So a government agency has debunked a #fakenews story and you're not going to trust it because it contradicts the fake news? idk, sounds like you're the one attacking the facts with a sharpie now! And honestly, what's the claim here? That the president just decided to randomly do something of his own volition with no apparent motive? That's your alternative to him getting bad information from another agency?

So... rather than waiting for the NWS to make an actual statement to that effect (which would presumably include actual probabilities and other useful information), he took a sharpie to an existing map so he could prove he wasn't wrong? The biggest concern (outside of the general distrust of science and corporations and Monsanto's specific douchebaggery) is that nobody really knows what the long-term effects of any of these modifications could be. It certainly wouldn't be the first time that something people thought was safe (and was marketed as safe by the companies peddling it) turned out to be very harmful decades down the line (asbestos and tobacco are two very notorious examples of this). Conceptually, there's nothing wrong with the idea, but I can understand people being a bit wary of potential undiscovered side effects.

No. And I'll never eat bugs either.

Unless you've eaten anything with carmine dye (and I'm sure some other dyes use insects as well).

Carmine, cochineal extract, crimson lake, carmine lake, natural red 4, C.I. 75470, or E120 are all synonyms and are very, very common in food and cosmetics. It's an aluminum salt of an extract of a scale insect. It's used in many pink, red, and purple food products, particularly yogurt, candy, and juice.

Another commonly eaten insect product is lac, also known as shellac, pharmaceutical glaze, confectioner's glaze, or E904., which is used as a hard coating on pills and candy.

On a less insectual but equally icky note, many artificial flavourings and scents make use of castoreum, a substance extracted from the anal scent glands of beavers. Beaver butt juice is in a good chunk of processed food.

And, realistically, is a reasonable lower bound to use there, given that even people who are reading on a reasonably regular basis aren't likely to exceed that number by much. Given the results, going with 30+ and having a 21-30 option would probably have been more reasonable, since this poll question would be expected to have fewer people choosing the highest option if the response are structured properly, but they nonetheless have covered every possibility.

You're defending a president who would rather scare people and forge distrust in the US Weather Service than admit he made a mistake. You shouldn't want to do that.

his death wasn't really related to the assault seeing as he was on vacation with his family and they couldn't get him to the hospital in time

That he died because the medical needs arising from the assault weren't met doesn't change the fact that the assault ultimately killed him. If you were to shoot a man in the leg and he bled to death because the ambulance that would otherwise have saved his life took a wrong turn and didn't get there in time, you've still murdered that man. The fact that he would have survived with better medical care is irrelevant to that.

Personally, I think it would be appropriate for attempted murder charges to carry an automatic jail sentence that lasts until it is certain that the victim will survive. Beat a guy into a coma? You have no chance of getting out of jail until he wakes up. If he never wakes up? Then you've effectively murdered him and would deserve a life sentence anyway, so it works out. If he dies? You get upgraded to murder and get your time served credited to your life sentence. He wakes up a week later? You wait for your sentencing hearing to be scheduled.

There's potentially a case to be made that their time in jail reformed them, given that they got out early, and that they shouldn't go to jail for the murder because there's no further point, but charges should absolutely be laid. Let them make that defense in court.

Depends how well the game itself turns out. If they have to make a lot of compromises in terms of content to get the game working on a weaker platform, there'll still be a sizable market for better-quality MK games on consoles, particularly where it's one of the few major local multiplayer franchises left. There also likely will not be that much of a market for mobile sequels, so any further development on a full-game scale will likely result in a new console game instead of a mobile one.

Anytime they use the word critically injured it is a very very bad crash. Doctors rarely use the word critically to describe a patient, it is usually in a case where the patient has pretty high chance of possibly dying.

Whenever I hear critically, I think fatally =x And, in general, I'm not sure why I'm so much more shocked and unnerved than if the story was about another celeb, although maybe it's because I just associate "critical" with death rather than just the risk of death and now after that faded, I'm worried he might die.

Critically Is a blanket term for anything from broken bones to almost dead.

In the media, maybe, but not for doctors. If doctors describe somebody as being in critical condition, that should be interpreted as "they will die if we don't do something immediately, and still might die despite our best efforts." The phrase shows up more often than it ought to in media because it sounds very dramatic (though it doesn't actually show up anywhere in this article).

How do you propose they do that? Delete accounts? View every message before they get sent?

The best they could do would be to let victims report offenders and ban accounts accordingly, but with the number of dating sites out there and the relative ease of making spare accounts, that wouldn't end up doing all that much. That would also happen on a site by site basis, meaning most wouldn't want to take the revenue hit that would come with being the first one to do it (since offenders would just go to a competitor's site, so long as any existed that didn't crack down on it). Enforcing it at a legal level is a much more effective approach, since it's both a significant punishment and it would be applied to all sites.

Yep, which means exactly the opposite of how the saying is often misappropriated.

The opposite happens to be true for a lot of people though so thats probably why it got changed. Its unfortunately very normal. Friends start their own families and are too busy the older you get. I take it as your immediate family though like a husband/wife kids and perhaps your parents.

It's only ever brought up to try and guilt trip somebody into valuing their family over anyone else, despite having no actual weight beyond being a popular saying (well, and the fact that blood is literally thicker than water, but physics has little bearing on relationships). The fact that it actually means the opposite of that (that the relationships you cultivate are more meaningful than the ones you're born into) just makes using it even sillier.

I'd call coming out as gay an accomplishment, given the likelihood that you incur hardship by doing so. Less so for young people today, since the movement as a whole has accomplished a lot in that regard, but we're still very much not at a point where nobody has to fear coming out. The concept of being proud to be openly gay is valid, and since you can't really express pride in being gay without also being openly gay, the transitive property validates gay pride.

If by "take their faith seriously," you mean "rely on their faith for advice on how to live their life better," then that is a much more realistic expectation, but not one that allows you to assume that any given Muslim wants to orchestrate the downfall of Western society.

Quite simply, consider how many Muslims exist that aren't terrorists, and practice a more moderate interpretation of Islam. Even if you are going to make assumptions about people instead of getting to know them first, the odds are not in favour of assuming that Muslims are terrorists.

Because it was discriminatory for me to decide not to cut up a peach and put it on my cereal this morning. Logically speaking, discrimination is such a broad concept that the term is virtually meaningless without context, and if somebody needs to be told their discrimination is wrong, context is unable to provide them with that meaning. That makes it exceedingly easy to handwave away. Being unable to explain why religious discrimination isn't functionally identical to racism, however, is a much harder position to be in. I like making the bastards squirm. As I said earlier, it's also a decent test for identifying whether or not a person actually understands why racism is bad.

You're arguing with me excessively verbosely so you have no grounds to argue expedience.

Persuasive arguing is a time for expanding. I'm not going to sacrifice clarity for expedience here, because the whole reason I'm making this argument is to explain it in detail. That would defeat the purpose.

This is why it's necessary to control the influx of immigrants.

Oh, sure. Completely open borders are generally pretty impractical. The argument, however, then becomes "too many people are coming in uncontrolled and we need to limit that" not "people are coming in illegally and we need to stop that." The attitude from many is that even one illegal immigrant is too many, when the fact that the US has continued to function just fine despite having a whole lot more than that for its entire existence demonstrates that that is not remotely the case. Ergo, there's not much grounds for the massive crackdown on illegal immigration that the "build the wall" crowd wants.

What was really bad was trying to go between playing MH3U on the WiiU and Dark Souls with a 360 controller. I had to give up on that idea and focus on one game at a time. Having B be the dodge button for both games but be in different places on each controller was impossible to keep track of.

Actually, it's not difficult at all. The adults who don't even play games sit at a table and decide rules. Then they let the kids play the games. And when one does something they deem a glitch, *buzzer* you're out.

See, reality is > than mental gymnastics. They force you into shutting up and stop you from turning things into a philosophical debate. And after they're done, they pay themselves with the money you and your friends used to buy tickets to the event with.

Cold hard reality. Enforced by might and violence. Makes you mad, huh? You aren't gonna change it by thinking your way out of it.

You're really weird.

The best part was rogue squadron on the GameCube with the secret Naboo ship that nobody knew about till after the movies came out.

That shit was amazing

i miss the fuck out of that game.

i think you mean the one on the N64 though, unless the gamecube game had the same thing.

Did the n64 one have the Naboo ship? Am I remembering it wrong?

If so, thats badass for the n64.

Rogue Squadron 2 was on the GC, and I believe that was the one with the Naboo ship. The Rogue Squadron on the N64 came out before Episode 1, in a world without patches, so I don't think it was in there. It was the N64 that had the awesome podracing game, though.

I enjoyed it well enough in theatres, but stopping afterwards to think about any of it has invariably led to the conclusion that none of it was really very good, particularly the fact that the overarching plot hasn't moved at all (they started the movie trying to escape from a planet with the First Order bearing down on them, and they finished the movie trying to escape from a different planet with the First Order bearing down on them and a couple side characters dead). It was thoroughly meh.

Coming out of TFA I couldn't wait for the next movie, to see Luke kick the shit out of the dark side on a scale like how Vader does it at the end of Rogue One.

You mean, when Vader was pretty much closer to his prime instead of being an old man that cut himself off from the force?

BTW, that Vader scene in RO is the best scene in any Star Wars movie.

It really is. As much as some people don't like Rogue One for the lack of character development, from the "cool space adventures and battles" angle, I genuinely feel it's one of the best movies in the series. But I can see how people that like Star Wars for the characters would have been less enthused about it, since they all sucked and then died.

I don't need to know their reasons to know that MAGA is hollow, meaningless pathos and that anyone who doesn't see that isn't doing too much actual thinking on the matter.

Yeah, pretty much. Everyone engaging in such practices deserves the same criticism. Trump's doing them very publicly, therefore he's drawing more criticism.

By definition, a person must have no reason or experience, and knowing a person's highest authority does not like you is a good reason to not like them.

If you pre-emptively judge the role their religion plays in their life, sure. But then that's prejudice. Whee!

It's functionally identical, don't fixate on irrelevant trivialities. The salient point is the prejudicial discrimination, not the specific personal characteristic upon which it's based.

Your "point" is to use an emotionally evocative word to slander your opponent to deliver social harm.

No, my point is that typing six characters/saying three syllables is substantially more efficient than typing 51 characters/saying 17 syllables (in the case of religion; "culture" is fewer, "ethnicity" is more) to communicate a functionally identical point.

It's not prejudicial to say Islam is, as a general rule, against western society.

It is prejudicial, however, to use that as a basis to discriminate against Muslims. By definition.

You probably shouldn't use words that aren't even slightly accurate.

I consider "functionally identical" to qualify as more than slightly accurate, especially in the absence of a succinct term that would be more optimally specific. Anyone who doesn't understand the point being made despite the suboptimal word choice doesn't actually understand why racism is bad in the first place.

No I don't. I have a perfectly healthy obsession with writing off whataboutism as whataboutism. I call it "acknowledging empirical reality," and it's a major part of how I live my life. By definition, if you respond to "X is bad!" with "this other guy did X," without doing anything to address the actual point of X being bad, that's whataboutism. If you think X is fine, defend X. If you agree that X is bad, don't treat it as a chance to take shots at some other guy who did X in the past, treat it as a chance to agree and do whatever you can to stop X. That you struggle with this concept is the unhealthy obsession with whataboutism to which I was referring.

If both parties agree on something, it's intellectually and morally disingenuous to put the onus on one party simply because you dislike that party.

It really rather baffles me how many people think "____ isn't a race so this isn't racism!" actually addresses the point being made. If the broadened use of the term bothers you that much, just mentally replace the word "racism" with "prejudicial discrimination on the basis of religion/culture/ethnicity" and carry on with your life.
