If someone starts working for your company, and insists of everyone calling the "sea otter" there's a level of uncomfort and resentment there that's hard to pin down. Why is it that people always jump to like crazy names, like which trans people do you know (if you know any at all) that are calling themselves weird shit? Most will just ask you to call them a different normal first name. It isn't that hard. Even if it is weird, it doesn't matter. When people tell you their name that's what you call them. They probably aren't showing you their birth certificate so why do you give a fuck? Paratroopa1 12/02/20 2:01:53 AM #92 | DeepsPraw posted... Singular they is mostly fine, but I feel like there are certain situations where it feels a little contrived. I wish I had some concrete examples, but I know it when I hear it. Like there's certain points in natural conversation where avoiding gendered pronouns just sounds artificialI mean, singular they isn't contrived when it's what someone asks you to refer to them as. At that point, it IS a gendered pronoun, you aren't "avoiding gendered pronouns" by using it, you just slot it in wherever it goes. I can't think of a single instance where 'they' grammatically cannot conjugate, so just keep using it, and trust me, eventually you just get used to it. I've been using they/them for people since the late 00's, it's a native part of the language to me at this point. Heck, commentary standards for twitch restreams in all the communities I'm in have gotten to the point that you use 'they/them' for anyone whose gender you don't know, and it eventually becomes automatic even in speech. |

Paratroopa1 12/02/20 1:58:33 AM #90 | MoogleKupo141 posted... theoretically if we could get a consensus on xe/xer or whatever as a neutral option that would be alright, but the thing where people just kinda make up their own pronouns feels like it defeats the purpose of pronouns being generalizable... at some point youve just invented names againI think the problem here is that pronouns, in the way that we created them, are kind of pulling double duty: 1) They simplify language so that we don't need to state someone's name every time we refer to them 2) They denote someone's gender Nobody really finds #1 to be controversial, but #2 is a whole big ass problem that's kind of gotten tangled up with it. Having an infinite number of gender identities with which to describe the wide range of gender-related traits that people have is lovely - I would liken it to having, say, a hundred different words for varying shades of red instead of just the word "red" for all of them - but having an infinite number of pronouns sort of butts heads with goal #1, which is to simplify language, and I think this is where neopronouns run into a stumbling block, because different people kind of have different things they want to achieve with them. |

Paratroopa1 12/02/20 1:41:08 AM #83 | HeroDelTiempo17 posted... remember when people were trying to make stuff like "xir" and "thon" happen and were ridiculed? and by now we've just settled on singular they because, as mentioned, it has an established historical usage despite what pedants say?I know a couple of neopronoun users, it's still a thing! But trying to get even some very accepting communities to go along with it is kind of like pulling teeth because people feel like they're being strung along in some kind of weird social experiment, so they often give up. Singular they/them has a great deal more established footing, so people take to it pretty quick. |

Paratroopa1 12/02/20 1:36:49 AM #81 | Singular they/them and plural they/them being confusing IS ACTUALLY something I have seen happen, so it's not like, an entirely fictional problem - but the confusion is generally brief, filled in by context, and at worst, still not really that big a deal in comparison to the happiness and comfort of millions of people and the glow on their faces when you call them by their preferred pronouns. Were it the case that we had a more effective way to introduce a non-gendered pronoun to the english language, we would, but we don't, because this is still the least hostilely-greeted option by a wide margin, and hell, for any english speaker this is nothing new - we put up with the language's weird quirks all the dang time. |

Paratroopa1 12/02/20 1:28:13 AM #78 | It can take time getting used to, sure! But that doesn't mean you can't be a "they." I know this is the case because I know many wonderful they's who exist just fine in communities that use their pronouns and don't get confused by them. If it's challenging to get used to at first, that's perfectly fine, but don't mistake that for an insistence that we're all wrong for getting on just fine with singular they/them. It's around, it's not going anywhere, and you'll get used to it with time. |
