It's unequivocally bad, and contrary to SHRIKE's claim, nobody's heart was in the right place while writing it. It's one of those "think of the children" surveillance bills that will limit free speech and kill encryption in the UK, and provide further cover for similar efforts in the US and EU.

For now. It's not inconceivable that laws might eventually be passed to require makers of operating systems to periodically scan your devices for unauthorized AI technology (governments would already like to do this for child abuse material, drugs, and terrorism related content). An easier first step to control might be making the unauthorized distribution of AI materials illegal. If vigorously pursued, that would eventually lead to AI technology being pushed to the dark web and reduce access.

I in no way advocate for any such measures, but it is unrealistic to think they might not be tried. I'm not particularly optimistic that misuse by governments, police, and prosecutors will be addressed with any speed (or ever). I think there will be a reckoning sooner or later regarding society's inability to address the problems with inequality, policing, and the justice system.

At least some of the services require under a minute of audio to copy your voice, and with the exception of certain accents, the results are perfectly convincing.

That "recording" of you confessing to a crime a prosecutor presents to the court?
The "secret recording" your ex-wife presents in a custody hearing where you threaten to hurt your children?
That "conversation" your boss or coworker recorded where you admitted to unethical or illegal behavior?
The audio "recording" that the spam caller has of you enthusiastically agreeing to be billed for services?
That call your elderly parents received where you begged them for money or personal information, with a number that looked just like yours (phone number spoofing is a thing, if you didn't know)?

Yeah, none of those have to really be you, and in the short to medium future, I don't know how society is going to come to grips with this as knowledge of the technology and its use spreads. It will also impact all types of professional voice work, and make misinformation much easier to propagate. Embarrassing or confusing or even criminal deep fake photos are well on there way (but not great yet), and video will follow in likely just a few years.

I feel like one of the big issues here, is that the data being fed into the AI's machine learning has to come from somewhere

this data doesn't just come from nothing
If by that you mean that you don't think an AI image generator can generate abuse photos without having been trained on them, you're actually wrong. AI generators can create all sorts of things without a model trained on something specific, you'll just typically get better or more accurate results with specific models (like there are a ton of models for creating anime characters in a specific style, or retro photographs, etc). The base Stable Diffusion model was trained on a data set that specifically excludes any illegal images or content.

I'm not sure what to think of the guy. I don't have a link handy, but I recall reading from more than one source that Ashton Kutcher had a strong part in lobbying the EU to formulate and try and pass that legislation they are working on to ban private communications and to mandate scanning all messages for abuse and criminal activity. Someone who used to work for his organization is now part of another group which recently made news for trying to get Apple to roll out that scanning technology they shelved because it doesn't work and is dangerous.

Maybe Kutcher and his non-profit are above-board, but I personally feel he might be a piece of shit who does some good to try and cover for it.

...image generation in order to keep children safe from abuse:
https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/09/ai-generated-child-sex-imagery-has-every-us-attorney-general-calling-for-action/

They want a panel formed to study the issue and then regulations to follow. Their letter is all over the place, and they aren't especially clear about which dangers they think need to be addressed. Is it deviants who might create abuse images using a stock model like Stable Diffusion? Is it the potential creations of models using actual abuse material? Maybe training a model to create images of specific children? Or it somehow about deviants and criminals using fictional abuse material to groom real life children? You can't be sure reading the letter, nor does it provide a satisfying explanation as to why the large number of ways in which child abuse material is already illegal fail to be sufficient.

There is good reason to be suspicious of the intentions behind this letter. In the US, UK, and EU, legislation is currently in the works that would effectively ban private communications, mandate increased surveillance of all communications online, and censor content on the internet, all with the specified goal of protecting children. There is also a UN Cybercrimes Treaty in the works that in its present draft form would increase surveillance and police powers with essentially no added safeguards.

In the US specifically, there is an entire scattershot of bills floating around at the federal level for "protecting children". I feel like this letter might target EARN IT directly because Congress has been trying to pass it for years, and part of what it does is create an unelected committee of mostly law enforcement experts to make rules about what is acceptable on the internet to protect children, which sounds an awful lot like what the letter suggests as a starting point. Even if you take these suggestions at face value and think the ends justify the means, you have to consider the broader picture. Porn ID laws have been popping up in states, and they are generally bipartisan. Abortion has been made illegal in many places, and there are ongoing efforts to reduce the rights of women. Efforts to reduce the rights of LGBT people, and worse, to conflate such people with abusers, are ongoing and this never gets talked about in the context of this "think of the children" legislation. For a segment of the public and the politicians they vote for, protecting children from abuse means protecting them from gay or transgender people or things that don't align with their religious views.

I think people need to be made aware of this and the dangers present. It's also good to have discussions about difficult topics, I think.

This man is nuts. You said you aren't afraid of any violence, but I'm skeptical of your assessment. Your father is a controlling, manipulative stalker who has no concept of respect or boundaries. You have spent minimal time with him. You cannot really be sure violence isn't in his bag of tricks. Often, abusive people will control their actions as circumstances dictate. If he catches you on the street with no witnesses and minimal surveillance, or if he manages to get you somewhere private, who can say what will happen?

This, of course, excludes the extra games like the Atelier Iris trilogy and the two Mana Khemia games, all of which feature alchemy heavily but are more like traditional RPGs.

Yeah, I was completely confused by the Harry x Ginny romance in the books. Harry x Luna, Harry x Hermione, or just Harry as a single man comfortable with a group of loving friends all made sense. Harry x Ginny never made sense because for the most part, Ginny wasn't really a character and had no depth. The only way I could think that might make sense is that Harry wanted in on the Weasely family love, and married Ginny for that. Which would be kind of gross and dark.
