AP News has a decent general breakdown. https://apnews.com/article/effects-of-government-shutdown-donald-trump-4a16fc477eb67b7cf7ac708e578146e3

Things that are "essential functions" continue, sometimes in limited capacities (like, the military still works though civilians and contractors may be put on furlough and be prohibited from working, it depends on their position). Some functions might continue but with delays. Some organizations will shutdown mostly.

There's usually backpay to employees after it re-opens.

This one has been a particular shit show. Usually at least a week out from a potential shutdown there's a lot of federal guidance put out and people know what to expect. This time it was all treated almost like some word of mouth rumor mill with a lot of people and a lot of organizations not really understanding what was going to happen.

The post office is its own entity unsupported by tax dollars.

That's all I really care about personally since I sell things online.

Some of the DoD does get paid, though. The programs funded by working capital still have money to pay civilian employees for a couple weeks, at least.

Normally, the government makes good on the back pay owed to people that are required to work without pay during a shutdown.

But with this gang of crooks and clowns in charge, who knows what will happen.

And people that work for a living generally don't have a month or two of pay sitting around to be used when their employer is fucking up and not meeting payroll.

One of the better proposals I've seen is that members of Congress lose a day's pay for each day the government is shut down (and no making this up after the fact). Except I'd make it 3 days of lost pay for every day of shutdown.

For military, too - still get paid 1 October (for the 16 September-30 September pay period), and a lot of the credit unions that cater to the military (like USAA and Navy Federal) will traditionally front at least one paycheck.

During the 2019 shutdown Congress passed an act to get pay restarted for the DOD, too, since the shutdown was dragging on so long. However Coast Guard fall under DHS and didn't get paid through that act... Given all the attention to DHS this time around I doubt that would happen again.

Congressional pay abeyance is a joke. They are all living high off donors and many of them run private businesses. Any congressman acting like some moral champion by sacrificing their government pay check is a fucking fraud.

I'm sure they will not

If I were them I'd point out all the healthcare dollars they're trying to save and then show maps of states, highlighting how much money would go to each red county. To show the red voters how much money the Dems are fighting for them to have. Just make it simple and direct and easy to understand.

In a roundabout way, this reminds me of an anecdote from John Douglas (FBI behavioral science pioneer, and the inspiration for Jack Crawford in the Hannibal Lecter franchise). He was observing the Wayne Williams trial and the prosecutions case involved a lot of technical details, while Williams' lawyer "was a charming John Kennedy lookalike who smiled at the jury a lot."

At lunch the prosecutor team was laughing about how the defense attorney hadn't been effective and asked Douglas what he thought. He told them "You're losing the case. The jurors believe him."

Needless to say, that shocked them, but he helped them turn it around by advising them to pressure Williams until he lost his composure.

I don't think the Dems can make Reps lose their composure, but they can try to turn on the charm and get out their message in an easier to understand manner.

It's been threatened to happen almost every year over the past decade or so, but they always find some resolution (usually a "continuing" resolution, which just keeps approved spending as-is without... actually adjusting the budget and that has problems). But the most recent real shutdown was 2018-2019 under Trump.

Despite the government shutting down, many people still get paid during a shutdown. Shutdown doesnt necessarily mean everything is shutdown or that absolutely no one is paid.

It depends on the department and the budgets in that department. Theres some misinformation floating around that no one is paid, and I dont mean back pay. I mean paid, business as normal pay.

Well this sucks, this is exactly what Republicans wanted
Shut down the government means no Epstien files vote and the process to seat the most recent Democratic winner is also stalled even more and the Trump Adminstration can fire and will fire a shitload more of people all while Republicans pollute the airwaves blaming Democrats for wanting healthcare for illegals and transgender care, neither are things Democrats were wanting and even if they did want them Democrats straight up do not have the numbers to force anything and because the local and national news are all owned by right wing groups you'll hear the republican lies more than the truth which means you are probably gonna hear a random or two blame the democrats for this shutdown more than you hear them complain about the republicans.

These people are evil bastards with way too much power, I can only hope that enough independent media is quick to remind people and their auidences are also quick to remind people how powerless the democrats are, but some of these independents despise democrats wholesell and will not defend them at all because they want a real progressive movement to take over so I don't expect to hear the likes of TYTs, Kyle or a few others in that circle rush out to defend them.

What a shit show, this even harms the military and those ICE agents as with them not getting paid while being in stressful situations like say being deployed to American cities to police them, they as someone likely already pointed out in here will start committing crimes themselves like toll roads, robbing pedestrians and escalating violence

yeah he is, his admin already sent memos to various departments to get ready to fire people before this happened they always planned on shutting down the government and blaming the democrats for it, it's why Trump backed away from a meeting with democrats and started spouting off hatred towards immigrates and transgenders again, the demons around him have learned that Trump always agrees with the last person who spoke to him so they're making sure the only people who talk to him are his staffers of heritage foundation members, rich people and fox news contributors, they've truly learned how to control him, this is really JD Vance and Steven Miller's presidency with a dementa ridden decaying clown as the frontman and that's what so terrifying, everything these fuckers accuse the left of being and doing is projection, every single thing especially the pedophilia accusations, if you do a deep dive in the right wing, they're really into that shit more than once we've heard people go from "that's disgusting" to "well I'd rather it be a rich man than a insert group of people here" and "Oh, don't pretend you wouldn't do it too if you had their money and power!" kinda garbage

Conservatism is the final boss of capitalism, no morals, no empathy, not even any forward thinking just satisfying personal desires, obtaining as much money and power as possible and desperately trying to become a god and live forever, these people really believe in some crazy shit they think will prolong their lives longer like the medbed stuff from a day ago and changing muscle tissue and blood with a young person's.
