With the rumors surrounding TRoS, I'm more willing to say that TLJ was most likely screwed by Disney. That's not to say that Rian Johnson didn't make some bum calls, but I can attribute everything I didn't like about TLJ to trends in Disney.

As far as Luke goes, I actually really liked how he was written. Even the jokes he got were pretty funny, one of the only jokes I liked in that movie was the scene with the reed. Dude has good delivery. But the humor as a whole really detracted from the experience.

Star Wars can be funny - The Force Awakens was a solid enough flick most of the time, and its use of humor was pretty decent. But TLJ felt like it was trying to chase Guardians of the Galaxy with its snarky, irreverent humor. I'm sure the script had a more humorous bent at times, but when it comes to Poe's godawful "yo mama" joke and the glut of shit like that, I can't help but think it came down to Disney padding the movie out with shit like that. After all, it sold with Guardians and Thor Ragnarok. What if people like the new, goofy Star Wars?

The other thing that bothered me most was the scene with the alien horse dog things at Canto Bight. I actually don't mind Canto Bight as a whole - I like the wacky aliens, the jizz music and even that joke with BB-8 and the coins was alright. I don't like the codebreaker stuff, but I don't mind Canto Bight so much - they just needed to cut it down a bit. The thing that makes that sideplot incredibly tedious is the extended chase sequence through the city streets. That always felt like Disney jerking themselves off, like they just blasted a wad of "Fuck You We're Disney" money all over TLJ's face for a bloated-ass chase scene. Again - not necessarily Rian Johnson's vision, given how blatant and self indulgent the whole thing is to the degree that it is. Seeing as Disney is the company with the cash and the panel of creative directors who dictate what is and isn't Star Wars, there's a case that dumb filler like that was their doing too.

You can see in deleted scenes that Rian Johnson directed some pretty decent Star Wars scenes that were left out of the movie for cheap schlock. I liked Finn's "Rebel scum" comeback in the movie, even if I thought the whole fight scene around it was the worst kind of cheese. But the deleted scene version doesn't have that shit-eating grin aspect to it, and I would say it's much better:

https://youtu.be/UzeIb-TZo_I

When a movie's not great, it comes down to the director. But we've seen before and after TLJ that Rian Johnson is a decent director who's made some pretty good stuff. This isn't to say that he was locked behind the wheel and couldn't change the movie's course, nor that everything he shot and believed in would have been much better without Disney potentially fucking him in the ass. But I think with the distance between us and TLJ's release, and seeing what J.J. Abrams' Rise of Skywalker became, I think it's worth taking into account that TLJ's worst aspects may have been exacerbated or even mandated by Disney themselves.

Topic19 y/o GAMER GIRL says her EX tried to ASSASSINATE HER!! Whose side you on??
MrMallard

Something that's worth noting is that in 2016, Alexis was 15-16 and Adrian was 19-20. That alone should be ringing alarm bells, a guy who's out of high school by at least a year chatting up girls who are 5 years younger than him. There's a case there for grooming.

Another thing that's bugging me is the response from Adrian. Allegations like this are extreme, so I can forgive people for being emotional, but it's such a huge reaction from someone who's purported to have been controlling, abusive and otherwise toxic. A guy who says "you deserve everything bad that ever happens to you" in response to a break up, but who spits the dummy and tells some tabloid rag that his life is ruined thanks to these clearly false allegations, comes across as a real piece of work. This sort of manipulation is common for abusers - overreact and pin as much shit as you can on the other party so everything becomes their fault.

This shit is like Harvey Weinstein donning a pair of ugly old-man glasses and using a walker at his rape trial. Obviously it's on a much smaller scale, but it's a token act meant to invoke pity. He escalated and went to the media about this with a full campaign of "deny everything, pin it on her", he had his mum talking to the tabloid about what a good boy he is and he almost certainly wished harm upon her during their break up. This chud is playing the victim in the face of this woman having an assassin sent after her, and I think that's really gross.

So yeah, if it turns out not to be him, feel free to @ me about it and remind me of it daily if that's your bag. But understand that it's really hard to take a guy like this at his word - someone who groomed a 15 year old at 19 years old, someone who's been characterised as controlling and toxic, someone who's gone to one of Britain's biggest tabloid rags to cry about it and who tried to make his ex believe she deserved any harm that comes to her in the wake of their break up. He comes across as a fucking psycho, and if he doesn't want the negative attention that comes from people scrutinising his behavior online, he shouldn't have gone to the Daily Mail to play a severely affected victim days after his ex was targeted with a fucking assassin.

My first fanfiction writing experience was a screenplay-type story about Yoshitmitsu from Tekken, he would have dueled Kunimitsu to the death because she kept murdering dudes.

First fanfiction reading experience was the MissingNo. story on TRsrockin, where its glitch powers threatened to tear reality apart at the seams. I specifically remember the fallout to one attack glitching out an entire city, based on the Glitch City bug in Pokemon Red/Blue.

A racist hick with a minor position of power heads a small militia with a neo-Nazi shitbag to harass Mexican people and report them to border security to try and get them deported. Some of these people have been targeted multiple times by the militia despite being US citizens.

It's clearly meant to be parody, exaggerating a stereotype that a lot of people buy into. That stereotype clearly existed before 2013, when the game launched. But with Trump's rhetoric since 2016 and the rise of ICE, it's hard not to feel like these missions ring a bit closer to home than Rockstar might have intended them to in 2013.

Fair enough, but you would still think that the conservatives would care enough about their "Make America Great", "America First" rhetoric to care when policies like this stand to affect thousands of innocent American lives. The poor, homeless and disabled are all still American, and you'd think a part of making America great would be to elevate these Americans to a position of security instead of disproportionately targeting them and making their lives worse, either directly or through snap decisions that indirectly stand to ruin their lives further.

I guess it's the same sort of deal that has conservatives crying "freedom of religion!" before telling Muslim and Jewish people that "this is America and we don't have to cater to your fruitcake beliefs". God, conservatives are shitty.

All she has to do is say "Sorry, I've got another job on, I won't be able to make the shoot". Instead she makes a grand point about how her love of God conflicts with her ability to work for gay people, and expects the law to excuse her clear and flagrant discrimination.

She could have refused the shoot and made up some BS story about another job, just to be polite. If she didn't want to do the wedding, there was an out she could take. Instead she played the "muh first amendment rights!" card and took it to court. Sounds like a bad faith excuse for discrimination to me.

But of course she has that golden turd's staff backing her up. Gotta milk religious freedom as much as you can while that sack of shit is still in power with his crony Pence. And you know that if someone from another religion complains about people not respecting their beliefs, you'll have the usual suspects telling them to get over it and get used to America.

You watch Iron Chef and you know that the iron chefs don't actually win "fame forever" and you know that the guy who supposedly built Kitchen Stadium with his masssive fortune is just an actor who's there to add flair to the whole thing. It's all a facade for the sake of drama.

Nothing is legally stopping these people from getting each other's contact details and meeting up later in real life, or bumping into each other in a scenario with a one-in-a-million chance of happening. Netflix can't legally stop that from happening. Much like Iron Chef's incredible theatrics, it's just window dressing.

MrMallard
02/27/20 7:19:46 PM
#15
I thought the title read "is it bad if I pull out on the first date?" - to which I say, if you're gonna fuck without protection, you'd better hope you pull out on the first date.

But to answer the actual question being asked - if you like sex, go and get that sex. The "three dates" rule that gets bandied around feels really lame. If you like sex and want to have it, and your date feels similarly, then there's no reason not to fuck.

I suppose the social expectation is there so that you can get to know someone first before deciding to enter a sexual relationship with them, after you fuck them the first time you might learn that they're batshit crazy or that your values as people don't line up. But having sealed that deal, there might be an obligation to let them down and cut ties that wouldn't be such a big deal if you had just dated them for a little while longer.

My view on this is that if you want to fuck and so does your date, you should just fuck. The three date rule is just a social guideline, not an immutable rule of the dating world. There's a chance that you could end up fucking the wrong people and regretting it afterwards, but you could very well find someone whose sexual appetite complements your own and who you really, really like on the whole. You're bound to get some duds like this guy, but if you feel like doing stuff, why wait?

TopicITT, you (attempt to) explain why we shouldn't legalize ALL drugs...
MrMallard
02/27/20 7:04:58 PM
#277
Weed is fine. It's not 100% harmless, but in a world where we allow so many people to drink and smoke, it really isn't that big of a deal. We've got so many different alcoholic beverages out there that have the power to change your mood - rum gets people angry, wine turns people into incoherent shit-faced messes, beer is a social drink that takes more liquid than wine to get shit-faced, and has a chance to make certain people aggressive like with rum. Gin makes people more emotional, which can itself lead to dysfunction.

We allow legal consenting adults to make a free, informed decision about alcohol. There's room to abuse this, someone's favorite alcohol might be the one that makes them seething and hateful and result in violence - but we let them buy it anyway. I've never seen someone go into weed-induced psychosis, and even as a worse habit than tobacco, it seems pretty fucking stupid not to let people smoke some green on their own time when companies continue to pedal the "soft drug" of nicotine out of a sense of tradition, or because they were grandfathered into the regulation of illicit substances due to its wide popularity. We let people destroy their lungs, liver and kidneys with booze and smokes - weed isn't that far removed from booze and smokes.

Another factor - you can grow it yourself in an ethical manner. Meth is completely artificial, people make that shit with chemicals found in strong cough syrup and it's cooked until it crystallises - it fucks your brain up faster and more thoroughly than smokes, weed or alcohol. Cocaine comes from a plant, but ingesting too much of it in one go can result in overdoses and, inevitably, a premature death. I'm not sure how one processes poppy seeds to get cocaine, but I doubt the process is as bountiful or as safe as picking some leaves off a plant, drying them and rolling them up.

Unless you distil the THC or whatever and take it in a purer form, like a fucking moron, you're not going to overdose on weed. And even if you do smoke enough weed to overwhelm your body, that dose is at a much, much higher threshold than coke or meth. You'd have to set a world record for the most weed smoked in a night to OD on THC from smoking. Hell, it could be at a higher threshold than alcohol - one ridiculous night of drinking can give you blood poisoning and put you in the ground.

Coke, meth, ice, heroin - all allow for easy ODs, all of them fuck up the brain much faster than alcohol, smokes or weed. You're asking for people to be mentally incapacitated by 30 if you think legalising methamphetamines or heroin is a good idea, while coke users seem to be tapping out in their early 70's at most. Maybe regulating cocaine in a strict environment, like a hash bar or opium den sort of deal, could be a viable option - I don't have much of a positive opinion on coke, mostly related to the kind of shit assholes like to cut it with to make more money. But the crux of my argument is that weed should definitely be legalised for any informed, consenting adults to engage with, in the same way that we allow people to drink alcohol. It's all harmful shit that's going to shorten our lifespans, and pot is probably the safest illicit substance that hasn't been legalised.

No idea why they thought going head to head with Animal Crossing would be a good idea. They're basically signing their own death warrant.

In all seriousness though, I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with Doom Eternal. 2016 was well received, but I rememger a few criticisms of the wave rooms, where you would basically fight it out with some demons in a big arena room every few levels or whatever - despite the game being much, much better than most people gave it credit for from its multiplayer demo, people seemed to find those arenas a bit samey and repetitive. Along with Eternal cutting instadeath in regards to falling off the map, here's hoping they streamline the gameplay into its best possible form.

That's a pretty solid list tbh. There are some first, second and third gen Pokemon, there are some new Pokemon and there seems like a decent enough spread from the rest of the gens as well. It seems like a pretty well balanced list, not dominated by like genwunners, and the picks seem pretty fair.

Since I apparently can't edit post 3, change Asuka to Azula. It's been years since I watched the show, but I know the most pertinent points off the top of my head.

I guess there's precedent. We had Edward Norton as Hulk getting replaced, and Mark Ruffalo ended up being a superb Bruce Banner. I feel bad for Terrance Howard, I think he should have been given a chance as War Machine, but Don Cheadle is awesome.

Brie Larson isn't too bad, and people are going to be lost if you make a sequel to Larson's Captain Marvel with an entirely new face in the lead role. You'd either have to do a second origin story for another Captain Marvel, or pretend Brie Larson never existed - which is a step beyond replacing Edward Norton in a franchise where the Hulk hasn't had a standalone movie since the actor change, or recasting a side character with an established star. Name a series where the lead actor changes with every movie, and stays consistently watchable - I'll wait. The only one I can think of is the Punisher, three movies with three different lead actors. No-one gives a shit about them, and their lack of consistency is telling.

Brie Larson as Captain Marvel is fine, no-one worth listening to actually wants to recast her.

By employing a trained police force made up of multiple schools of bending who can work together to combat criminals, and by finding methods of containment that can hold a bender without hurting anyone.

The thing about bending is that it's an inherently personal trait that people are born with. I know Korra took a different approach with the lore, but as far as the original show goes it's fairly traditional. You're born with the ability to bend one of the elements, like an extra sense or an additional limb. To remove that from someone is to strip them of that additional sense. It's cruel, in the same sense that it's cruel to cut someone's hand off for stealing a loaf of bread.

The Fire Nation was the Avatar world's equivalent to WWII Germany. They wiped out an entire race of benders, conquered and enslaved their way through multiple nations and used prisoners of war as slave labor to run their war machine. When Aang took Ozai's bending away, he was razing the entire Earth Kingdom to the ground. He was exercising an extreme measure against a person who would otherwise slaughter millions of innocent people. With Ozai out of the way, there are very few opponents with the amount of physical or political power that Ozai had.

Deciding who can and can't bend is a step towards authoritarianism - it's like cutting off a finger/limb or deafening someone, or somehow taking away their ability to read, and saying it's okay because the authorities deemed it to be a just punishment. Bending is also intrinsic to the culture where someone comes from, so in effect you're taking away a deeply entrenched part of their culture at the same time. Much like how the law prohibits cruel and unusual punishment, taking away another person's additional sense would be a fucked up punishment.

Characters like Asuka who are incredibly strong benders in their own right - and in her case, responsible for committing war crimes - are contained. A character like Amon could be contained. It's been a while since I've seen the show, but mercenaries like Combustion Man can most likely be contained in the right prison. To turn something of a holy figure like the Avatar into a tool for dispensing justice, taking someone who a great majority of the world idolises as a mythical being and having them decide who should and shouldn't be allowed to bend, would be exposing that figure to corruption. It would also add an element of fear and authority to the Avatar, which invites authoritarianism.

If Aang buys into that way of thinking, he's suddenly the arbiter of who deserves to lose one of their senses, and in a sense to strip away someone's culture. I don't think Aang would find this concept to be just. Powerful benders can be contained - Ozai was the most powerful man on the planet, both physically and politically, and in the situation in which Aang removed his bending he had a massive power boost and was actively about to commit mass genocide. Aang's options were to kill him, or remove his bending, to which Aang took the least lethal option to preserve Ozai's life. Turning that last-resort power that stopped a mass genocide into a tool of justice only serves to trivialize the circumstances in which Aang used those powers, and there are incredibly far-reaching repercussions for anyone who has their bending taken away that no-one should ever be the soul executor of.

Saying that our gun ban was a mass violation of our rights - I'm pretty sure we don't have the right to bear arms written in our constitution. America is an outlier where just about any fuckwit can walk into a mall with a rifle strapped to their back.

I think the objectively worst take on Australia is that the country doesn't actually exist, and that all of its major cities and tourism points are staged in Guam. It should go without saying, but my country does exist, and also flat earthers are fucking morons.
