There really isn't any reason to believe sexual preferences can't change over time. Pedantically, that suggests that one is really just bisexual, but the whole Kinsey Scale thing suggests that very few people are truly exclusively straight/gay anyway. Even without getting into that, though, one can consider one's own sexual preferences. Are you attracted to the same things as you were when you were a teenager? It's not unusual to answer that question negatively, and is going from being a boob man to a butt man really that different from going from a vag man to a dick man?

Please post this license agreement that apparently can be found in all physical releases for any Atari 2600, 5200, 7800, NES, SMS, SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, TG-16, Saturn, PS, N64, etc. game that you are referring to.

http://www.sega.com/EULA
https://www.take2games.com/eula/

Two examples, both opening with a clear "this is licensed, not sold." It's mostly modern games that make such claims, since the mechanisms by which the publishers can do anything about them are relatively new. Now, are those enforceable? That's another question, especially where they tend to be hidden behind the point of sale or otherwise not made clear to the customer before the publisher already has your money. That makes it hard to actually paint it as being a legitimate contract, meaning it probably wouldn't hold up in court, but that's still what the publishers push for.

Dr_Kain posted...
No they can't. Even if they could, if you disconnect your machine from the internet, problem solved.

Which wouldn't revert any patches that were downloaded to your system to lock you out of playing the game, plus it would prevent you from ever taking advantage of any features that require an Internet connection, including patches, downloadable content, and multiplayer. It'd work, provided you saw the license revocation coming, but you'd be pretty limited.

It's definitely a "choice" in that your environment decides it for the most part, not your genetics. There are various studies that show a link between childhood molestation and homosexuality in both lesbian and gay couples.

It's also worth pointing out that academic research like this is *highly* liberal, so there's not a lot of research being done that would suggest the contrary to what I'm saying.

That's cute that you think that. And it's cute that you think a license agreement means anything more than the screen it is written on. If I paid for it, I own it. It's as simple as that.

The only difference with physical copies is that it's practically much harder to revoke your license, though these days online connectivity gives publishers an avenue to do so pretty easily. Legally? They can do so pretty much any time they want, same as digital.

No one chooses to be persecuted, but that doesn't mean sexuality is not a choice.

They don't choose to be persecuted, since that decision falls on the persecutors, but they can choose to do something that they know will result in being persecuted. If avoiding homophobic attacks were as simple as choosing not to be homosexually attracted to anyone, why would anyone be gay?

It is a pitying argument. Oh who would CHOOSE such a horrible fate as to be gay? I mean, maybe people who are gay dont see their sexual orientation as this resentful curse. Just a thought. The persecution says more about the person doing it than it does about them. This also defines all those who engage in gay sex acts to be cowards if only given the opportunity.

And that's why the whole "it is/is not a choice" thing is pretty dumb, since saying "you can't hate them because they don't have a choice" carries the implication that it'd be okay to hate them if it were a choice. it really doesn't matter if it's a choice or not. Hating people for reasons that don't affect you in the slightest is just bad in general.

If that were even remotely true, publishers would never have even tried charging for them, let alone built a wildly successful business model off of doing so. People enjoy cosmetic customization, especially in multiplayer games where other people are going to see how you made you avatar look visually distinctive. The way the game looks is part of what makes the game enjoyable, and no amount of "it's just cosmetic" is going to change that.
