To the best of my knowledge, India and Pakistan are only two separate countries because British influence separated the Bengal and Punjab provinces into separate countries based on religious majorities in both locations. The decision resulted in mass displacement and severe violence. There are areas in India where the massacre of Muslim people was either condoned or unimpeded by the rulers of the respective provinces, which regardless of the more fundamentalist, conservative sects of Islam that have taken hold, is seriously fucked up. | MrMallard 02/20/20 5:16:29 AM #6 | Ultima Dragon posted... Eh, I don't know that I really agree. Some of them are incredibly stupid, sure, but I still find it interesting that people can see pretty much whatever they want in any form of media and even bring up (somewhat credible) "evidence" to support their case. I agree, actually. I don't mind people running media through different schools of thought, or if a theory makes a solid point about a work. Recently there was a hubbub about people viewing the original Matrix movie through a trans lens and finding a few things that lined up with the trans experience, despite both of its creators viewing themselves/presenting themselves as cisgender at the time. I found that process incredibly interesting. There's also videos on YouTube arguing about death of the author and other literary concepts, and as I mentioned I don't mind creepypastas that don't cross the line into "the character seemed to be reading my mind and then they told me to cook myself in the oven, I only survived because my mom saw me climbing in and stopped me". I absolutely appreciate a good fan theory. My beef is when the theory posits that the thing in question actually has a dark, cynical, adult side that none of us every thought about, and proceeds to list a bunch of shit about how everyone's dead or that a bunch of characters were being molested by the main adult figure in the show or something like that. Like the only way that a self-respecting adult can enjoy something is for it to be about death, mental illness or sexual themes. I remember seeing a theory like "the Winnie the Pooh characters represent a different mental illness", and by the title alone I was gonna include it in this post I'm making. But I thought about it - Piglet represents anxiety, Tigger represents ADHD or mania, Eeyore is depression (obv), and while it doesn't represent every Winnie the Pooh character necessarily it does make a couple of inspired points. I'm still tempted to say that it falls in with the Dead Rugrats theory, but given that it doesn't go all "they're all personifications of these concepts in the mind of a disturbed little boy with no future" - which it might, if Pooh and the gang are meant to be concepts imagined by Christopher Robin based on his plush toys, which might be a canonical interpretation of the Winnie the Pooh franchise - I haven't minded that theory in the past, on a basic surface level. Could still be a bunch of shit, but it didn't outright repulse me. --- Now Playing: Borderlands 2, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed |

I'm sick of the dumbass edgy theories about kid's entertainment. It was tired and boring in 2012, and it's tired and boring now. What's the deal behind the Rugrats theory where all the babies are actually dead and figments of Angelica's imagination, or the Totoro theory that posits that the movie is based in a murder case where two young girls were murdered in the 1950's? It's like some dumb shits can't enjoy something made for a young audience unless it has some dumb, dipshit "deeper meaning" to it to excuse their enjoyment of it as an adult. Similar case with like shitty creepypastas that go "I played Pokemon Red but there was a hyperrealistic ghost hand that was covered in blood and it made me throw up and the game said it was going to murder me in my sleep" - I don't mind creepypastas like Pokemon Black that's like "yeah this game felt like a romhack, I had a ghost Pokemon that kept killing other trainers before turning on me, I played it a good 6 or 7 times and it played the same the whole time", but the whole Sonic.exe level shit is just annoying and garbage. Totoro is a character-driven movie with whimsical elements, with very little plot. It's a loosely structured adventure based in whimsy and imagination. And Rugrats is a cartoon about babies who can communicate with each other in their own baby language and who see the world through their own baby eyes, while the audience gets glimpses of the adult's vision of what's actually happening. You don't have to dress it up as "actually the characters were claimed by the god of death at the end, and were actually murdered or drowned like these two girls in real life" or "all the babies were dead and Angelica created personalities for them based on when and how they died". It's not that deep. Fucking stop it. And of course - no, as much as the internet wants to break through and make this theory a reality, Chihiro from Spirited Away is not a child prostitute and the gold scene isn't an allegory for the fat, wealthy, anonymous elite having sex with children in bath houses. That dismisses the whole plotline with Chihiro and Haku's names, the fantastical elements like the train that operates in the shallows and the theme of growing up and adapting to change. It's lame, edgy shit that dismisses the merits of these pieces of media for the sake of cynicism, for the sake of making something about something it's not so some edgy dipshit can enjoy it on a "deeper" or "ironic" level. --- Now Playing: Borderlands 2, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed |

Some police officers idolize the Punisher, to the point of wearing memorabilia depicting his unique skull motif, and some pro-police organisations use the same symbol in their support of the police force. Despite the Punisher raising questions of excessive force, the breakdown of law and order in favor of disproportionate violence/vigilantism and authoritarianism, there are police officers who look at the Punisher and go "damn the Punisher is a badass, I wish I could go around blasting scumbags like that!". Do you think that a police officer who puts the Publisher's violent acts on a pedestal, and/or who grossly misinterpret the character as a violent power fantasy rather than as a morally questionable mass-murdering vigilante, is more at risk of being a bad cop than a police officer who approaches the character with a broader perspective on his actions? --- Now Playing: Borderlands 2, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed |

| MrMallard 02/19/20 12:10:00 AM #19 | coh posted... Too bad it was a weak ass console power wise compared to Xbox and Gamecube That's true, but it still managed to sell 155 million consoles over the course of its life and it occasionally had the best version of a game with ports on the Xbox and GameCube due to better optimisation or with development being done with the PS2 in mind. It also had an unbeatable JRPG library, with many games coming to the PS2 that wouldn't be released on the other two consoles - as well as the console just crushing it with their exclusives in general. You can talk about power all you want, but it doesn't change how much of a phenomenon the PS2 was. The fact of the matter is that despite its limited power compared to its contemporaries, it still kicked everything else's ass - the Xbox had a solid enough start, but it ultimately had poor sales. And the GameCube, despite its power, represented a hiccup in Nintendo sales as the console took a back seat to Sony for the second generation in a row. Sony snaked in with the cheapest DVD player on the market, the earliest launch date and a massive amount of goodwill from Japanese and American developers - and despite its weaker power in the long run, it crushed the competition. The PS2 isn't that comparable to the Wii because the Wii was a standard definition console competing with high-definition consoles. It was the least powerful console between it, the GameCube and the Xbox, but they were playing in the same ballpark. The Wii stuck to standard definition when its competition were gunning for the next level of graphical fidelity and polish, and it's arguably aged even less gracefully than the PS2 compared to their respective contemporaries because of this. --- Now Playing: Borderlands 2, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed |

It was in the last stint of consoles before microtransactions and day-one patches, and it's new enough to still hold up pretty well in the gameplay department - with some games still looking very good in the graphical department - while not relying on a movie-size budget to put out some of the heavy hitters of the industry. It also provided backwards compatibility that was only ever matched/exceeded by the GBA, early-run PS3s and the Xbone, and its DVD drive was a stroke of genius that resulted in its position as the best selling games console of all time. The PS2 is an absolute beast. No wonder it was still putting out games into the 2010's. --- Now Playing: Borderlands 2, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed |

After a while everything would settle down and the internet would generally be a civil, decent place. Content creators like Shen and that Adam Tots guy still draw comics and post them on the platform, and while at least one mutual follower of mine left the platform in the wake of the "Tumblrpocalypse", a vast majority of people in my social circle didn't. The company behind WordPress bought Tumblr for an undisclosed amount. It's undoubtedly smaller than Yahoo's $1.1 billion dollar acquisition, to the point that it wouldn't surprise me if Yahoo lost a cool $1 billion in the transaction. They're planning to reform the place to try and make it profitable, or at least result in less of a loss - Tumblr is a notorious money sink. People still post on there. The bots are still there, rendering the fuck ban completely useless, and the fuck ban is indeed still in place to some degree. NSFW creators get by though, they're just marked with a special avatar and you have to consent to viewing their blog due to adult content. But here's a figure for you. In the last couple of weeks, there's been this new meme post I've seen spring up dozens of times. First time I saw it it was a low 4 figures, now it's a mid/high five figures. | MrMallard 02/14/20 8:36:39 PM #38 | That blurb sounds like she's swinging between extremes. I only started posting on GameFAQs after I fell out of social justice posting on Tumblr, I couldn't keep up with all the new hashtags and victims of police violence that were popping up every day in the wake of Michael Brown's death. Even as I walked away, I felt bad for the people being killed, but I couldn't memorise all of these different hashtags, names and faces a month for every bad thing that happens. There were weeks where like 3 people would be given the hashtag treatment, and it led to fatigue. Every time someone was killed, someone was impassioned. That's good, I understand the fight to expose police brutality and discuss the disproportionate amount of minority deaths at the hands of police compared to arrests and sentencing. But how can I move on from one #Remember[Name] post to another two of them in the span of a week? Even if reblogging shit on Tumblr was all I could do, how could I keep going on like that when the posts move on so fast from the last victim? For the sake of my sanity, I couldn't treat every post-BLM victim as the face of a movement. Everyone was getting 15 seconds of fame in their death, and I didn't feel right reblogging every last post for the sake of appearing woke. I couldn't keep up, so I walked away for a while. I'm still pretty far left, but I had to clear my palate and take some time to really figure myself out. GameFAQs was the alternative I chose for the topics that weren't all squeaky clean. Eventually I made friends with Bok Choi and started chatting on Discords and stuff. Then I freaked the fuck out on CE and left - again, I swung between extremes. I stayed off here for months because I didn't like the sort of person I was becoming on this platform. Nowadays I can balance myself better, I know what my values are and they're not going to get skewed so easily. Going from a lefty Democrat to a Trump supporter is a pretty extreme swing. The thing about ideological movements is that once you're in, it's going to be emotionally taxing to break away from it again. You'll feel like you're doing the wrong thing or being selfish, all the negativity levelled against the movement's enemies may get levelled at you for going against the group, and overall it's a bad time. A lot of the guilt I felt walking away from social justice posting was ultimately me putting that weight on my own shoulders, I never had any clout and my Tumblr followers and followed blogs weren't the virulent, witch-hunt types. But those types of callout blogs were out there, and people were cancelled for not stepping into line - even if it meant digging 5+ years into someone's internet history to get buttmad about. Trump's base is far-right, and they're locked-in to the point of delusion. You have people who loved celebrities like Robert de Niro for years, who collected memorabilia, and the second that celebrity goes against Trump these people are breaking their shit on social media to "send a message". Even the most moderate Trump support serves as a gateway to hate groups and other loony far-right shit, because so many other Trump fans are fanning those flames of division and hate that you're bound to slip into worse and worse habits as you go deeper down the rabbit hole. It feels like a wake-up call to see the really shitty, militant lefty keyboard warriors fucking people over, and that can lead to a justified swing towards topics and places you've typically avoided. But by swinging hard into Trump, you're only going to go through the same process again. Yeah, those militant lefty dipshits are assholes and what they did isn't excusable, but swinging into Trump will almost certainly see you allying with much, much worse people and the potential for radicalisation is that much higher. The trick in finding a middle ground that's right for you, at the end of the day, is to resist the signs of radicalisation once you feel them set in, and live by your own values separate from the people who would force you into a box. Swinging from super-lefty into Trump supporter is like jumping out of the frying pan and off a cliff - at the end of the day, it's better to set boundaries on shit to keep you on the right track with wiggle room to explore ideas and concepts that the most extreme side of any political compass will disincentivise you from exploring. --- Now Playing: Borderlands 2, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed |
