You missed the the end of Third Strike by three-to-six minutes depending on which of those posts was your first from your house. They had, like, two minutes of Capcom vs SNK 2, and then switched to ST.

Tournament of Legends is gonna be awesome

wish they would have a similar tournament for 3s but since only a handful of the good Japanese and almost none of the good Americans show up to Evo it probably wouldn't work out anyway. no one wants to play 3s on console. but hey, at least SBO is a thing. I'm sure Evo will generate a lot more interest on B8 than SBO but I'll be following SBO with much greater interest. maybe if Evo hadn't switched to console back in the day it would've all turned out differently.

as an aside, I miss the days where they couldn't patch s*** easily and you decided whether a game was worth playing based on the initial incarnation. you take the infinites, you take the cheap s***, that's the game. either it's still worth playing with the cheap stuff (3s, Marvel 2) or it isn't (Alpha 3, CvS).

when Capcom tried to release a new version of 3s that removed Oro and Urien's unblockables, the 3s community voted to keep playing the old one. No one plays version 990608 even though it's probably "fairer" or whatever. Imagine if that happened today. As soon as someone discovered the Aegis unblockables people would've been on twitter complaining and begging for it to get fixed. And man, I can't even imagine how Marvel 2 would've gone. It's basically a broken game and people played it anyway. It would look so vastly different if it released in this era of "patch every infinite, unblockable, and thing people complain about."

SFxT would probably fail the "is this game worth playing long term" test with the initial version, but it's not like it's going to survive anyway even with the patches. and really they should just let Marvel 3 rock, infinites and all. I mean it's Marvel.

This is the excuse I keep hearing, and I can never understand why trying to uphold the legacy of a bad game (Purely from a design standpoint) is a free pass to let a potentially great fighting game never reach that potential. You're too concerned with making it "Marvel" than you are making it "good." This purist bullcrap is half the reason TvC never took off (The other half was that it was a Wii game) and why Marvel 3 probably won't ever reach its potential. The selling point, even back when Vanilla was about to launch, was how crazy and unfair the game is. Balance? Nobody's balanced, that's what makes it balanced. At least, that's their version of it.

I'm sorry, but I'm just really sick of this attitude that just because it's a follow up to Marvel 2, it's alright if it makes the same mistakes. Unless you wouldn't mind if SFIV brought back random damage and stun values again.

I just don't see the point in patching every last infinite or imbalance. just let the game develop and people will either keep playing it or eventually decide it's too stupid to keep bothering with. when I say "it's Marvel" I mean the series already has a history of really dumb abusive stuff and it still turned out competitively interesting. so let this do the same. worst case scenario it turns out you made a badly designed game (which hey, Capcom since the SF4 era) and the community starts playing something else. best case scenario, it fits into the overall picture and becomes part of the metagame.

to further the point above, CvS2 actually got roll canceling patched out in an updated release. Nobody plays CvS2 EO because it sucks and isn't interesting to play.

SFxT would still be a broken game because Capcom explicitly said they would never release an updated edition besides maybe a GotY that came pre-patched. This is absolutely not the same thing as 'this game is starting to develop an interesting metagame, but infinites are degenerate and different from the normal cheap stuff because they counterplay is not there'. The thing that you're not getting is that you don't watch Marvel often, unlike I do (Biolizard doesn't either, so I'm divorcing my position from him). At this point, so far, we have a clear 'best character' in Zero, but even that Best Character is just not dominant enough to warp the game around him, and new tech is still being found every day. The game is healthy, it supports multiple playstyles, and every character except Hsien-Ko and Phoenix Wright is viable and potentially hugely dangerous with proper teamcomp. Could it be better? Sure, but the thing is that it's still a good game, and the only guys who refuse to accept this at this point are Groggy Dumb ****s, mostly haters who don't play the game. It doesn't need lots of patching that sets things right by fixing something broken at this point, even though one more balance patch would be great to even things up a bit. The TAC Infinites are just something that doesn't really have a place in the game beyond being able to run out the clock without, literally, letting the opponent play at all. Capcom's old business model is terrible and it's good to have patching, so that no-gameplay tech can be taken out to keep the game fast and lean.

I wasn't calling anybody here that, Bio. It's just a more general statement because lots of people, especially Marvel 2 fogeys, act like that game wasn't an obviously broken, assy mess when it came out. People say Marvel 3 is a bad game, but to an unbiased observer it is *very clearly* poised to be a competitive, healthy game for a long time, minus TAC infinites.
