Do you suffer from Imposter Syndrome?

Imposter syndrome is when a person doubts their skills, talents or accomplishments and feels they aren't as good as other people or aren't good enough for their job or position, despite all the evidence of their competence.

With regards to Neil Armstrong specifically, I can actually feel for him. He was a pilot before becoming an astronaut. Flew planes and made no real contributions to the knowledge community. Great at what he did, for sure, but certainly within a different scope to the alumni he was now standing among.

I'd probably feel out of place too with a background like that. Everyone else would probably find something worthwhile to recognize about my career but I among them would be sweating.

I did when I first joined my current band. Hell, I felt that way for the first two years just because their talent level was through the roof. I finally feel like I've about gotten to their level though after a ton of hard work and it feels good

It's not unrealistic to believe there are, very likely, other people who are better than you at something...

It's probably more crushing to find out that you're nowhere near as good as you imagined you were; and that the only reason you imagined it was because for a while, you were a big fish in a small pond.

I think everyone accepts that. What causes mental blocks is when people think their own ability excludes them from being among those people, even if it's not true.

Yeah, honestly, if you really feel outclassed by the people around you then you're probably right. Usually it's the guy that is overconfident about his ability that is wrong. It can be a good motivator though. Like for my example, good musicians will tell you that the best way to improve your skill is to play with people that are better than you

Don't you actually have to be a highly respected person to have a reason to have imposter syndrome?

Unless you have imposter syndrome while having delusions of grandeur.

In some ways, I'd actually say that feeling like you haven't accomplished anything special when everyone around you disagrees is evidence that you're truly talented. You don't think it's special because it's something you've been able to do relatively easily as part of your everyday life. From the perspective of an outside observer that lacks the talents, experience, or simple hard work that you've put into achieving those things, however, it's not something they could ever imagine themselves accomplishing.

Basically, if you're actually good at doing something, you should have to actively remind yourself how special that is, since your talent will make it feel less remarkable than it is.
