Ideally, in a world where people routinely pretend to be people they aren't online, police would have checked to see if the accounts posting the images belonged to the man--and if he was the only who had access to said accounts--before arresting him. How did it take them 42 days to do basic police work? It can't have taken 42 days to find out the accounts didn't belong to him, so what made someone finally do the right thing and check?

Japan's police are less problematic than US police, but cases like this illustrate that you always need to be wary of law enforcement. All it takes is a mix up or someone not doing their job competently, and your life will get turned upside down. And it's hard to get money or compensation out of them when they do mess up like this.

Filthy goppers deserve neither quarter, nor pity. Fuck em.

How sure are you that there is nothing wrong with the bill itself? What the government claims a bill is for and what it actually does can be quite different---especially when it comes to terrorism, national security, or protecting children. There is a truck load of shitty bills claiming to protect children floating around at the federal level right now that are wildly unpopular publicly, and are designed to vastly increase police power, reduce privacy, and could be used to severely discriminate against LGBT+ people.

I don't know a thing about this bill since I don't live in California, but it is a mistake to assume that legislation is always written in good faith. Rest assured though, good or bad, this bill will probably rise from the ashes at some point. Almost all legislation like this gets at least a second chance at life, whether it was a good bill or not.

I really question whether programming as we know it can survive another 5 years.
I wonder at this level of pessimism. ChatGPT is intended, ultimately, to be a commercial product. Of course there is plenty of hype. I'm sure that some folks are getting a ton of use out of it, but you also see plenty of less up-voted posts from developers who spend more time fixing code it spits out than it would have to write the code themselves, or who can't get it to do much. The claim is always that they aren't prompting correctly, but one does have to consider the hype.

As well as the problem that the limits of the technology really aren't know. Are the possibilities really limitless, or will we see the technology plateau shortly? There is, after all, a finite amount of training data available and I have to imagine they are already using about as much as they can.

Nen is probably the best pick because it's universally useful and not completely random, outside of specialization. For the others, there's a decent chance you get fucked over by a horrible ability or get a completely useless ability.
I think Nen is a worse choice than Stand. The kind of Nen you are born with is random, limiting what abilities you could choose. Moreover, no matter kind you have or what cool ability you think of, it doesn't matter if you are born without much power. Virtually all Stands are cool and so whether you get an existing Stand from the manga or something new that matches your soul, you are unlikely to get something shitty. In a world without Stands (so that you don't get subjected to the huge downside of attracting other Stand users to you) you have all kinds of possibilities open up. Just having a stylish, invisible double of yourself that can't be affected by any normal damage would be awesome without the additional power(s).

TopicCanada is destroying the internet?
darkmaian23
07/05/23 8:29:11 AM

Wow, I'm kind of honored to get mentioned by someone. I'm a bit short on time right now to watch a video, but the two things I've heard regarding Canada and the internet are about services no longer carrying news over a law meant to compensate media outlets, and some kind of online harms bill, which I can only assume is like the UK's proposed internet safety legislation or the whole flock of evil bills that are currently circulating in Congress here in the US. Essentially, all major world powers feel that the government and police have insufficient access to private communications and your online activity, and also have insufficient control over what can be said and done online. Under the guise of protecting minors from harm, they seek to all change that while silencing all criticism by painting opponents as monsters for not wanting to help children.

Canada's legislation is the one I've heard the least about, but collectively, these all tend to feature the same ideas or will lead to the same things: no secure encryption (because police need to read all messages), the scanning of all communications and uploads and maybe what's on your device too (trust us, these AI tools work great!), age gating to prevent minors from seeing inappropriate content (more closely tying a user's real identity to what they do and say online and modifying behavior and restricting access to information). Individually, some of these ideas may not sound so bad...until you notice that no criticism is being considered, that they are all coming together at once, and until you zoom out and consider the wider political landscape (the LGBTA+ community is probably more outspoken about this stuff in the US than any other group).

If this video is about something different--or if there are novel considerations in it--do let me know and I'll swing back to it when I get time.

TopicDid Flash bomb cuz of movie quality or Ezra unpopularity?
darkmaian23
07/03/23 10:28:20 AM
#27
If you pay attention to entertainment news, you knew about the reboot coming for DC before deciding whether to watch the Flash. If you cared about the Flash, you've probably seen the zillion seasons of the CW show using a different version of the Flash. If neither of those describes you, your first exposure to the Flash might have been watching the Justice League, in which case you could be forgiven for not wanting to see any more of him (or anyone else in the movie, with the possible exception of Henry Cavil). Or maybe you like the Flash but have either read the comic or watched the animated version of Flashpoint, in which case you might not have felt like watching another version of the same thing for theater prices.

Or you may have known about Ezra's behavior. At that juncture, you would either give the movie a chance or not. If you gave it a chance, then chances are the bizarre antics of the Flash made you uncomfortable in light of how the actor behaves in real life, and on social media or amongst your friend group, you might have had unkind things to say about it.

Superhero fatigue might be a thing, but the Flash came in with a lot of issues that other popcorn flicks don't have. Blue Beetle is going to have similar struggles because of the coming reboot, and because dude + power armor is covered by a rather large number of characters in movies at this point. And in terms of the modern rendition of Blue Beetle, I don't think there is a lot of material to work with.

That's kind of gross, actually. I can understand wanting to be a nurse and not wanting your condition to affect you, but it's not OK to fulfill your life dream at the expense of the people you are supposed to be helping. I see this type of thinking a lot in posts on Reddit about seizures. People keep getting them, they know they could kill other people on the road, but they claim they still drive anyway. I wish I could drive, but even from a purely selfish standpoint, driving is useless if you die on the way.
