Lots of good characters in those posts. Glad they're top 20. Looks like two of my top ten are in the real top ten. Doubt either will get first, but we'll see!

Nope. You can actually beat the game with just Setzer, Edgar and Celes. Only requirements. Terra does not join automatically, though she does appear in the ending regardless.

Yeah, if you don't recruit Terra, she flies over to where the final battle is for the ending sequence but you can't use her. Think about how silly it would be if you could since you wouldn't get a chance to equip her or learn anything from WoR espers.

The recent winner of SMFFFC is the first of our Top 10. Barret is the leader of his own AVALANCHE cell, and he is fighting to protect the Planet. Not just from some all-powerful being, but from corporate greed bleeding the planet dry. You gonna stand there and pretend you can't hear the planet crying out in pain? I know you can! Barret was the first black playable character in Final Fantasy. And he's awesome from the get go. First, he has a gun for an arm which is pretty awesome on its own, especially in a series where guns weren't exactly the tools of heroes before. He's also an eco-warrior fighting to protect the planet. He's a good example of positive masculinity. And he's a good father to Marlene as well. Barret isn't just awesome though, he's also downright hilarious at times. I mean did you see him in that sailor suit? And c'mon, if you played the remake and heard him hum the victory jingle, you had to have at least smiled. He's also got a tragic backstory that makes him relatable and it's easy to understand why he is the way he is. He also cursed like a sailor before Cid Highwind came around (in the same game, no less). All that &^#$# pizza. One of the first characters introduced in Final Fantasy VII, he definitely makes an impression from the beginning.

Sephiroth is one of the most popular video game villains, if not the most popular. On gamefaqs, he's basically the Link of villains. Nobody else really comes close unless it's a meme. And it's easy to understand why. Badass longcoat, silver hair, and a sword so long you can only assume he's compensating for something. Not to mention not one, but two kickass themes. He definitely has his haters, but he's also got legions of fans. Not only does he appear as a bonus boss in Kingdom Hearts (one of the hardest in the game!), but he's also playable in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. When they announced him in Smash, you knew it was him from the first two chords of One Winged Angel. Before One Winged Angel, video game music was... well it was simple. For the most part there weren't vocals. For the time, it was revolutionary. And of course there are SPOILERS. Just saying "Spoilers" with Final Fantasy VII makes anyone who's played the game instantly know what you're talking about. (Spoilers for FF IV and V and VII below) And Aerith's death is particularly notable because of not only how brutal it is, but how senseless it was. Sure, Tellah and Galuf gave their lives fighting Golbez and X-Death. But they were old. They were fighting. Aerith was knelt in prayer. She was young. She didn't even put up a fight. And Sephiroth killed her anyway.

Yay good showing for Barret.

But yes there is something that feels right about him getting booted right as the top ten starts.

...maybe Aerith is destined for a second place finish!

Rydia is a summoner from Mist, and for what begins as a child character who's mother is killed in the first half hour of the game (by the main character no less!) she's not annoying at all. But it's not as if she just gets over her mother's death either. It still has lingering effects (including some on gameplay!) As a child, Rydia is surprisingly mature for her age. She understands the threat facing them, and even knocks some sense into some of the adult party members. Then later in the game we get adult Rydia's entrance and it is... pretty badass. Especially for a female character. She saves Cecil and company's ass from the fire, and gives Golbez his first defeat in the entire game. Tellah may have give him a bit of a tap, but Rydia shows just why Golbez was afraid of the summoners of Mist and wanted them wiped out. Rydia is also one of the highest damage dealers in Final Fantasy IV, though she loses her ability to use White Magic. Also, she uses a Whip in battle which is pretty awesome. And she has green hair, not blonde or some other color they decided green stood for (Looking at you, Terra!) She is, with good reason, the most popular Final Fantasy IV character. And the second highest rated character from the 16 bit era.

Happy with Barret making the top 10.

Rikku is a bubbly, energetic Al-bhed girl who becomes one of Yuna's guardians. Rikku is one of the first characters Tidus encounters when he first arrives in Spira. She's adept at taking care of Machina, and she's one of the only characters who doesn't really believe in the church of Yevon. She wants to stop Yuna's pilgrimage, but goes along with her anyway. Rikku has a lot of internal conflict, because she wants to defeat sin too, just... she wants to find another way. She challenges the beliefs of the others in ways that probably drives the conclusion they reach in the end. She's also Yuna's cousin. She's also one of the main cast of Final Fantasy X-2 along with Yuna and Paine. She's also scared to death of Lightning (meanwhile, we're all just scared of ever having to do the lightning dodging mini game ever again...) She speaks plain English, but also speaks Al Bhed sometimes, which is a cipher language you can learn over the course of the game. Upon learning that Yuna is going to die at the end of the pilgrimage is a poignant moment delivered by what is the most upbeat character in the game, which makes it all the more serious.

Auron was a guardian for Braska alongside Tidus's father, Jecht. And for once, we get to see parts of it rather than just hearing about it through recorded spheres which was a very nice touch. We get to see a younger, inexperienced Auron and how he became the 'legendary guardian' that he is revered as. Of course the flashbacks are nice too. It gives more depth to his character. Auron is a bit of a hardass, but a complete badass for sure. Playing through the game for a second time though brings a lot of new light to everything he does and says. Especially given the twist. Auron being dead all along was a nice touch, and one that didn't feel forced. And when he is sent in the end, brings a tear to my eye every time. And the fact he attacked Lady Yunalesca? Yeah, that's why people like him. Why wouldn't you? Auron is the most popular character from Final Fantasy X, and the most popular character of the PS2 era. Nobody listed him as their favorite, but he was usually pretty high up there for most. Oddly enough, he ends up in sixth, which was his highest rank.

How many boys first video game crush was Tifa Lockhart? Tifa isn't just eye candy, though. She kicks all sorts of ass. And despite what you might think, she's also a bit shy. She was Cloud's childhood crush, and we get to see their history play out in flashbacks. She's also a bartender at 7th Heaven, and a member of Avalanche. Best of all? She's one of the potential Gold Saucer dates. Playing FF7 back then, I think Tifa was always my gold saucer date. I wasn't aiming for her, I just never took her out of my party. It was Tifa/Cloud/Barret all the way. When she plays the damsel in distress role, she's not really in distress so much as she put herself in the situation on purpose like with Don Corneo. She also has an awesome slap fight with Scarlet, that I can't wait to see in part 3. Tifa also has a really fun limit break with her slots. We see her character expanded a bit in Remake and Rebirth, with more details being added to her story. And let's face it, she's one of THE Sex Symbols in gaming, up there with Samus Aran and Lara Croft and Chun Li. It's not all she is, though. And that's what makes her as popular as she is. Otherwise Dead or Alive would probably be a lot more popular. In Advent Children and Kingdom Hearts she was voiced by Rachel Leigh Cook known better for being in She's All That, and in the remake is voiced by Britt Baron who was in GLOW.

Squall comes across as a broody lone wolf child soldier who is 'too cool' for feelings. But that's not who he really is. Squall is afraid of losing people, so he distances himself from them. He doesn't want to feel the pain of loss. And it's a very real fear as teenagers, which makes me wonder if I'd have connected as well to Squall as I did if I played Final Fantasy VIII for the first time as an adult instead of as a teenager. Squall is very much the professional child soldier, and it's probably why he's chosen to lead his own team. He does, however, end up falling in love with his client (though they met before she hired SeeD). Squall is one of those characters who cares about their people, but they won't say it. His backstory explains his character really well. A lot of video game characters just have personalities, but Squall has a reason behind his personality. Over the course of the game, Squall develops as a character. In the end, he becomes the voice of reassurance. "I'll be here. Waiting for you. If you come, you'll find me." It's no surprise that most people's favorite Final Fantasy VIII character is Squall. He's the character with the most screen time, the most development (though some of his best scenes are missable), and because he's always in the party, they didn't have to write around him in case the player didn't take him along. Also let's be honest: the jacket doesn't hurt. It might be seen as tryhard today, but back then, it was an awesome style. Damn, I wanted that jacket. Squall also appears in Kingdom Hearts, where he's voiced by none other than Angel himself, David Boreanaz, another broody hero. Excellent choice by Square. Now he's voiced by Doug Erholtz (Who voiced one of my favorite villains, but nobody played that game. Okay not nobody, but not nearly enough people dammit.) Squall is also one of three characters to receive two first place votes.

I have not played VIII so that's why the number of lists is 17 for practically everyone in the top 30 and then only 16 for the VIII main party
