Lesbian lingerie saleswomen would have to balance their sexual attraction to customers with their professional duty. This constitutes a conflict of interest.

Of course, even if they are a protected class, there's nothing stopping a lingerie sales job from specifically excluding lesbians because they can demonstrate that the job does actually require a straight woman (by the same vein, that job wouldn't hire a straight guy, which is fine despite gender being a protected class). If it's a requirement that's inherent to the job, discrimination is perfectly fair game.

If protected classes are going to exist (which they probably should, in the interest of keeping certain groups from being less employable for no reason), then LGBT should be one of them. The only potential objection is a religious one, and it's not the law's job to enforce the whims of any one religion.

The people starving now are starving not because there isn't enough food in the world for them, but because the food that is in the world isn't reaching them. With better organization, there's no reason the world couldn't support significantly more people, especially once we start developing vertical farming technologies (e.g. hydroponics, aeroponics) and viable lab meat.

Hypothetically, the entire population of the world could fit into Texas, with a population density about 5-10% higher than that of Manhattan (if I'm remembering the math I did a while ago correctly). Having such a high population density over such a large area creates some logistical challenges that you don't see when it's a much smaller area, of course, meaning living in such a megalopolis would be very different from living in Manhattan, but it wouldn't be impossible.

Because the benefits vastly outweigh the minor consequences and, more importantly, it's a safer and more efficient method than using tanker trucks. The oil is being transported no matter what, you're just choosing the delivery method.

The difference being that pipelines are a long-term investment and commitment to expanding fossil fuel usage, which is the opposite of what we should be doing if we're actually going to do something about climate change. Trucks? Hitch up a different trailer and start hauling something else. You've got no infrastructure investment there to worry about. Trains (which are actually safer and more efficient than pipelines, provided the infrastructure is appropriately maintained to avoid another Lac Megantic)? You can use an expanded rail infrastructure to transport just about anything, cutting down on the amount of long-distance truck transport needed in the future (which is pretty overwhelmingly a good thing, given how hard trucks are on roads). Pipelines? They're good for oil. That's it.

Yes, pipelines are better than trucks, but only if you look at immediate, short-term usefulness. Provided future fossil fuel usage is reduced by as much as it really needs to be, pipelines are not a good investment.

When that became a moddable offense, the user hypnox offered up his username as a replacement, and that's stuck around ever since.

A belief which is stupid and flagrantly at odds with basic statistics and risk analysis. Vaccine complications account for vastly fewer deaths and injuries than these diseases did prior to vaccination. Are they perfectly safe? Of course not. Nothing is. Are they safer than being unvaccinated? Objectively so.

The medical and scientific communities have done a lot to sow distrust, so I can sympathize with people being skeptical of them, but skepticism doesn't mean refusing to accept basic empirical reality. Vaccines are the second-greatest advancement in public health in human history. Discarding all of that observable good because you're worried about a couple one-in-a-million side effects or want to cling to one study that was never good science even before it was retracted for being fraudulent is a ****ing terrible idea. Be skeptical, certainly, but not unhealthily so.

Most trails I know of that allow cyclists are wide enough for cyclists to pass single pedestrians pretty comfortably (hence cyclists are allowed), and explicitly say that everybody should keep to the right of the trail and pass on the left, using a bell if on a bike. I'm not sure if they explicitly dictate right of way between cyclists and pedestrians, but I do know that they put horses ahead of everybody and ATV's behind everybody, which just makes sense. I've never particularly had problems biking or hiking on those trails, provided I maintain some situational awareness and don't take up more than half the trail when a bike's coming up from behind, so it seems to work well enough.

Softly tapping only "deters" a tailgater if it causes them to react as though you slammed on your brakes, which means they're braking hard and can potentially cause an accident. If they're tailgating you in the first place, they're not going to care that you're showing them your brake lights work. They're only going to back off if they think they need to slow down dramatically to avoid hitting you.

Mad_Max posted...
Softly tapping to deter a tailgater is not fine, and is dumb.

It can be hard to swallow your pride and "admit defeat" letting some asshole tailgater pass you, but that's the safest thing to do. Move over, let the tailgater pass, and be on your way.

Gradually slowing down is one of the better ways to deal with tailgaters. One of three things will happen:

-They'll get fed up and pass you when possible
-They'll take the hint and stop crowding you if they can't pass
-If they continue tailgating you, going slower means you'll have more time to react to anything that happens and therefore reduce the likelihood of needing to stop suddenly enough to be rear-ended

Sure, it sucks that you have to be slowed down by some idiot that doesn't know how to drive, but it's the safest option.

But it did protect from banning words. Until now, at least in New York City it doesnt.

Intent is required for harassment. Using a word you dont like doesnt itself prove intent, especially when that word is the definition of an object. That object being an immigrant who has entered the country unlawfully.

This is literally just saying "for those of you who haven't figured it out yet, telling coworkers to go back to their own country is generally going to constitute harassment." It's fascinating that someone in this day and age knows how bad McDonald's is for you. Right?

What about if you eat it in moderation?

Like only three India Pale Macs a day?

Specifically in the workplace, housing, and public accommodations. New York City has declared using the phrase illegal alien can be considered workplace harassment even if talking about illegal immigrants in general and not referring to any particular employees, if an employee becomes afraid from possible discrimination.

Go back to your country, threatening to call ICE, and other similar phrases could also constitute harassment even if the immigration status of an unlawful immigrant is not in dispute.

This really shouldn't be particularly objectionable. It's just spelling out something that most would already know to be true. You could already make a workplace harassment case off of such comments even without them being explicitly spelled out, this is simply a matter of making it clear to the dickwads who consider this acceptable conduct that it's not.

If Im at work and I see a news report about Trump finally building his wall and I say something like Yeah, no more illegal aliens coming in that way I should not be guilty of a crime just because my coworker broke the law when entering the country.

If you're doing anything to make your workplace uncomfortable for your coworkers, then yes, you absolutely should be guilty of a crime (or misdemeanour or whatever workplace harassment qualifies as because I can't be bothered to look it up). That's what workplace harassment is.

Now, in all likelihood, talking about illegal immigration in an empirical, third-person manner like that isn't likely to make anyone feel harassed enough to file a harassment complaint. You would therefore probably be fine in the example you gave (well, aside from that being a pretty contrived, awkward sentence, but that's beside the point). Understanding whether or not you're committing some form of harassment requires you to understand your audience, so if you're cognizant of how your audience feels, you probably won't have a problem.

I'd like to see your sources.

On what, vaccines not being linked to autism? You're not going to find a source proving a negative, because that's just how logic works. A source on the single "vaccines=autism" study being falsified? Gladly:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3136032/

The abstract covers the whole saga. TL;DR version: Wakefield published a study in 1998 suggesting the MMR vaccine was linked to autism, a study which people took seriously despite it being garbage science (n=12). Subsequent not-garbage science showed that supposed link to be nonsense as well as a financial conflict of interest, and the paper was retracted. A second retraction occurred in 2010 when it was revealed that the paper misrepresented his experimental findings and contained some data that he knew to be incorrect. And then the final nail in the coffin was a journalistic investigation that uncovered that he was guilty of deliberate fraud and had knowingly falsified data, presumably for financial gain. This final revelation cost him his medical license and should - in my opinion - qualify him for thousands of second-degree murder charges because of the movement he sparked.

A single, falsified study is the basis for most of the anti-vaxx movement. QED, wench.

There are studies proving the link between illness and neurodegeneration and heavy metal toxicity.

Duh. There's no question that mercury and whatnot are neurotoxic. As with any toxicity, however, dosage must be considered, as must the form the toxic elements take (e.g. Chlorine gas is highly toxic, yet chloride ions are essential for our bodies' function). If you want to suggest that vaccines are responsible for neurodegeneration and heavy metal toxicity, you need to show that vaccines contain neurotoxic doses of those heavy metals, as well as that the metals are present in a form that would cause such toxicity.

Also, if a person contracts a disease, why do you care? You're protected right?

Vaccines are not 100% effective. I've had pertussis, despite being vaccinated beforehand. I can probably thank that vaccine that I'm still alive to tell you about it, because that was a pretty nasty bug. In addition to lessening the severity of any infections one does end up with, vaccines increase the pathogen load that's required to overcome your existing immunity and end up with an infection. There's a world of difference between the pathogen load you're exposed to in the environment and the pathogen load you're exposed to when somebody with measles sits next to you. Vaccines can generally handle the former, but the latter is much harder. This is why the polio vaccine we give now is substantially weaker than the one that was originally given: you don't need as strong a vaccine when you aren't dealing with people with polio on a daily basis.

Additionally, there are people who actually cannot be vaccinated, usually due to an allergy or some form of immunocompromise. Those people have to rely on herd immunity, which is the simple fact that you're unlikely to get infected by a disease if most of the people around you are immune (I believe the threshold is 90-95%ish). Those people become vulnerable if the vaccination rate drops below the herd immunity threshold, which is bad. There's also the fact that the unvaccinated people getting these diseases generally didn't make the non-vaccination decision themselves, so there's an element of wanting to protect them from their idiot parents. Just basic compassion, really.
