded! As someone who loves seafood, I'm also pissed off at mercury poisoning.

Make that limits on speculation in general and you'll actually solve the problem in a large way. Japan had a problem with property prices in the 80s when speculation was rampant, but the problem went away when the bubble burst. The key was that the bubble stayed burst. In the US we had the bubble leading up to 2008 and then the geniuses in charge instituted too-big-to-fail policies that allowed the bubble to continue (after a brief dip in prices which let more speculators buy up properties on the cheap).
