(big spoilers in this topic for Undertale, if that wasn't clear)

Arguments for Sans:
  • he's the toughest boss fight in the whole game, requiring precision reflexes
  • he can attack with blisteringly fast bones and Gaster Blasters that fire laser beams
  • he can inflict the "KARMA" status effect on opponents, sapping health over a period of time

Arguments for DK:
  • Sans is the easiest enemy. It says so in the game!
  • DK is unlikely to be moved by Sans's calm, accusatory speeches about the weight of his sins
  • if DK shoots Sans...Sans will dodge! But he can't dodge forever. Keep attacking.

Last topic DK folded Magus into a tiny ball and kicked him away. Today we have an unconventional fight for sure, so unconventional that I have no idea how it would play out! Undertale enemy encounters play out like mini-shmup sequences in a tiny box. Sans is a very hard boss fight, but how does that translate into an actual fight? Does DK's SOUL get shunted into the encounter box? Does Sans have to perform in a real-time setting? I don't know. Maybe you do? Either way, somebody's going to have a bad time...

Also last topic: the Chrono Trigger soundtrack is exactly twice as popular as the Donkey Kong Country soundtrack. How will it fare against a similarly beloved soundtrack today?

Sans decides not to take a turn, DK never gets a turn, DK isn't capable of the stealth required to sneak a turn in.

DK smashes.

Can he deal with Sans' karmic barrages? No. But DK's karma is really quite clean. He has done some mischief but I don't think he has ever done something that would really raise his LoVE. Put Sans up against Luca Blight and I vote Sans without a second thought. Not so with a more heroic character.

The amount of damage done over time is based on Karma. DK is too pure of heart for Sans' attacks to do meaningful damage

Sans

DK straight up cannot touch him. He's not a technical or sneaky hit kind of guy. Sans should be weaker against an evil person, because an evil person can withstand more karma stacks crushing them, but the main deciding factor on how much damage Sans is doing is how clean of a hit he's landing. His karma poison stacks every active frame you're in the attack, so the difference between just taking a hit or being grazed and moving out of the rest is like ten times the damage.

Those values are based on the amount of KARMA dots Sans applies to you with his attacks, and each attack does set amounts of KARMA per frame you're hit by it.

You're more likely to survive 40 KARMA applied by Sans as a person with a high level of violence/evil than as a pacifist. It's an all caps KARMA the same way LOVE is Level of Violence instead of just love.

They certainly do. 'You feel your sins crawling on your back' is not metaphorical there. Sans is using the misdeeds you committed to hurt you.

Okay but where is this shown? We never see Sans fight someone who isn't evil. I don't think just naming something KARMA is enough proof when Undertale gets cute with its naming all the time.

A Google search about this turns up another thread of people arguing about this, lol

Anyway Sans because even if we assume DK is completely immune to the poison effect, he's still getting tossed around by the physical attacks

If this is modern Donkey Kong he has still kidnapped Pauline and many Toads (Mario Vs Donkey Kong series) so he certainly can feel some effects from KARMA

It's not really theorizing. Sans' KARMA speeds up its draining the more it stacks and it cannot stack past the max of a person's soul integrity, in pure mechanic terms. A pacifist will have less HP (representing determination to keep on fighting in Undertale) as a rule than someone hardened to violence and with a will to kill, and so they will stack up a lesser max amount of karma. It's complicated but the gist of it is if you're a goody two shoes and get hit by ten lasers you will end up at 1 HP and so will someone who's rotten and vile...but the second guy will end up there quicker, as their racked up karma will be more corrosive.

But yeah what Hb said. All it is with him is "Do you think X character can hit him".

Sans is never getting hit. He does too much weird stuff for DK to react to, and ultimately will just refuse to let the battle proceed. At best, it's a draw. At worst, Sans solos.

Like if we assume the time slow is in play, it makes sense that DK would activate it after a few rounds of Sans attacking, then peg him with a coconut gun shot. He can probably tank two or three turns with Sans, and then he figures out Sans's deal, slows time, and hits him. Sans is very knowledgeable about time, but IIRC he has no defense against time being slowed.

How does that sound?

Weirdly, I feel like DK can do this one. Like, thinking about it as "Can DK handle sans' boss fight?" I think the answer to that is yes? And I think that's the nastiest thing sans can do. The life drain is an issue but DK has a pretty high life total, I think it's going to take too long to KARMA drain him completely.

I'm not sure if DK actually ko's sans after surviving the barrage or if sans just walks afterwards, but either way works for DK.

Yeah I agree that slowing time should let DK pull it off, especially since it still applies even if you switch off Snake Bananza, so he could use it then switch to Zebra Bananza for extra speed.

Edit: also he may be able to counter the DOT by putting Pauline in the outfit that restores health while in Bananza form.

Donkey Kong

I think sans would throw. Both of them are really lazy, but Donkey Kong would want to go out for bananas. sans would not respect the limits of this topic and would shrug and ask if DK wants to go eat bananas, and DK would go "OK!" and sans would give up so that DK would buy the food.

It's silly, but I don't see any reason for sans to keep it up battle-wise. Dude would get really tired really fast.
