Democrats don't vote in midterm elections when there is no existential threat - 2022 is all but guaranteed to give us a republican senate and republican house. I want to make one thing clear here - the kind of map we're headed towards is NOT the kind of map that I gave 538's model shit for, ever. Georgia and Arizona blue with Florida and NC red, or anything like that - really, any combination only involving swing states - was nothing I considered weird at all. We're headed for a pretty normal map. The kind of shit I gave 538's model shit for spitting out was like, literally the map that had Hawaii and NJ red and Louisiana blue. That kind of shit seriously damaged the model's credibility. That is NOT what is happening tonight, even remotely.

Yeah I feel like it's a bit forced the way they end up stopping the game in case 6. This is why I really like my suggestion earlier of having 3-5 actually revealed to the audience to be a sham - it would destabilize the whole operation like nothing ever had before, and Kokichi going out making the whole game's audience realize the whole thing's a fraud would've been such a goddamn baller move. And then Keebo, instead of just having his antenna randomly clipped, could instead go insane because of all the angry people in his head, and then have to work through that instead. I dunno, just feels like it would have been a smoother transition into the rest of the cast being able to get Danganronpa canceled.

I can't remember if I ever described this but I had a theory in 3-6 that didn't pan out that still really upsets me - when they threw in that red herring about Kaede having a twin sister, I thought for sure that it was going to turn out that the Kaede we knew in the game told the TV show's producers something like, "I want to be just like my sister Kaede, she's amazing," which would give both Shuichi and the player that little twinkle of light in the distance knowing that the "real" Kaede is out there somewhere, even if our Kaede died - I think it would have been a nice way to bring things full circle and to sort of apologize for being so cruel in taking Kaede away from us in the first place, without disrupting the impact her death had in the first place. (They could have also brought back the time Tsumugi showed us having cospox when dressing up as Kaede - if it turned out that cospox was a real phenomenon and she couldn't cosplay Kaede because she was based on a real person!) But they didn't do that, it was just a dumb red herring, lol. I do think it would have been nice if they 'closed the loop' on Kaede in the end, just to give us some kind of thematic meaning to her death or some sort of way in which that outcome meant something in the end, but oh well.

I don't think anything beats the gut-punch of losing the first female protagonist. That was very clearly set up to hurt the player as much as possible.

I think what you described as an alternative is actually a difference in how V3 approaches emotion vs. DR1 and DR2. The first games talk about despair a lot but as far as the player is concerned, it's something you dabble in rather than experience. You're watching the characters go through despair and maybe experiencing it vicariously but it's not YOUR despair, it's the characters'. V3 does a far better job at attacking the player directly. The 'start as Ultimate Detective and switch to a random character' thing isn't an intrinsic emotional beat - it's just a twist and potentially interesting. Kaede was built up in the marketing as the first female protagonist, and they HAD to know there was a demand for that, which is why they gave you what you wanted and ripped it away from you.

Then you get to Gonta's trial, which is more of an anti-trial in how it serves to demystify the killer aspect and make the player as upset as possible with how it plays out, and the final case speaks for itself. When doing things well, V3 is very good at making the player feel despair, which is ironic considering it's the game where hope/despair matters the least in the story.
This is good analysis, I see your point

I don't think I should repost this in the thread just because of the possibility of implied spoilers, even though there aren't really any, but this was my list of "who is most likely to be the mastermind" immediately after meeting all the characters:

1. Maki
2. Tsumugi
---
3. Rantaro
4. Kokichi
5. Shuichi
---
6. K1-B0
7. Himiko
8. Angie
9. Kirumi
10. Korekiyo
11. Kaito
12. Someone Else
---
13. Miu
14. Kaede
15. Gonta
16. Ryoma
17. Tenko

I think I did pretty well, given that I had the right person in the top tier! But I understand his suspicion of Maki, since there's obviously SOMETHING going on with her - I knew almost right away in chapter 2 that she was gonna get promoted to sidekick.

Shuichi's the more interesting character, so I'm okay with it.
I do like Shuichi as a very different take on a DR protag, and a different take on being an Ultimate Detective as well, so I'm still good with it, but I think rewriting it just a touch to have the player start as the Ultimate Detective, go "oh that's different", but then have him die and switch to a random cast member out of nowhere would have had even more punch. Although the way they wrote their personalities it works better this way, so Kaede would have needed to grow into her role a bit more and Shuichi would have needed to not.

BOY WON'T HE BE SURPRISED (to be fair, I was too, because it's fucking hilarious that Himiko survives what is otherwise a total bloodbath of a game)

They keep teasing the possibility of her dying, though, and I think they were doing it on purpose - she was made to look like someone who would be a victim who inexplicably lived because DRV3 is all about defying the expectations of a player who has played DR1 and DR2, something Anagram really failed to pick up on

Translating the characters' titles as "Super High School-level" instead of "Ultimate" is hilarious, I have to assume that was to match lip flaps.

No, "Ultimate" was a localization in the first place. Super High School Level is the literal translation of their title in Japanese, which was THANKFULLY changed to Ultimate in the game localizations.

Junko's anime voice actress should be strangled to death.

Oh my god, what. Junko's voice actress in DR3 is like the one thing I come to DR3 for, lol. It's absolutely incredible to me how she takes a character I find really stupid in the games and makes her fun and lively - she's legit one of my favorite characters in the franchise in DR3 only! Seriously, I just love what they did with her in DR3 where she seems to have... an actually coherent personality and character motivations, as opposed to the games where she just seems like she's doing a schtick the whole time and has no personality of her own.

February to May probably won't be too bad - March and April can be very rainy but the weather will get cheerier compared to December and January which are slogs. Rain here, by the way, tends to be light and cold, and persistent. It tends to rain for the whole day when it rains, but it doesn't rain like it does in the eastern half of the US where it just pours down on you like a bucket, it's much more drizzly. It's not really as bad as it sounds and I think it can be quite pretty, but it does have a reputation for frequency and duration.

Parking in Seattle is not great, I share your anxiety about parking downtown. A possible option is to park at any number of park and rides on the outskirts of the city and take the bus - for instance, if I am going to Seattle, I will often park at Northgate and then take the bus to where I want to go. It's not cheap, but neither is parking in Seattle unless you're lucky and find good street parking, and it avoids the stress of driving around downtown. It's a possibility you may want to consider - the bus system in Seattle is pretty robust.

Washington is an amazing place but Seattle is low key one of the most boring major cities in America.

If you're coming here from the midwest prepare to be looked at like a monster whenever you try to act warm or good natured.

Will dissent on these two points, Seattle is plenty interesting enough (I mean, it probably doesn't compare to New York or Chicago, but what are you gonna do) and I think people are mostly just distant rather than allergic to social contact at all.

Hey, I'm not super well-informed on housing or costs in the area but things I can say:

Cost of living goes up the closer you are to the city, especially as far as rent is concerned - Seattle is unfortunately well known for being pretty costly to live in. Don't know for sure how hard it'll be to find a place.

It does get cheaper the further out into the suburbs you go, but do keep in mind that this is a very car-necessary region. Seattle itself is a very walkable city (mind the hills though) and has really solid public transit (great busses) but the further out of the city you go the harder it is to get anywhere without a car. Options exist, but the vast majority of people who live here own a car. We are trying to build light rail and expand bus services to help with this but we're not there yet.

I think the region is pretty un-culture shocky, I don't know the midwest but probably the most notable thing here is the "Seattle freeze", people are polite but very quiet and don't approach each other as often - expect people to not greet you on the street too much, and friends are known to be sort of hard to make. It's not hostility, it's just social anxiety, mostly. People are nice.

That's really all of my vague advice, I'm really bad on the specifics, maybe others know more. I don't have any particular opinions on which areas are particularly bad or good to go. Aside from the caveats of being a bit costly and not super easy to get around I like the region a lot, can recommend it as a nice place to live.

Danganronpa is definitely the most long-winded of the series, which can be really annoying. Characters rarely just get to the fuckin' point.

I think 3-5 is great but I think they botched the ending. I think it sucks that Kaito just kind of gives up on the plan for no apparent reason after coming that far - I think 3-5 would have been a lot more satisfying if Kokichi and Kaito's plan WORKED, in one of two ways:

a) Everyone votes for Kokichi at the end, Monokuma confirms that it's correct and goes to execute the person in the mech, but Kaito pops out in a dramatic reveal at that moment, to the rest of the group's surprise, greatly upsetting the TV audience who realizes the game is rigged, and this makes K1-B0 go crazy instead which ushers 3-6 in a different way, with everything mostly going the same from that point.

b) The plan nearly reveals the game as a fraud, but Tsumugi is forced to take action to resolve the situation from the inside since Monokuma is unable to; Kokichi and Kaito are thwarted but ultimately score a victory in forcing Tsumugi to slip up in a way that is ultimately her grand downfall in 3-6.

I think either of these would be GREAT ways to tie 3-5 into the plot, but instead, 3-5... doesn't actually really accomplish anything, even though Kokichi and Kaito have a GENIUS plan that deserves to actually score some sort of small but decisive victory in ending Danganronpa. But it doesn't. I think that's such a huge missed opportunity.

As I was watching the video, I found myself silently rooting for the underdog - at first that was the Alliance because it seemed like MR's quest for 32/32 was inevitable and their victories were incredibly hard fought, but as they kept stymieing him, MR became the underdog and I was rooting for him to pull it off in the end, which is what made this such a compelling narrative imo - the push and pull of who had the upper hand. But I mean, 'rooting' doesn't mean I saw the other side as villains, of course - that's just completely childish.

ZE and DR are pretty close for me. I think the games are on similar footing (I love VLR and DRV3, I like 999 and DR2, I don't think highly of DR1 and ZTD), but overall I just prefer ZE's style, I don't like most of DR's cast and its general vibe that much and that kinda hurts it for me.
