I try to give the guy the benefit of the doubt and he insists on taking the benefit and wiping his ass with it every single time. I don't agree with the kneeling but they have every right to do it and the employer has every right to punish them for it if they want. But to say that they should leave the country simply for not standing for the anthem is ridiculous. Especially coming from President Bone Spurs.

Ironically, the "logic" he is espousing means the 13 colonies never should've rebelled either. They should've been happy to pay taxes and have no representation.

Except no. And it's not entirely inappropriate to suggest that people who disrespect the symbol of a nation -- and by extension the nation -- should, if they so hate things here, leave.

But for reference, an actual fascist thing to say would be telling cops to round up anybody who doesn't stand during the anthem so they could be sent to a labor camp.

And remind me, because I seem to have forgotten: which years did you serve? A generation that's never been compelled to serve is talking tough about a man who was excused from service from a war that they weren't called to fight and, in all likelihood, would have run for the border if they had been.

Not even close to being the same thing. It's like saying a computer is sort of a car because both have mechanical parts. A lot of other things have mechanical parts or, in this case, nationalism. Also patriotism and nationalism is a somewhat clumsy fit.

People died in every war so that blowhards like Cadet Bone Spurs can say stupid things without getting arrested (or thrown into one of those third world sh...les that Trump despises so badly). That's what Memorial Day's all about, people dying so that people are free to live the way they want and say crap they want without getting arrested or executed or tried as 'enemies of the state'. If Cadet Bone Spurs doesn't like the idea of NFL players exercising their right of free speech, maybe him and his supporters should go to another country (I hear they have space in Antarctica).

The thing is that U.S. citizens have never been protected from exercising their right to free speech in private settings like in a workplace. Unless of course there is a situation where some players are allowed to use their position as a platform because of their ethnic origin but not others.

Eh, for the most part, American soldiers haven't died defending America. America's interests in other countries? Certainly, but not a whole lot of actual defense of America. The whole "they died for our freedoms" thing is pretty exaggerated.

And? What does this prove? You've already pointed out the obvious logical flaw in your argument, which is that no American under the age of 50 (i.e. nearly everyone on this site) would have ever been faced with the draft, making it a moot point to try and call people out on.

Trump, on the other hand, was around for those years and was called to serve. And he ducked and ran like a coward (and his "bone spurs" excuse rings a bit hollow given that he was apparently fit enough to play football in college). Now that's not, in and of itself, an indefensible thing - plenty of people did the same thing (including Dick Cheney, Bill Clinton, Newt Gingrich, George W. Bush [sort of], and Mitt Romney). But it does make his call to nationalism ring more than a little bit hollow, given his own shirking of national duty (one which, I might point out, had much more riding on it than a decision to stand or kneel for the national anthem).

NEWSFLASH: You dont need to have served to have an opinion, especially about a draft-dodger who talks shit the way he does. You also can have not served and still respect and honor soldiers and dislike pretty much every conservative ideal. Doesnt invalidate anyones opinion. Likely none of us are draft-dodgers because there hasnt been a draft in our lifetimes. Dont correct me if Im wrong about that last part because I dont care if there are like 1-2 Boomers on this site. The point still stands.

This. Ive designed a half dozen Veterans Memorials and every time theres some verse about people dying for our freedoms or protecting our borders. But the people putting these things up were in Vietnam or Korea - other nations Civil Wars that we decided to get involved in because communism is this super big bad evil style of government that we have to stop because...? And dont get me started on how we won WWII - that was the Russians that did that.

The suggestion that if someone doesn't like it here, maybe they should leave isn't fascism either. If they were rounded up and kicked out for it, that would be fascism.

Also - participation in the Anthem isn't mandatory. You can choose to remain off the field for the anthem.

It would be fascism if they arrested a player who didn't stand.

It doesn't even matter. The point isn't just Trump's dad buying him a ticket out of the war. If that was where it began and ended nobody would be criticizing him for it. It's the fact he expects others to do what he was afraid to and the whole badmouthing of POWs.

To respond to Zeus's stupid "what years" comment, mine is simple: I'm not medically fit because of asthma and very flat feet (a bipolar 1 disorder was later added). I filled out an application though. I feel personal shame about this, despite it being out of my control, because practically every male in my family has military service. I find Trump's hypocrisy on this matter insulting to my family's service (though not American) and any other soldiers anywhere else and consider him and those like him pieces of shit.

Yes, the Vietnam war was stupid. I don't blame people for not wanting to partake, but don't attack those who had the balls to make a sacrifice.

People love comparing Trump to Hitler, but they really differ greatly in the sense that Hitler had to convince the military to even take him. Totally opposite there. He didn't get a sick note from a doctor his father bribed so he could avoid the war.
