It's not really a unique typing because of Skarmory. Although the typing is unique for a legendary. The verdict is still out on whether the Ultra Beasts are even considered legendaries. The game code has them grouped into the same category of Pokemon that includes stuff like Articuno and Suicune, but the game itself does not refer to them as legendaries during the story or the post-game where you have to catch the Ultra Beasts. I thought it'd be Guzzlord for sure, even factoring in the Dark typing (which is one of the most popular types). After all, we kicked out 2 Dark types in the bottom 2. Its design is hideous, and it's not even a unique typing. No, we already have TWO Steel/Fairy Pokemon. We don't need some bullshit EVENT legendary that covers a pre-existing type. Get the fuck outta here with that shit. This thing is just Diancie all over again, without the dumb fucking decision to make it a Mega Evolution as well. I know we already have two previous Steel/Fairy Pokemon, but neither of them play similarly to Magearna. Mawile is a physical attacker, Klefki is a support Pokemon, and Magearna is a special attacker. That's three different Pokemon that just happen to share the exact same typing. In any case, we'll eventually run out of unused type combinations. Besides actual "he's an oblivious idiot" random things, it's easily reset his team for new regions, or at the very least not use super-teams for leagues. With the exception of his Pikachu, the rest of the Pokemon on his team are Pokemon from the region he's currently exploring. Although the Johto region was an exception, since he used some of the Pokemon he caught in Kanto when traveling through Johto, but that might be due to Kanto and Johto having such close ties to each other. It'll be interesting to see if Ash gets an Alolan Form as one of his 6 Pokemon for his Alola region team. They make these things every generation, but Magearna is a lot more interesting than most if not all the others. Steel / Fairy is a cool typing too being a lot better than the mono-typing a bunch of the other cute mythical Pokemon has. It's also absolutely fantastic competively, really dominating the OU tier since Meta Metangross was banned. It's lovely to use. It's ability is really good too, though it is a bit lame how similar to Beast Boost it is. Moxie would be a closer comparison for its ability. Magearna has an ability that can only boost Special Attack when a Pokemon gets KOed. However, it actually works in Double Battles when a Pokemon on your side of the field gets KOed, so the ability is very strong in Doubles. Moxie can't do that. Beast Boost is similar to Moxie, but it can boost a single stat depending on which stat is the highest. I think the closest comparison to Popplio/Brionne/Primarina would be the entire Chikorita starter line. Popplio is at least gender neutral, but Brionne/Primarina are feminine looking. The entire Chikorita starter line looks feminine, so that's one thing they have in common with Brionne/Primarina. However, it was much easier to ignore Chikorita since it was Grass type and it came after Gen I where the starter battle was mainly Charmander vs. Squirtle, so a lot of people developed a preference for choosing Fire or Water starters in later generations. Chikorita and its evolutions also sucked in-game. Playing through GSC would have been quite rough with Chikorita, since the entire starter line has poor offensive stats. This reminds of a time where Nick originally ranked Popplio above Litten and Rowlet, but this was well before Brionne and Primarina were officially revealed. In the now deleted #e3-2016 channel, this was a conversation I had between Nick and myself: Luster Soldier: If Popplio's final evolution turns out to be Water/Fairy, would you still pick him? Whiskey Nick: Water is such a great typing that it makes up for the trash that is Fairy Those were not the exact words posted in the #e3-2016 channel since the channel is deleted, but I tried my best to paraphrase the conversation as best I could. I do find it a bit unusual that Nick was still on the Popplio train even though there was a possible chance of Water/Fairy for the final evolution. When any Pokemon is Fairy, you have to suspect there a good chance that it will have a feminine looking design. Nintendo is currently putting up 82.15% on Sony (as of 12:20 AM) despite the Switch getting only 61.36% on the PS4 in a poll from 3 days ago. This year's E3 isn't quite up to the same level of disappointment compared to 2012, where the "Nobody" option was the overall winner with 27.47%. If you don't use my spreadsheet, remember to check that you have 105 Pokemon, that every Pokemon has a unique rank and that all 105 numbers are used. There's always one.
