Specifically in the workplace, housing, and public accommodations. New York City has declared using the phrase illegal alien can be considered workplace harassment even if talking about illegal immigrants in general and not referring to any particular employees, if an employee becomes afraid from possible discrimination.

Go back to your country, threatening to call ICE, and other similar phrases could also constitute harassment even if the immigration status of an unlawful immigrant is not in dispute.

This really shouldn't be particularly objectionable. It's just spelling out something that most would already know to be true. You could already make a workplace harassment case off of such comments even without them being explicitly spelled out, this is simply a matter of making it clear to the dickwads who consider this acceptable conduct that it's not.

I haven't heard a real case of any outbreaks.

https://www.cdc.gov/measles/cases-outbreaks.html

From January 1 to September 26, 2019, 1,243** individual cases of measles have been confirmed in 31 states. This is an increase of two cases from the previous week.

This is the greatest number of cases reported in the U.S. since 1992. More than 75% of the cases this year are linked to outbreaks in New York. Measles is more likely to spread and cause outbreaks in U.S. communities where groups of people are unvaccinated.
The majority of cases are among people who were not vaccinated against measles.
Measles can cause serious complications. As of September 26, 2019, 131 of the people who got measles this year were hospitalized, and 65 reported having complications, including pneumonia and encephalitis.

Climate Change denialists aren't a problem. The problem is the people who understand Climate Change is a thing, but refuse to do anything about it since they're not going to be affected by it, and fighting it would diminish their wealth.

The thing is, the former vote for the latter (or at least for politicians bought out by the latter), giving the latter the power to keep making the problem worse while building themselves a bigger pile of money to stand on while the rest of the world ends up underwater. Case in point: Trump got elected on a platform of climate change denial and promptly gutted the EPA.

What if there was a way to help with symptoms? Wouldn't this be useful to a lot of people? Knowing causes is what helps find cures.

Yes, researching causes and treatment options are indeed good, helpful ideas. Clinging desperately to a single, falsified study suggesting autism is linked to the second-greatest advancement in public health in human history, however, is not researching causes and treatment options. It's bringing back diseases that are infinitely worse than autism could ever be.

How many people do you know with a disease other than cancer?

I personally have asthma, as do my sister, mother, and possibly girlfriend (undiagnosed, but symptomatic). My girlfriend has hypothyroidism and chronic headaches, as well as some tendonitis (there's room for debate as to whether that's a disease or an injury, but the distinction is largely academic). My mother has GERD.

And that's just chronic diseases, and just what I can come up with off the top of my head. It also doesn't include mental illnesses. If we start getting into acute diseases, then the list grows every time somebody I know catches a cold (and then shrinks again when they recover) or other such issue, which is very much not a rare occurrence. That is a terribly, terribly silly question for you to ask.

I like how you say "they like to fight in packs" when he had some other people join in, but when other people stand by you, that's just the normal way that things are supposed to work. This tells me a lot about your personal biases. I also like how you've completely changed your approach now that your prior argument has been made to look silly.

Honestly, when was the last time a Prime Minister did make Canada look good? I've met goldfish with better social skills than Harper, Martin was pretty unremarkable, the only thing I remember Chretien for was staying out of the Iraq war, Campbell lasted all of three months, and pretty much nobody liked Mulroney. That's the last 35 years accounted for.

Honestly, the PM doesn't matter all that much. The US' political system tends to cause Canadians to think a little too highly of the PM; in practice power in Canada is significantly more distributed throughout the party. Look at the parties and their platforms, not the people in charge of them.

I do actually agree that the push for vaccines being mandatory is a questionable infringement of medical autonomy, and I'd prefer it weren't coming to this. The fact of the matter, however, is that people are really friggin' stupid when it comes to vaccines, and the only way to keep that stupidity from bringing back a terrifying number of very serious diseases that had been all but eradicated (measles is already back) is to stop letting those stupid people decide for themselves (or at least keep them from sending their unvaccinated kids into public places, which is what the actual push is).

-Welcomes and provides asylum to tens of thousands of middle eastern refugees = not a racist dickbag

Going from being a racist dickbag to not being a racist dickbag = personal growth. This is extremely obvious to anyone that thinks about the matter for more than a quarter of a second. You should perhaps try it some time.

I'd say 2, though I haven't played Tales or 3 yet. There are some valid arguments to be made for the first one handling certain things better (namely world drop loot making it more likely that you'll come across decent legendaries playing normally instead of having to farm a given boss, with the downside that farming specific legendaries for a build becomes much harder), but I'd still say that 2 was overall a more enjoyable game to play. Pre-Sequel was fun, but never engaged me the way 2 did.

DLC is abused far more than people appreciate. It's accounted for in the earliest parts of the game's development. Management - not the director or the game's developers, but management - decides how much DLC will be made, when it will be released, and what it will cost. They make these decisions not based on the creative needs of the game or the desires of the team to add in additional content, but based on marketing and engagement studies in the hopes of retaining as many customers for as long as possible and milking as much money out of them as possible. It is, in a sense, understandable why they do this - resources need to be allocated, budgets need to be planned, timetables need to be worked out.

But... it's fundamentally dishonest. It's a way of selling an incomplete product, since you're basically asking your creative team, "Yeah, come up with a great idea we can sell later, but make sure not to include it in the basic product. Gotta have something to boost up those Q2 numbers!"

That's all well and good, but it doesn't actually matter. Even if a game is planned to have certain DLC long after launch, there's no reason that content has to be in the base game. I often cite Borderlands as being an example of DLC done well: all four DLC campaigns are standalone side stories that add on to the main game without being at all necessary. Given how distinct they are from the game's main story, there's a very easy case to be made that they shouldn't have been part of the base game. They're very much add-ons that complement the base game for people who want more. Was there a plan in place before the game launched to produce extra content to get a bit more revenue out of the game? Almost certainly. But that doesn't change that the base game was a complete product to which the DLC was added.

Quite simply, just because more stuff can be added post-launch doesn't mean a game is incomplete. As long as the base game is a complete product, I'm fine with buying DLC that seems like it's going to be worth the cost (such as the MK8 DLC that added 50% more tracks to the game for less than 20% of the game's retail price, when the game already had the number of tracks we've come to expect from MK games). If the base game isn't a complete product and the DLC is needed to fix that? That's not so okay and I don't buy into that nonsense.

The big issue with this philosophy is that the up-front cost of the objectionably monetized games tends to be a small fraction of the actual revenue they generate. When the company's got a handful of whales forking over tens of thousands of dollars apiece, they don't really care about my $60, or the $60 of most of their player base. Sales figures are still an important part of maintaining their image to investors, since it just looks bad if the newest game in a series sells a quarter of the units sold of the previous game, but that's becoming a smaller and smaller part of the bottom line.

That's not to say there isn't value in refusing to buy something that does shady stuff, but the impact is definitely not as substantial as it would be if that shady monetization weren't there.

darkknight109 posted...
No paid DLC, since I don't like having the game chopped up and sold back to me at a premium

DLC is the one monetization strategy that I do think has some value. Yes, it frequently gets abused, but there are plenty of examples of DLC that simply add more content to a game that's already perfectly enjoyable on its own, comparable to the expansion packs of yore. As long as it feels like it's adding something new and not just replacing what was removed, I'm fine with DLC.

There's a bit, but for the most part, games that are anti-consumer enough for me to consider boycotting them don't appeal to me in the first place. There's also no shortage of other games to play, so I'm fine with skipping the occasional one that I'd otherwise want to play.

Really, the only game that comes to mind that I'm skipping for now is Borderlands 3, which I won't be getting until it comes out on Steam because I really don't like the whole exclusive-buying thing Epic's doing in lieu of competing properly. Waiting works out there, though, because I don't trust 2K Games in the slightest and fully expect them to shoehorn some kind of microtransactions or other monetization scheme into the game post-launch to take advantage of how ripe for exploitation the BL series is. If that does happen, I figure it'll probably happen within the first few months, so by the time the Steam release and a decent sale roll around, it should be good.

UBI is the only way anything close to anarchocapitalism can ever be realized
Lolwut? It's damn near the complete opposite of that. UBI is like state centralized power giving an allowance to the peasantry (which would more than likely barely be enough to scrape by).

Thereby (mostly) eliminating the need to regulate employers. As it stands now, people's lives depend on being employed. Left to their own devices, employers can, do, and have exploited that, cutting corners on wages, safety, and overall working conditions because they know people will put up with such conditions when the alternative is starving in the streets. As such, regulations exist to protect employees from that exploitation, a paradigm which requires constant effort to keep those potections sufficient in a world of corporations desperately eager to erode them.

Under a UBI system, having a job is no longer a necessity of life. That means people can leave bad employers without fearing for their personal well-being, which means there no longer need to be laws preventing employers from being bad. It means minimum wage laws no longer need to exist, and businesses can actually pay people based purely on the revenue they generate. It means unpleasant and dangerous jobs actually have to pay well enough to compensate people for how unpleasant and dangerous they are (which, in turn, drives innovation because automating such jobs is a whole lot better than having to pay an arm and a leg to get anyone to do them). It means you end up with a genuinely free job market that is actually properly competitive at every level without having to be infinite. Jobs have to compete to be good enough to attract good workers, and workers compete for the best jobs without needing to settle for something terrible until they get them.

Quite simply, you can't have a free job market when one side of that market has unilateral power to threaten the lives of the other side. There's just too much of a power imbalance to call that free. Done properly, UBI takes that threat away and balances the power between employers and employees. That's the only way you're ever going to have a proper free market.

A lot of people say this without being able to answer the most important question one must answer if they want to defeat somebody's position: Are the things she's saying wrong?
Doesn't matter. She's telling the general public like it's our problem when it isnt. It's the corporations and they aren't going to stop what they're doing. She's effectively an "old man yelling at clouds."

But is our problem. It's the general public that's going to suffer the worst impacts of climate change, since the wealthy elite creating the problem will have the resources to adapt. Yes, it's the corporations that are directly responsible for the issue, but it falls to the general public to hold them accountable for that by being conscientious consumers and voting in a government that will regulate them. You're not going to stop corporations by yelling at them. You have to stop them by convincing the source of their power that they need to be stopped.

I'd have so much respect for her if she went to China and preached to their leaders and people about climate change
Haha like china would give someone a platform to do this

Yeah, her doing this in China would require an actual military invasion to escort her in and defend her while she spoke. That, or a massive cyber-infiltration so she could do it remotely.

I don't think what she did was a crime. As in I don't think it qualifies as criminal negligence or reckless.

She did something that had a high chance of resulting in somebody's death, a consequence which she could have reasonably predicted. Attributing to her some responsibility for that death is therefore reasonable.

SKARDAVNELNATE posted...
Nor is sending a text an offense.

Depends entirely what's in the text. "I am going to kill you" is a death threat. "I will offer you $300 to sleep with me tonight" is solicitation. "My company's about to lay off 400 people and you should sell some of their stock now" is insider trading. The mere act of texting isn't an offence, no, but you can absolutely use texts to communicate messages that constitute offences.

Sounds fair. I don't necessarily believe she's learned her lesson and become a better person for her time in jail, since anyone psychopathic enough to encourage somebody to commit suicide is going to have no qualms about putting on a friendly facade to manipulate a good behaviour system to their benefit, but it sounds like the system in question is being applied as intended, and I don't think it'd be a good idea to abolish said system just because she may or may not have abused it.

Ideally, you don't want to cut your caloric intake by more than 10% of your daily needs. Do more than that, and your body starts adjusting your metabolism such that your weight loss will slow or even reverse, and you risk damaging other tissues as your body converts them into fat stores. Cut back a little bit while maintaining your activity levels and ensuring you're getting a complete complement of nutrients (nutrient deficiencies will also mess with your metabolism), and you'll lose weight. Just don't expect instant results. This process takes time and requires long-term lifestyle changes, not just some sort of crash diet.

The word "better" is a comparative term. I'm going to give you a chance to read my post again and figure out who I'm comparing him to. That should allow you to answer your own question.

The school punishing them doesn't violate their first amendment rights, though. The school is a private entity that can have whatever rules about acceptable speech it wants. If they were to be jailed for it, then yeah, that'd be a violation, but as long as it's not the government silencing them, it's fair game.

State universities aren't private institutions, they have to follow government rules. If this was Harvard or something, then yea that would apply, but for Colorado State they are essentially run by the government and have to follow government rules.

Oh, okay.

That B&W Toys R Us ad shows the GB itself at $50. Wisconsins minimum wage was $4.25/hr. I was initially going to do a comparison of inflation but discovered that its still only at $7.25/hr. Its really only gone up three dollars in twenty-eight years?

Welcome to the reason Americans are clamouring for better minimum wages.

Spyro too even if you had to download 2 of them.

Why did they do that? The whole trilogy takes up 40 GB and dual layer Blu-Rays hold 50 GB.

Activision are greedy penny pinchers.

How did they save money by doing that?

Lets them use non-dual-layer discs, and more importantly, means burning the discs doesn't take as much time, allowing them to burn more with fewer machines running.

I can ASSURE you that if I made a directly insulting post that anyone with a brain would moderate, it would get moderated. Then let's say that our resident Marxists would make the very, same exact post, nothing would happen.

That's a very easy hypothesis to test. You have a ctrl key, you have a C key, and you have a V key. You're entirely capable of making the very, same exact post to demonstrate that it would be modded. Go for it.
