Realistically, if you can expect $30k in repairs in your first year, you should be able to reduce the asking price by quite a bit. I could believe that people put $30k into new houses in the first year, on average, but that's going to include elective improvements to bring the house in line with what they want, not just necessary repairs.

Also true. I can all but guarantee that half of the people clamouring for J&J to be available wouldn't actually go get the shot if it were. For the record, the only effective counterargument I can think of to give to people wary of the vaccine because of this history would be something like "But they're giving it to white people, too. In fact, they're giving it to white people so much that poor countries that are majority black/brown are being deprived of the vaccine. If this were part of some medical experiment, then they would be focusing the vaccines on the minority they'd want to target."

Pretty much. The government only performs dangerous, unethical experiments on minorities, not on groups that are large enough and rich enough to fight back. If they're giving it to white and/or rich people, that's the best indication you could ask for that it's probably safe and that the very understandable hesitation minority communities are feeling is unwarranted in this instance. That does nothing to address concerns that minority communities aren't getting the same drug as everyone else, which is not unheard of, but it's a step in the right direction.

There's going to be some effort to ensure that he isn't so financially disadvantaged as to automatically become the kids' least favourite parent (though acting like a petulant toddler over the divorce isn't helping his case there), and to that end, I can see the courts awarding him enough money to at least afford a decent house. $200k/month is a pretty ridiculous figure, though, regardless of how you slice it.

Saying "it's illegal/unconstitutional" just sidesteps the question. Often when people find it too hard to actually defend their stance based on values and outcomes.

Indeed. Legalistic morality is one of the most intellectually lazy positions you can possibly take. It's blatantly saying "I don't want to think about it so I'll just defer to what the government says," which is honestly pretty hilarious given how the "it's unconstitutional!" crowd loves criticizing people for blindly following the government.

Honestly, everybody should want the Janssen. It's the logical choice.

It's the least effective one by a substantial margin and has roughly the same side effect profile as AZ. From the patient's perspective, the only benefit is needing one dose instead of two (which is a pretty minimal benefit to begin with), but if they're going to be getting a booster shot anyway, that benefit is completely negated.

Janssen's great for getting the vaccine to places that don't have the infrastructure in place to distribute and handle the others, since it's vastly better than nothing, but once that infrastructure is in place, it's quite clearly the worst available option. I'm not sure why you're so bent on championing it in regions where better options are readily available.

In some ways, I'd actually say that feeling like you haven't accomplished anything special when everyone around you disagrees is evidence that you're truly talented. You don't think it's special because it's something you've been able to do relatively easily as part of your everyday life. From the perspective of an outside observer that lacks the talents, experience, or simple hard work that you've put into achieving those things, however, it's not something they could ever imagine themselves accomplishing.

Basically, if you're actually good at doing something, you should have to actively remind yourself how special that is, since your talent will make it feel less remarkable than it is.

Good in theory (I really wish they weren't necessary, but alas, people suck), lots of issues in practice. It's very difficult to strike a balance between being robust enough to prevent rampant forgeries and being simplistic enough that small businesses can implement the necessary infrastructure without too much cost (though a personalized QR code paired with a photo ID is pretty hard to fake, and just needs a smartphone to screen), and no matter what system is implemented, underpaid front-line workers are going to be taking the vast majority of the abuse (including genuine physical danger, in many cases) from people that don't like it. Pair it with, say, automatically executing anyone that gives store staff a hard time over it would be a nice improvement, but that's perhaps a bit more extreme a countermeasure than most would be willing to consider.

In Ontario, gas prices were variable enough that I could actually save a dollar or two by waiting a couple days (or waiting until later in the day, in many cases), so I got into the habit of starting to look for good prices whenever I was below half a tank. If one showed up that wasn't out of my way, I'd gas up there. If I dipped below 1/8 tank, though, I'd just gas up at the cheapest currently available option (I'd pass 5-6 different stations on many regular trips, so I'd check the prices on the way out and gas up on the way home). I'd rarely save that much (5 cents/litre is a pretty big difference, and that's just $3 for a 60L fillup), but it took virtually no additional time or effort, so I'd say it was worthwhile.

Back in NS, gas prices only change once a week, generally speaking, and every station in a pretty large area has the same price. I'll occasionally defer filling up by a day or two if the price is relatively high and I expect a change soon (or, conversely, fill up earlier when it's relatively low), but otherwise there isn't much point in paying attention and I don't bother.

Wha?

A substantial amount of the food that ends up in supermarket dumpsters is still safe and edible, given that there's a considerable amount of middle ground between "unsellable" (especially at the full asking price) and "unsafe/inedible." Stale bread, expired products that are still sealed or otherwise are usually good well past their date, produce with some ugly bruises that are easy to cut off... Rather than permitting people to take advantage of that, though, those supermarkets would rather secure their garbage such that everyone that wants food has no choice but to buy it from them (or one of their nearby competitors).

Basically, it's in supermarkets' best financial interests to ensure that nobody gets free food. Lock up the dumpsters, and that means people that can't afford to buy it still end up driving sales by relying on the charity of people who can. Leaving dumpsters unsecured, however, can lead to actual lost sales, such that they'd rather spend money to ensure that food rots than let it go to hungry people.

Hard to say. On one hand, avoiding relationships with coworkers is generally a really good idea, since that can lead to all sorts of messy situations (conflicts of interest, difficulties working together if they break up, etc.). On the other, I don't think it's the employer's place to presume that nobody will be mature enough to handle it and to ban it outright because of that. I think the employer should enact policies that prevent conflicts of interest from arising (no managing your partner/ex, basically), but I don't think forbidding them outright is reasonable.

No, I'm arguing for the sake of providing a complete picture. On its own, "Vaccinated people can still die of Covid" is a quantitatively vague statement that grossly exaggerates that risk by failing to indicate how negligible it really is. There are many people out there (including some in this very topic) that believe the vaccine provides little protection, which is just plain untrue. That belief should be disputed at every possible juncture, not validated with vague comments that can be interpreted as validating it.

If anything, you're the one arguing for the sake of it. Everyone knows it's not perfect protection. Chiming in to say that contributes nothing that everyone doesn't already know, while running the risk of confusing those that aren't sure how the actual numbers play out. So, again: Why?

I wasnt sure how much interest would be. Thats why I just guesstimated But yeah. I mean, he can easily buy it himself. And everybody wins. He just wants to be the sole winner here

I mean, even if we use a very generous estimate of 5% interest and completely ignore any progress he makes on the principal (which is not how anything works, but it simplifies the math in exchange for considerably overestimating the total), that brings the grand total to $17.1 million. Over 10 years, that would be $142,500 per month, which is easily affordable on what he's making. Expand that to 20 years, and he's looking at a total of $27.9 million, which would require $116k per month, for an even more affordable option.

Of course, spending 60-75% of your income on a mortgage generally isn't good financial sense, but again, I've very generously overestimated these to illustrate the point, and it's not like he won't still have enough left over to live comfortably. If he's bent on keeping that house, it's very doable for him to do that without needing to be given it.

It would take him less than 6 years if he paid $150,000 out of the $200,000 he gets a month So, its very doable

Or if he did a 30 year plan, its less than a quarter of the money he gets a month

There is still interest to consider, since presumably he's not in a position to buy it outright, but it would still be very easily achievable in 10 years (and that's likely the period his bank would give him). That, or he could cut a deal wherein she gave it to him outright, but his support payments were slashed to 50k/month for the first 6-7 years to "pay it off" without incurring interest (though that would basically be an interest-free $10M loan, which is a big ask). Either way, he could very easily buy the house himself if he really wants it and still have enough money left over to live in considerable luxury. Wanting it for free is just being greedy and entitled.

Quick math to start the comparison: 700k deaths since March 1, 2020 averages out to 442,100 deaths per year.
https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/deaths.htm

If 2020 and 2021 are statistically similar to 2019 (similar number of deaths, similar breakdown):

  • Covid will account for 15.5% of all deaths in the US
  • Covid will be the 3rd-highest cause of death, beaten only by heart disease and cancer
  • Covid will kill more people than the 5th, 6th, and 7th causes (chronic respiratory disease, strokes, alzheimer's) combined

You are correct that 0.2% of the population dying doesn't mean that America is at risk of being single-handedly wiped out by Covid, but Covid is nonetheless an extremely significant source of mortality, especially for a single contagious disease that acts so quickly (neither heart disease nor cancer can claim any of those points). That should not be diminished.

Stardew Valley should be called a Harvest Moon-like.

The general term there is "farming sim," which encompasses quite a few games, and as a genre, there's a fair amount of overlap between that and any game with base-building mechanics. For a while, they were generally considered to be "Harvest Moon clones", much like ARPG's were Diablo clones, but the term has fallen out of fashion as the genre has expended and Harvest Moon itself has kind of died (or at least had the actual brand co-opted into something very different and not very good and the actual BokuMono games localized as Story of Seasons instead).

Can't really atest to Stardew valley but that's not even a rogue-like, you just farm in both and I guess that's the only similarity? I've played a lot of Nuclear Throne and loved it. I can say the shooter bits aren't as strong as they are in Nuclear Throne but it's still like comparing apples and oranges. While they're both schmups, Nuclear Throne sees you progress through multiple stages. Atomicrops has you always start at the same place (being your plot of land). During the day you go out into the wilds and fight enemy encampments so you can grab seeds, upgrades, equipment, turrets. During night you return to defend your crops from being eaten.

That is roughly my impression, and I can't really complain about this price at all, but I'm also hesitant to buy a bunch of additional games that I have no immediate plans to play when my backlog's as inflated as it is. I'll probably end up going for it, because that really is a better deal than I can expect to ever see again and I'll probably eventually get to enough of the games to make it worthwhile, but I'm still on the fence for now.

the american people are continuing to be GUINEA PIGS in scientists experiments on them with these vaccines!!

I really don't know why people are so worried about this. Everyone knows the government doesn't do questionable, unethical medical experiments on white people. If there were serious concerns, they'd be testing it on minority communities first.

Its a roguelike so Im gonna fucking love it

FYI, the current Humble Monthly has several lesser-known Roguelikes in it and is only $6 for the lot. My impression from skimming reviews is that they generally aren't the best examples of the "genre," but it's hard to argue with that kind of value if you're looking to get your hands on as many as possible.

Your system buying decision hinges on whether or not one minor character that hasn't been featured in a game in 25 years is being added to one game on that system?

As is he could have still got it. Your responses are pointless here.

Not at all. A vague, unquantified "he could still have died from it" that fails to account for how remote that possibility is risks misinforming people that don't know what to believe about the vaccine's efficacy, leading them to believe that it's less effective than it actually is. As somebody who does understand the situation and does know what to believe, I have a responsibility to intervene and keep those people from being misinformed. That's not pointless at all.

You, on the other hand, are saying something that not only contributes nothing of value (literally everyone already understands that the vaccine is not going to be perfect, 100% protection), but actively makes the situation works by potentially misinforming people. Again, I ask: Why would you do that?

Use your words if you're trying to make a point. Don't just dump data with no context and hope it will speak for itself. It's very difficult to help you understand the situation better if you don't indicate your current understanding so the people with which you're discussing the matter can identify the holes in your knowledge that are interfering with it.

Pretty much. Some years are better than others, but the risk is so minimal that whatever potential a given year's vaccine has to save lives handily outweighs it.

The problem there is that we live in an overly litigious society where doing something like potentially leaves a business open to liability. Even something like failing to enforce security around dumpsters can be argued in a court as a tacit policy of giving things away, and they could be held liable for not doing more to prevent it.

It's not that hard to sign the dumpster well enough to absolve them of liability if people get sick eating out of it, especially given how hard it is to pin down the source of any given instance of food-borne illness. Taking such measures to secure dumpsters is overwhelmingly a matter of making sure people pay for the products on the shelves instead of "stealing" something almost as good from the trash.

If you can't trust someone to get the proper legal permits, how can you trust them to faithfully adhere to all health and safety requirements?

Generally speaking, "don't poop on this" is easier to follow than "spend several hundred dollars and wait several weeks to have your facility inspected, then wait another couple weeks for your permit to be processed and approved." Of course, it's a lot harder to say that about "make sure this meat did not exceed 4C at any point in the supply chain," which is a more salient concern, but I'm still inclined to say that it's easy enough to justify cutting bureaucratic corners that I wouldn't presume that to indicate that they cut corners on safety as well.

I might be biased, though. I have a friend who works for the DEP who's told me a few stories about just how criminally irresponsible businesses (both large and small) can be, even when it comes to public health issues.

Which is why I'm baffled by the people that genuinely expect businesses to enact mask mandates and the like of their own volition. In truth, I'm guessing most of them don't actually expect them to and are just saying that because they want masks to go away and they want to pretend they have a nobler guiding principle than that, but it's still a blatantly absurd suggestion.

Reason it does that is cause you wash it every day. If you start to wash it every other day or every three days, after about 1 months it wont do that anymore.

Indeed. It becomes greasy because your body is aggressively trying to restore the oils that have been lost by shampooing it so frequently. If you shampoo less often, you retain a healthy coat of those oils, so your body doesn't have to work so hard to replenish them and therefore stops at a more reasonable amount.

yeah good point. So you dudes think think if not as much food was thrown out, in the world, then there should be enough food for everyone on the planet so no one would ever go hungry?

It's decidedly more complex than that, given the logistics of getting food to the people that need it (especially in more disadvantaged countries that lack the infrastructure and/or have too much political interference to distribute it), but there's really no reason for anyone to be going hungry in the US. Enough food is thrown out because of poor planning and a refusal to do anything that might compromise the profit margins of supermarkets (specifically, discarding anything that doesn't meet the necessary standard to be sold at full price, which is generally a much higher standard than is needed for safety) that fixing those issues would allow pretty much everyone in the country to eat well. But the prevailing attitude is that people who can't afford to buy nutritious food at full price doesn't deserve it, so these issues persist.

If that is already concerning then you don't want to know how much super markets and other stores throw out every day.

That too. This is, sadly, incredibly normal. Even worse, many of those supermarkets put up fences around their dumpsters and employ security guards to keep people from "stealing" the discarded food. I understand that there are liability concerns when it comes to giving people stuff that "should" be thrown out, but stopping people from voluntarily assuming that risk by taking food out of the dumpster is just plain evil levels of greed.

Lol yea because they go for the right strain so often.

Efficacy varies, but to my knowledge, there has never been a flu vaccine that didn't provide enough protection to be at least beneficial enough to offset the statistical risks.

SilentSeph posted...
Isn't it normal to feel a bit crappy after getting the shot?

It's not uncommon. A lot of people mistake it for catching the flu from the vaccine, but it's actually just the immune system responding to the vaccine.
