Yeah, but it's one of those 'there's only one person that really runs it' things, and there's also the fact that it's not a true 100% category anymore because of the loss of online functionality which also fucked with it a bit

That's unfortunate if that's the case. There's so many possibilities that if they focused on doing something unique each year rather than trying to one-up themselves, it would continue to be one of the most fascinating parts of the marathon.

People only want them to one-up themselves though, and there's only so many variations on the "programming stuff into the game" theme that they could reasonably do.

Actually, one thing I'm not sure how they'll do logistically is separating the runners so that they don't know what each other is doing and don't hear any commentary. I'm pretty sure LttPR is like Z1R and Z2R in that screenwatching is strictly disallowed?

Yes,a rom is randomized based on a specific seed and is distributed so they are all doing the same instance.

And typically for something big like this a neutral non racing player will hop into the randomized rom first just to make sure its not like worst possible rng. But none of the racers would be given any information from that.

I'm actually the one who vetted the Necrodancer seed at SGDQ '16 and I can confirm that's how it works

Maybe it's because AA4 Phoenix never actually does any lawyering, but he just seems so unflappable in AA4, whereas in the later games he's back to being decidedly flappable.

He's almost always the viewpoint character in DD and SoJ when he's around though, with 6-5 being the only seriously big exception. And I definitely don't remember any AA4 Phoenix on display there.

Well, they clearly wanted the old Phoenix back, but I don't know if you can have him being the chessmaster when he's the viewpoint character.

I just mean in the sense that like, I think a lot of Phoenix's snarky inner monologue in AA1-3 is just on full display as an outer part of his character in AA4, and I like that about him

Eh, the MASON System shows the old Phoenix is still in there. I just don't know why he decided to put on this raging apathy front in AJ because he's not actually apathetic.

I mean I do agree that he jerks Apollo's chain way more than necessary in AA4 for no reason, but I like the way he's mellowed out. I really don't think he's comes across as apathetic, that seems like something he's doing as a joke really, it's clear he cares as much as he always did I think, he's just not concerned with showing it.

It's a little bit hard to reconcile AA4 Phoenix with post-AA4 Phoenix sometimes, but oh well.

I think generally speaking we do agree that AA4 Phoenix is great, it's just that the circumstances behind him are stupid

Phoenix: "I knew you had what it took."
Apollo: "Mr. Wright! You believed in me?"
Phoenix: "Not really. I just thought that'd make a cooler entrance than, say, "hiya!""

these two are so great

AA4 really has a problem with defendants and not getting to talk to them, but I really like the way they handle Machi here. In 4-2 defending Wocky feels kind of dumb because it feels like Apollo has no attachment to the case but in 4-3 he is totally invested

After a failed present against Machi/Lamiroir:

"Machi says, 'Try again, adhesive.' No, no, sorry. "Try again, sucker."

Also when you fail the perceive on him, Klavier says something about Apollo not having any intelligence behind his wide forehead, and Machi laughs out loud when Lamiroir interprets it for him

I am seriously finding a new love for Machi in this case right now, he's kind of great

True, but December 15th-21st and December 27th-30th are much more common compared to Christmas Day. I speculated this is because of people attempting to aim for a Christmas Day birth and simply overshooting or undershooting Christmas Day when the actual birth happens.

If this was what was happening then Christmas wouldn't be a deadzone, there'd still be people born on that day.

What's REALLY happening is that people are NOT shooting for Christmas and inducing labor earlier or later than it in intentionally to avoid it.

I've been starting to think recently that Apollo and Blackquill are actually my favorite characters in the series, not Phoenix and Edgeworth

It's really boring to follow a plan in a Pokemon speedrun but it's pretty interesting when you need to piece one together on the fly

10,000% this. For a game like Pokemon there is legitimately more "skill" involved with randomisers. Its not the kind of game where the inputs are difficult and so with a static route there is not much beyond rote memorization of a single set of steps. With Pokemon randomisers you have to understand a lot more of the games mechanics and be able to apply that as you go in scenarios that could flip the script on you.

But Im telling you para. Lets do bi weekly races or something and submit next year. Im not good at speed running much, but Pokemon randomisers i can do.

Sure, let's get back on schedule. I submitted it this year but it didn't work out - I'm hoping to do it again every GDQ from here on out, just in case they decide to accept me at some point.

I'm still very excited though, I don't care about LttP randomizer BUT it may open the door for other randomizers in the future, which is a quickly-growing subset of the community and I think would inject a lot of life into GDQ

I don't like it because it's almost completely still the same game. All it does is change routing a little bit, oh I guess the pendents/crystals are shuffled too but it really doesn't mean much.

Playing like Z1 or Z2 randomized is so much more refreshing and different.
