Alright everyone, it's time for some Suikoden III! I've never gotten anywhere with this game, but I want to. I hear it's a great RPG and I do enjoy me some great RPGs. The only thing that really ever put me off from it is that the battles are so quiet. They bugged me a bit.
But anywho, I want to play this. I know nothing about the series and barely anything about the game. I do recall that the game goes in some kind of order of whose stories you want to play first. If anyone can tell me which one I should do first, I'd appreciate that!
But first things first: Rules for this topic.
1) Don't post spoilers unless I've gotten to them. Seriously, don't do it. Not even with the little black banner. I can't handle it. For reals.
2) Feel free to give me advice on wtf I should do and what I should watch out for.
3) Discussion on character and story isn't only recommended, it's ALLOWED.
It's really that easy. So without further ado... I'll start on this playthrough momentarily.

Just to warn you... there are going to be some things that refer to the prior games. It probably won't bother you, but it would definitely add to the experience if you'd played the first two.
ANIME INTRO! How mysterious. It tells me a bit about the game and looks cool, at least. Eh, I approve. I can dig it. I'll begin with Hugo. Now then, I remember the one thing annoying about PS2 is having to find which memory card I had with this game. For those interested, I played Geddoe's story first for whatever reason and got kind of far into the first part.
But now I must enter the FLAME CHAMPION'S name. Eh, it'll be P Biz because why not. It asks if I want to load Suikoden II info. I wonder what that does.
Our hero Hugo....
Is riding on some kind of green unicorn thing with who I believe must be Howard the Duck. But maaaaan this game is quiet! Where's our background music? I don't want to hear chirping! It turns out our duck friend is... Sgt. Joe. What the hell? This duck better be awesome or I will resent this. Wait, their gryphon is a character who is named FUBAR? I've got to say, if I didn't know anything about this game at all to know it's an awesome RPG, I would probably be very put off by this by now. They didn't spend a lot of time on gryphon walk animations, I think. Anyway, I talk to a dude named Lulu...
And we have some chick named Lucia who wants to talk to our hero. I can choose a formation but uh, I'll just let them go put them in the order for me.
Hugo Sgt. Joe ---------------Fubar (That's actually his name.) Lulu --------------Noone Noone
I'm not sure why everyone is already level 10+. It doesn't really make sense to me. Maybe it makes sense to you guys! Anyway, I am running around the village. I can't loot anyone's homes. This is a complete ripoff. However, I run into some chick named Anne. What up gurl? She's going to open a pub. How lovely. I talk to some random dude who says he's glad to have married someone who cooks. I'm guessing he means Lucia. But yeah, I'm talking to people and eventually I get a Medicine D from some duck. Nice. I find some Jimba dude playing with an armor.
"OH FOX DUNG." Whaaaaaat?
Some chick called Luce comes out and insults Hugo. B****. And then Lucia and Hugo must speak! Oh, Lucia is Hugo's mom. I need to deliver a message to some guys to make a peace treaty and stuff. Luce is like the biggest b****. Putting her own son on blast. I find a training center after this conversation, but I don't get it. Oh well, it loks like my journey SHALL BEGIN!
I try to advance but uh, the duck doesn't let me. What the hell? I wander around until I go into a building that lets me prepare. Well then. The duck wants to pack 10 different outfits. But hey! The next day, everyone is wishing our heroes luck! Yay! Lucia is sweet while Luce bearhugs the f*** out of Lulu. WHY DOES EVERYONE'S NAME BEGIN WITH A LU? Also, the gryphon yells for no reason. Alright. And now it's time to play for reals now.
Going to continue playing right now.

there are just parts where after a certain point a certain amount of characters become recruitable, and some of them are hard to find/figure out how to recruit without a guide.
I go on my awesome journey but Jimba gets in the way and wants me to deliver something to the Lightfellow family. Uh, sure. It's a pentagram I guess. Sorry, a pentacle. OH MAN I GOT SO MANY PATHS I CAN GO ON NOW! I can go to a duck village or head to my destination. ...Eeeeeeh I'll head to my destination for now. If I should go to the duck village, somebody tell me.
I get to my first fight! ...Uh, those are bunnies with swords. What the f***? And I have to fight two people in my groups? That's... peculiar. Someone explain this battle process to me. Well, that fight was really easy. Next is Furrify, which I assume turns people into furries. How gruesome. Btw, the duck has a battle axe. What the god damn is up with that? I got a ? Figurine for my troubles. Ooookay.
I basically mashed X to victory for each of the battles, so here's to hoping it gets a bit more interesting when I get to Brass Castle!

You battle in groups of 2, one front line and one back line.
Selecting "Attack" means both will attack, selecting an item means one of them will use the item and the other will attack, etc.
PROTIP: Put Hugo and Fubar in the same group for easy mode.
"? Figurine" and "? Painting" and "? Pot" and whatnot need to be appraised for the party to know what they are, or else you can bring a character with Appraisal as a skill in your party to instantly know.

This duck better be awesome or I will resent this.
Fortunately he is.
I'm not sure why everyone is already level 10+. It doesn't really make sense to me. Maybe it makes sense to you guys!
As you're probably aware by now, you control different parties at different points of the game. Since they come from different backgrounds, they start at different levels. The reason Hugo is already Level 12 is because he already has a decent amount of combat experience. By contrast, one of the main PCs starts at Level 1 to indicate his/her complete inexperience.
I thought it was a nice touch personally.
also if you plan to get all the characters you will probably need a guide
For what it's worth, this is not a game you need to play with a guide at your side. While some characters are a bit tricky to recruit, there is some great news: (almost) none are permanently missable. The only way to miss some PCs is to choose a rather blatantly wrong choice late in the game, and to choose it three times.
This means that you can recruit or not at your own pace, and if you want the 108 stars ending (worth it IMO, only Suikoden I'll say this about), you can always use a guide to grab the ones you can't find on your own, at the end of the game.

Holy s***, I'm poor as f***. I upgrade Hugo's sword, and then I have no money left to even buy armor! What the hell!? lol The birds don't even fly away when they get close. I can run up against them and they give no f***. People are passing through, like this hottie Chris. Oooooh yes. I don't even mind that she has a dude's name. She look banging in that armor. Her full name is Chris Lightfellow, which Hugo is like "Dur, that sounds familiar." Dude, come on. You literally got told you need to deliver something to the Lightfellows this very day. You can't even remember that one name? Hugo remembers and wants to give the pentacle to her, but this Roland douche gets all up in his grill.
We get to the Zexan Forest and we know we're going to right way because duck's tail feathers agree. lulz I go through until I find... Fred and Rico? I dunno. They have a mission and Rico is too fat to keep up. I find a corpse with a Recipe #2 beside it. Uuuuh awesome? Random dead soldiers hauling around Recipes. Honestly, this is pretty easy so far. And not very complex. Here's to hoping there's more to the system than just this.
Anyway, I made it to the end easily, and now I'm in Vinay del Zexay. What a name. I'm going to make food and then continue.

Oh and now that you're in Vinay del Zexay you can do the lottery. The trick I use that wins 95% of the time is... Buy 5 random/Buy 5 seq tickets. . Not a spoiler or cheating, just a strategy that you can choose to use or not!

Anyway, I make it to, uh.. that place I was going to be going to (It's been too long for me to remember exotic names!) I accidentally find the Lightfellow place by running into a wall and a Butler is here to greet us. We chit chat and I give up the Pentacle. I get... nothing for my troubles! I chose to get nothing. Like a hero.
I'm running through the city, enjoying that I don't feel compelled to try and check every box and jar that I see! It's a relief! Eventually I find an inn where a girl gives me Script #2. Neato. I wander around for a while and find much of nothing! I go to the middle to talk to the IRONHEAD. Basically, we can't do anything until we walk around and waste a day. Whoo.
Eventually I find some Guillaume guy who is telling a kid named Melville about his LIAR COWARD father. Melville will get proof of a ship, I guess, to clear his father's name. Eventually I run into two kids named Alanis and Elliot, and that Elliot kid is like the biggest b**** and couldn't finish his bean soup because it smells bad. Anyway, we go find this seekirit castle of these kids and tell them a password, and then Melville joins us. Anyway, they want us to go find Melville's dad. I guess we don't have anything more important to do, right? They introduce themselves with sentai poses, and that's good enough for us to bring some kids on dangerous adventures!
I go ahead and troll around and avoid the plot to check out the duck town! ...It was incredibly disappointing. I leveled up a bit and made it back to the area I ought to be at. So yeah. Next time I shall go ahead and help the children!

for money problems, I've always done the "buy 10 lottery tickets, walk around then save, then keep soft resetting until you get a lot of money" thing. I think you're pretty much expected to play the lottery in early chapters, there's too much stuff to buy and not enough money early on.
Yeah, so I decide I'm going to help out those kids. I get in one random encounter and get f***ing thrashed by some Daggermouths. Well! I guess that's getting done some other time!
Then I realize those brats are by the entrance of the city, so I chat them up and Melville and Alanis join my party! And... Elliot does so temporarily? Good. He's a f***ing vag. This is proven when he cries about walking too much. I hope he falls off a cliff. Then Hugo chats it up with Alanis. She gives a sob story about how she goes city to city with her tradesman father and never makes friends. Also, Lulu can't wake up for some reason. WHAT A LAUGH.
Anyway, I start up the spiral area and then get to the next area where I have my first fight with the kiddos! They level three times from two bandits. How special. I do a few more fights and the kiddos keep leveling up. Damn, the levels fly now. But anyway, I get to the end and... GUILLAUME IS THERE TRAPPING THE MAIN HEROES WHILE THE KIDS ARE LOCKED WITH HIM OH NO! Guillaume apparently keeps his riches here. I wonder how he gets past all the Daggermouths.
ANYWAY, I beat down a bunch of bandits, and then it's Melville vs Guillaume! WHO WINS!? Melville does not. It's some duel thing and he is taken out in one hit. Did I do something wrong? ANYWAY, they all realize daddy didn't lie after Guillaume runs away from everyone. BECAUSE ALL KNIGHTS KNOW HOW TO USE LEVERS (I hate Elliot). But yeah. Everyone is happy and I need to get the children back home. I save at the city and we'll pick up again later.

This game is soooo slow and I don't want to re-do progress.
yeah it can get slow in places. I get stuck too. I've been sitting on a save file of Chris end of Chapter 1 for a couple months now. it's hard to find the motivation to do the Chris lv 99 trick all the way through when you could be doing other things.
