I feel like people put way too much thought into those movies/books they were obviously written as light fantasy fluff and aren't supposed to be looked at nearly so deeply

But there is incredibly deep lore and backstory.

Most of which was written after the main story, or at least in parallel with later books. A lot of extra worldbuilding and whatnot has happened, yes, but it wasn't written at the time of the first book, which results in a lot of things that end up being pretty shallow and poorly-explained. That's not overly surprising, really; I don't think anyone was expecting it to become popular enough for people to want the universe expanded.

No, implying that hijackings prevent the event from proceeding as intended. Same as a dictionary would imply.

Oh so if Roger Federer decided to start openly playing with himself between sets that wouldn't be wrong as it wouldn't have any impact if you weren't butthurt over it?

That'd be good old-fashioned public indecency, and objectionable on those grounds. It would not, however, be objectionable on the grounds of "hijacking the match," provided it happened entirely between sets and did not delay them (though in practice, it likely would due to immediate police involvement).

Defying rules is not in and of itself harmful. Rules are typically put in place to prevent the harm that can arise from not following them, but if you want to cite some harm that has occurred, you're going to have to do better than "rules were broken."

Kyuubi4269 posted...
By your logic if he put up an ISIS flag and burnt his own US flag but put it all away when the anthem ended and went back to play, that would be fine.

Yes, actually. That'd be very solid grounds for investigating him for terror connections, and those implications would likely cause enough of a panic to disrupt the game (akin to yelling "fire" in a crowded theatre, which is a crime), so in practice that particular example would not play out non-disruptively, but hypothetically, it doesn't really matter what he does, so long as the game can proceed as scheduled.

Not really. Some police are corrupt, and there are certainly issues with racial and other biases and a growing trend of unnecessary force, but that's hardly grounds for calling all American police "horribly corrupt." That's usually reserved for places where organized crime effectively owns the police force and can therefore do whatever they want with impunity.

VioletZer0 posted...
So what exactly are we supposed to DO to protect ourselves?

Engage police in meaningful dialogues about biases, work with them (community de-escalation programs, etc.) to reduce violent crime, vote/campaign for municipal politicians that plan to employ larger-scale programs to make such things happen, and for state/federal politicians that will end the for-profit prison system and war on drugs... Really, the fact that "I can't shoot them if they do something I don't like!" is your first thought here is pretty alarming. There are ample avenues for peacefully effecting change. Pretty much. Rewriting a scene in a text-only game? An hour or two of writing and ten minutes to copy it into the code (and that's only for a major rewrite). Rewriting a scene in a game with VA? An hour or two of writing, then however long it takes to pin down the voice actors for several hours of recording each, then a few hours of editing, then several days of work to reanimate the scene (possibly needing to get some time with mocap actors) and get the lip syncing right, then some unknown amount of time to get the audio decompression working right to have the lines played at the appropriate time in game.

It's substantially more time (and therefore money) and substantially more people (and therefore money), which strongly promotes keeping stories simpler so rewrites won't be necessary.

Revelation34 posted...
I don't see how that is saying it isn't taking a life. I'm just pointing out using loaded words like "baby" or "child" is wrong.

The fact that you're calling them "loaded words" illustrates that specifying that they're fetuses creates distance between that state and what they will become. The only difference between a fetus and an infant is time. It's important to make the distinction in a medical context, for obvious reasons, but for laypeople, using "kid" as an informal blanket term and relying on context to indicate that it's an unborn child doesn't actually take away any important semantic information. Steering clear of such colloquialisms doesn't deny that abortion is taking a life, but it is pretty flagrantly trying to avoid the discomfort of talking about killing kids.

Basically, I don't feel that "technically it's not a baby yet" is a good response to "you're killing babies!" You don't shut down a guilt trip by pointing out that they got their terminology wrong, you shut it down by facing exactly what they're saying and not feeling guilty about it.

Not every fetus makes it to birth. You're also using wrong terms like child. A fetus can't be a child by definition.

I'm actually not fond of making that distinction, despite being pro-choice. It always feels to me like it's trying to downplay the gravity of the situation. As pro-choice as I am, I do recognize that abortion entails taking a human life. Any effort to say it doesn't strikes me as arbitrarily drawing the line for "human life" where it's most convenient/comfortable, and I don't like that at all. I just also recognize that sometimes taking a life is the lesser of two evils, and provided the choice is made with the appropriate seriousness (and it usually is, as much as pro-lifers like to bring up fringe cases of women who have abortions for fun), I'm not going to tell anyone they can't make it.

Not the least of which is because one is dying of ailments and unlikely to survive

Likelihood of surviving is only one factor that's considered in deciding to take somebody off of life support. The other is the quality of life that can be expected if they do survive. Most of the time, if somebody's put on life support, it's to keep them alive until they can recover from whatever's endangering their life. They're only taken off when either that lifesaving effort is guaranteed to be futile, or more commonly, because they're never going to wake up with a decent life (vegetative state, profound cognitive impairment, etc.).

iCurious posted...
the other is a developing life being denied very good odds of reaching self sufficiency in a virtually guaranteed time frame.

Self-sufficiency in the sense of being able to live in the outside world? Sure. Self-sufficiency in the sense of being able to live without relying on others? That's never really guaranteed. Even after being carried to term, a child is going to be dependent on its parents for a good many years, meaning their quality of life is only going to be as good as what those parents can provide.

produced by humans

If humans produce it, it's artificial. Is that an exceedingly narrow and pedantic interpretation of the term? Absolutely, which is why I prefaced that with "if you want to be really pedantic [...]". But it does illustrate how silly it is to use the line between natural and artificial as a basis for anything meaningful. On the flip side, most things we readily consider artificial are made possible through processes that could be considered natural, like muscle movement and brain activity. What you were saying wasn't a real example of the naturalistic fallacy, but it was relying on a similar perceived dichotomy between natural and artificial things that just isn't there. It's a very arbitrary line, and so shouldn't be used for anything as significant as a literal matter of life and death.

iCurious posted...

You're making a very fundamental mistake in your understanding of my position. I am not in any way saying that every baby should be aborted because this world sucks so much. I'm saying that people who feel that they won't be able to give a baby a decent quality of life should be able to abort it. It should be a choice, made by each family (or would-be family) based on their own situation.

In the (very common) absence of a formal DNR order or similar advance directive, loved ones and doctors have to make decisions about whether or not to prolong life support, decisions which are based largely on what sort of quality of life can be expected if the person is given a chance to recover. The way I see it, abortion's no different from that, except for not being able to make personal considerations based on what you know about the person's values (since they don't have any yet).

You seem logical enough to spot a difference here.

The natural/artificial distinction doesn't mean a whole lot. Heck, if you want to be really pedantic, human reproduction is already technically artificial, since the only criterion necessary for calling an object or process artificial is that humans make/perform it. The only salient difference is that you can't take prior wishes into account when determining what sort of life the person in question would rather miss out on than survive to see.

They're both idiots who don't understand the importance of communication when navigating relationship difficulties.

Overlooking the tone-deaf (if not borderline racist) reference to them as Indian reservations

Steering away from "Indian" is largely a push from white people who want to avoid looking stupid for calling them the wrong thing. Most actual natives are quite fine with being called Indians. Ideally, use their actual tribe instead of a blanket term, since that's what their actual ethnic identity is, but as far as referring to indigenous folks as a whole, "Indian" is pretty acceptable.

Supposed journalism and it's talking about the patriarchy...

How can you not talk about a patriarchy when a bunch of old men are telling women what they can't do with their bodies?

What new items/weapons get unlocked with subsequent playthroughs?

Depends how you choose to build yourself the second time around, as well as the question of what you end up finding (especially if you go in blind). There's no meaningful difference between unlocking a weapon and using a different build that allows you to actually use it. It also does take a minimum of 3 playthroughs on one character to unlock all of the weapons/armour in the first Dark Souls (the Soul of Sif can be used for three different items, and you only get one per playthrough). Plus everything you get from the Soul of Gwyn.

Really, there are lots of examples. You'd remember this if your tastes were good enough to enjoy replaying Dark Souls.

People died in every war so that blowhards like Cadet Bone Spurs can say stupid things without getting arrested (or thrown into one of those third world sh...les that Trump despises so badly).

Eh, for the most part, American soldiers haven't died defending America. America's interests in other countries? Certainly, but not a whole lot of actual defense of America. The whole "they died for our freedoms" thing is pretty exaggerated.

I really wish "ancient gamer" included something that came out before I graduated high school. I get that I'm old and all, and that that's pretty exaggerated, but it's still really twisting the knife.
