It has a certain charm to it, and it's better than the following four games in the series, but man is it a mess...

Played the Pixel Remaster. There's not much there, but there are some neat things about it.

Played Pixel Remaster. Im glad it changed the remakes tendencies to make it more like the other FFs, which makes this FF even more plain than it already is. I like the NES weirdness. However, it still doesnt do enough and, even with the NES weirdness all in, it still doesnt feel that fun.

There's something about this game I just love. I really dig the permanence in the class selections-- like you can theoretically do it in Final Fantasy V but something about being locked in gives it a charm that feels less like you're doing a challenge run and more just like... you're playing the game with a dumb choice made. I don't know why this matters to me but it does psychologically. Like if I had infinite time I could see myself playing this game with every permutation of parties for fun-- couldn't see doing this with FFV. I also like the archaic "ineffective" stuff when you attack enemies into overkill. It just feels more strategic.

It's buggy as hell and yeah there are lots of flaws, but I have a lot of good memories with this game.

Like me when I picked black belt, thief, black mage, white mage. I couldn't use like half of the equipment because it was fighter specific. Also, thief was pretty horrible; its class change was better, but it did not make up for having such a useless class for the hardest parts of the game.

It did some things that the US console market hadn't seen before, so it gets credit there. It had some exceptionally difficult fights that were probably unfair because of the lack of strategies available, and it hasn't aged very well as a result.

Has some problems balancing between getting kicked in the rear in the early game and getting overleved if you explore a bit once once the game opens up (and this is the NES version). Some items close the gap between the classes a bit too much. "Ineffective" is good.

Still it's one of the few games I replay semi-yearly. Classic.

I'll give it an 8.

I played it on NES first, jank charm and everything. I can acknowledge the flaws of its coding now (also Marsh Cave, Earth Cave, and Ice Cave can all go fuck themselves) and also can acknowledge that the Pixel Remaster sucks in comparison to GBA, but at least allows for intended mechanics that didn't actually work in NES (elemental damage on weapons, for starters.)
