yeah it can get slow in places. I get stuck too. I've been sitting on a save file of Chris end of Chapter 1 for a couple months now. it's hard to find the motivation to do the Chris lv 99 trick all the way through when you could be doing other things.

having angry fans is one of those "good problems" IMO

put it this way - over the course of half a decade Capcom put out some amazing games. 3s, Marvel 2, CvS2. and for all the crap it gets, Capcom Fighting Jam wasn't really a bad game. it just wasn't very interesting. the initial reactions to balance issues actually probably ended up being false. just no one played it because it didn't have that certain something.

during that time period, Capcom had a small but dedicated fanbase. In other words "not enough to keep them making new good games." so they stopped making fighting games.

along comes SF4. I'll ask forgiveness for my probably unpopular opinion in this circle, but I don't think SF4 is particularly good. a lot has been written about why that is, some of it by me, so I won't go into it. it sold really well. IIRC it sold the best since SF2, right? that's really good. so the small vocal fanbase that loved the older games b****es constantly, but a lot more people like it and are buying it and they're making money.

then MvC3. I'm no expert here, so anyone can feel free to correct me. but my sense here is that the community acted similarly - some pros played it, some pros never touched it, most of them think it is worse than MvC2, and it sold a lot better than 2 ever did.

then finally SFxT. at this point I don't think it's controversial to describe SFxt as a messy broken awful game. it sold a lot less than was expected. it still sold a lot more than it should have (guilty as charged).

but it's worth mentioning that even when all those cult good games were being made, people still b****ed. a fair amount of ST fans s*** on 3s and CvS2 for years for not being ST. which is one reason why it took a few years of being basically dead before the general American community realized that 3s was actually good (it took Japan coming over and showing us how to play it for that to happen).

so no matter what, Capcom gets a small minority of angry people hating anything new that they make. the difference is, now they're making a lot more money doing it. I would imagine that through the sea of angry fans they're probably happier now than they were in the 3s/MvC2/CvS2 era. I think there's signs that it won't keep working though - SF4 was a huge success and people have been buying less Capcom FGs since. it hasn't been a collapse, but the numbers are dwindling. there's a lot of negativity about all of Capcom's newish games out there and it might be slowly catching up with them.

even their ports of new games are having mixed success. supposedly HDR and 3SOE sold reasonably well, but the dedicated community for those games has pretty much rejected both. HDR because it's HDR, OE because it's not arcade perfect. actually there's been talk of going back to PS2 for American console tournaments. which is not a good look at all. because no one thinks the PS2 port is that great.

I don't know anything but I know people used to import the TG CD games or whatever. so there's probably a way and probably relatively easy at this point. I know we got a few TG 16 fans here though so they'll probably be more helpful than me

I'm not convinced it's impossible, actually. I mean, put it this way: we got beat down super hard in the early iterations of SF4, but now the field is super and wide open to the point anyone could possibly take Evo. If a scene for 3S sprung back up again, don't you think we could possibly catch up?

yeah but the difference is that Japan has like 5+ extra years on us at this point, for the various sets of time where no one was playing it over here. it shows, too - we've never done anything but get crushed by the Japanese anywhere outside Evo (where they only had a few people come every year). whenever we went to SBO we got bodied pretty hard.

there's probably like 5 guys total in the US who could hang with the Japanese right now. not sure if it'll ever be much more. it's possible that like you said we could have a 3s revival but OE didn't do a lot towards that and 3s is one of those games where pretty much no one likes to play on console, it's arcade or nothing. and we don't have that many arcades. sucks but I just figure it's unlikely. if you wanna get good at 3s as an American you basically gotta go live in Japan at this point.

eh. that s*** is overstated. she's dominant and sucky when she has two bars of meter. before that you shouldn't be afraid of her. she has very specific answers to situations and basically no offensive tools before she has SA2 and she's not hard to deal with. the only part where she sucks to fight against is when she's got you backed in the corner, threatening you with cr mks and kara throwing you all day.

you're saying you hope he levels his 3s Chun up to that point? hm maybe but it's probably unlikely. being top 5 Chun in the US does mean something but the US is so far behind Japan at this point it's ridiculous. gap keeps widening because 3s barely has a tournament presence here and it's still one of the more popular arcade games in Japan. the really good Chuns like Nuki Rikimaru etc are so good at this point that I doubt anyone from the US will ever catch up.

-one program to buy and launch all your games
-sold at a reasonable price
-easiest way to install a bunch of games on a new computer. don't need to go find the installers or discs for all your games, just copy your Steam folder over.
-easy and universal friends list and community features
-DRM is mostly non-invasive compared to the alternatives

it's pretty telling that people buy things from the Humble Indie Bundle and then install it in Steam. DRM sucks but the benefits outweigh downsides in this case for most people.

I'm hoping the Wii U will have built-in HD upscaling on all previous gen games. It's never going to happen, but it would be nice.

well you can't upscale most of the games Nintendo could sell on those services anyway. N64, Gamecube and Wii for sure. but you can't upscale the stuff that came out for NES/SNES/Genesis/TG-16/arcade, and they probably can't get games that released on most of the other successful 3D consoles.

now now, nintendo's making strides in online. some is catch up, some is new stuff to consoles, but they still haven't figured out how many people want to be able to just have a single store with it all yet. or the tech for it. i'm honestly not sure what the hold up there is.

well so far how they've done it is write platform-specific game-specific emulators and hack them up to run a single game. so with each new console release they have to write a new emulator, and with each new game re-release they have to apply game specific hacks until it works kind of sort of properly. that's most likely the hold up.

I guess that's a bright side of 3s ranked matches. a win or loss is worth the same value regardless of how good you are. 3s has the exact opposite problem though - once some guys realize you're good they start ducking you in ranked forever.

Nah that doesn't work in 3s. You can buffer the second qcf but for the move to come out you have to hit the appropriate button. I think most people 'just do it' though. Or some are like me and use it mostly for punishing whiffs and dashes

feel like I've really figured this "beating online shotos" thing out over time. I used to complain about online fraud Akuma but these days whenever I see a shoto online I expect it to be a free win unless I know the other guy and know he's good. there's a rollback'd hit confirm in there and a dropped parry of his tatsu but other than that it was mostly good. now if I can just figure out how to beat goddamn Urien guess parry types and Ibuki "what the hell is going on lag online edition calm down you crazy b****" types I'll be set.
