Fran is a Viera, and is the Chewbacca to Balthier's Han. She's the only non-human playable character of Final Fantasy XII. Fran is viewed as an outcast by other Viera. Probably because she has a vowel in her name. (Okay Jote does too.. there goes that theory). Viera were first introduced in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, and were brought back for Final Fantasy XII and Final Fantasy XIV. Viera have a very distinctive accent.

Ol' Trusty Rusty. Knight of Alexandria, and leader of the Knights of Pluto. Also a fan of Gyshal Pickles, but not so much of Ooglops or Zidane. Steiner has a bit of a mixed reception as a character, with a number of staunch fans, but a few detractors as well. Steiner sort of represents the Fighter class from the original Final Fantasy game. He has a very black and white world view, but he's also staunchly loyal to Princess Garnet, including to the point that he will go against her wishes to protect her. While Steiner doesn't like Zidane (at least at first) he does like and respect Vivi, and the two can work together to use Sword Magic in battle.

Kupo! Moogles were introduced in Final Fantasy III, and have had a part in every game since except for Final Fantasy IV. But Mog himself is the first playable Moogle in the mainline series. Mog is a human-loving, fast-talking, street-smart slam-dancing moogle. He uses a series of dances he can learn by fighting in battles in different terrain. Mog is kind of the mascot of Final Fantasy VI, and even appears in the North American commercial for the game where he fights a bunch of monsters, saying "Next!" Mog doesn't play a major part in the story, but he's still cute and the race has played a part in the series for almost as long as Chocobos.

Wiegraf is the leader of the Death Corps (which is a cooler name than Corpse Brigade imo) and the brother of Miluda (who does not appear on this list). Wiegraf despises the nobility and specifically Ramza for killing his sister. Wiegraf is a bit of a badass, as his Death Corps were a match for the other Knights loyal to the nobility. What I think makes Wiegraf so compelling in his role is that his motivations are entirely understandable and sympathetic in a way that goes beyond what most villains have. Wiegraf could very well be the hero of another story, had things turned out a bit differently. And he's part of what makes Final Fantasy Tactics a fantastic game.

Oh no my first top 10 to drop! So far from my top 20 I've lost:

7: Adelbert Steiner (Final Fantasy IX)
17: Ultros (Final Fantasy VI)

Steiner deserves more love guys. I figured Ultros wouldn't do great, but I thought Steiner had a chance to make top 50 maybe. There's probably two other top 20 characters of mine that aren't going to make top 50 but I imagine the rest will be safe.

Kursed SeeD! For some reason, Ultimecia says her C's with a K. Ultimecia is the main villain of Final Fantasy VIII, seeking to Kompress Time. She's technically the first main villain of the series that is definitively female (with Cloud of Darkness only appearing Female). Her reasons for wanting to compress time are explored a little more in Dissidia, where her character is fleshed out a bit more. Also you can't talk about Ultimecia without the infamous R is U theory. It's not one I subscribe to, but it's still an interesting theory. Ultimecia is a pretty solid villain who's behind most of the events of the game. In the end, she puts everything into motion, passing her sorceress powers on to Edea, who will in turn be taken control by the earlier version of her, already doomed to fail.

Rude is another member of the Turks (and a member of a bar for bald men). He's Reno's best friend, and has a crush on Tifa. Much like Reno, Rude is a bit of a punch-clock villain. Much like Raijin, he refuses to hit female characters (or will do minimal damage to them to incapacitate them). He also cares a lot for his fellow Turks, looking after them (though often being annoyed by Elena). Much like other characters, he gets a little more characterization and story in the Remake continuity.

Edge is a Ninja of Eblan, and joins the party late. He has an intense hatred for the fiend of fire, Rubicante due to what happened to his Kingdom. There are some divided opinions on Edge. With some thinking he's a cool Ninja guy, and others thinking he's creepy for hitting on Rydia. Edge is able to throw weapons at enemies, including shurikens. Edge also learns some Ninja Magic, including one that he learns through his emotions over the course of the story. Edge's real name is Edward, making him one of two playable Edwards in the game. Which is kind of a weird choice, but it's a pretty common name in real life. Of the playable cast, he's one of the only ones who never leaves the party. He also never sacrifices himself. He's decent comic relief at times, reacting to betrayals a little harsher than the rest of the cast.

Rude's big scene in Rebirth (the bald bar) was incredible.

Cannot believe Ultimecia made it this high. Thought nobody cared about her. I kinda get it due to the Edea stuff, but eh.

Alisaie ranks well above her twin brother. I have only barely met them in Final Fantasy XIV, so I can't comment much on that. It's a little weird she ranks so much higher, though that only makes me more intrigued by the characters given the varying rankings the two received. Speaking of Final Fantasy XIV for those who want to play, I believe they are offering 96 hours free until February 6th.

Rosa is a character I have quite the affinity for myself. But it's understandable why some people don't get her. She arrives as a character who's already developed, in a relationship that comes developed already. The story of her and Cecil is one that was told before the game even begins. But still, she's a pretty awesome white mage who can dole out physical damage very well. And she's a great healer on top of that. Rosa sets out at the beginning of the game to follow Cecil, but winds up getting sick. She has a kindness to her that allows her to connect with young Rydia, and a loyalty to Cecil. When told to stay behind, Rosa refuses and continues anyway -- because who will heal the party when they're hurt without her? That's what I'm asking, Rosa! I think it's actually kind of refreshing to have a pre-existing relationship rather than one that develops as the story goes. Though I do think it could have used some room for growth.

Elena is the most popular of the Turks and is also their newest member. She looks up to her older co-workers, but takes issue with how casual they are about the job. She takes it very seriously. Though she can be a bit naive, and lets things slip she shouldn't. Like most of the characters, she received a bit more development in the remake continuity, which likely helped increase her popularity a bit. Elena also has a nice little subplot in Wutai, and an unrequited crush on Tseng.

Gilgamesh is a recurring villain from Final Fantasy V. He has one of the best themes in the game. He's also more of a comic relief villain than a serious threat, similar to Ultros from Final Fantasy VI. Gilgamesh appears in various other titles in the series, and I believe it's the same Gilgamesh, which makes him the most recurring singular character in the series (though that's not saying too much, given there aren't that many). He appears in Final Fantasy VI, the VII Remake universe, VIII, IX, XI, XII, XIII, XIV, XV, and Type-0. But he's originally from Final Fantasy V.

Whoever ranked Gilgamesh 151 is cold blooded, damn.

Seymour is a major villain in Final Fantasy X. I remember the first time seeing him, and I thought "Well, this guy is obviously evil." He just has one of those looks where you know he's a villain just by the way he looks. They say don't judge a book by its cover, but when the cover reads "EVIL" you can probably judge. His voice is sinister, but also sexy. They did a good job with Seymour, and all of his boss fights were memorable. And he had a pretty engaging backstory. I'm surprised not to see him get a bit more appreciation.

Agrias is a character I'll contend probably should have been on The List. Though if she had been, I wonder if she'd have done much better, or not quite as well. Nobody absolutely loved Agrias. she wasn't in anyone's Top 10 or even Top 20. But she's also the one character who got the most votes out of all the characters who weren't on The List. Agrias is a Holy Knight from Final Fantasy Tactics. She doesn't play a huge role in the game, but she plays a sizable role in the early game. Then, like many others, after joining the party she's kind of an afterthought. I'd love to see what Square Enix could have done with FFT with the budget and the time. Because the writing that's there is incredible.

Chicken Wuss! Zell is our lowest first place finisher out of the thirteen characters who received first place votes. He's also the only character to receive both a first and last place ranking. I'll admit I don't understand the hate for Zell. Did Seifer vote!? I think he's 'whatever' at worst, and his most egregious thing is that he loves Hot Dogs. Like... does he even know what's in those?! Zell kind of grew on me when I put him on my party to go to Balamb Garden, and just kind of stuck with me from there. I feel like splitting the parties Zell/Rinoa/Squall and Quistis/Selphie/Irvine just makes too much sense, and I think maybe ONE time I did something different. But I digress. His favorite food actually differs between versions, with it being flavored bread in Japanese, and a Bretzel in French.

A world-class gambler, and owner of the world's only airship. He looks a bit like how Sephiroth might look if he were a 16 bit sprite. Setzer is a bit of a rogue. Which is the type of character a lot of people like. The only problem is... how much of a charming rogue he is can vary on your interpretation of his introductory scene. As a kid, I was under the impression that him kidnapping Maria was sort of an arrangement they had. As an adult, I started to realize that's probably not the case. Especially given how quickly he's willing to marry Celes. Then again, his reaction to being conned is pretty light, which makes him easier to forgive. Though it's a bit creepy to wonder what might have happened if not for the two-sided coin. Setzer also appears in Kingdom Hearts 2.

I'm surprised he did so well without me to be honest. I'm not sure who all submitted lists, but I feel like he's missing two or maybe three that would have boosted him higher. Freya is a playable character from Final Fantasy IX. She is a Burmecian, which are a race of anthropomorphic rats. She is also a Dragoon, and is the only character that is left-handed (though that is pretty meaningless except graphically). When Zidane meets her, he gets her name wrong several times. Though you can actually name her one of those names, meaning Zidane could technically be getting it right! Freya is searching for her lost love, Sir Fratley. Her story is a bit tragic. Her hometown is destroyed and the man she loves has amnesia and doesn't remember her.

Noctis is the Prince of Lucis, and is engaged to Lunafreya the oracle. He's also the main character of Final Fantasy XV. He is accompanied on his journey by his friends and retainers on a boys-road trip. He (and the rest of the cast) look more like a boy band than a Prince and his bodyguards. For me, Noctis was kind of 'meh' until I actually beat the game. One of his final lines in the game "Off my chair Jester, the King sits there." had him grow on me a bit.

Lulu is the goth girl of Final Fantasy X. She uses dolls to fight, which is pretty cool. Especially since many of her dolls are mascots of the series. Lulu is one of Yuna's guardians, and she takes her job very seriously. Before being Yuna's guardian, she escorted two other summoners on their journey, making her very experienced. Nomura gave her so many belts, as a test for the designers to see if they could get the number of belts she has right in every cut scene. But the developers worked around that, often showing Lulu only from the waist up.

Cyan is the retainer of Doma, and a playable character in Final Fantasy VI. He speaks in archaic expressions, but despite that has a fondness for machinery. His kingdom is poisoned, and his family are killed by Kefka. He's also one of the older playable characters in the series who fits his age a bit better at 50. Cyan has a Swrd Tech that allows him to charge up a power, and use it. Depending on how long you wait, you get different results. Cyan is a samurai, which you'd think would make him a bit more appreciated. Cyan has good motivations to hate the empire, some of the best in the game.

Topic 1 was where people submitted who they thought should be ranked. There was a bit of discussion, and I limited it to 160 characters. Then in the second topic, I posted the list, but allowed people to work outside the list if they chose, but they could not exceed 160 characters.

Fang is a playable character from Final Fantasy XIII, and is a l'cie. She doesn't remember her focus, but she and Vanille have a history together. Fang is from Pulse, which makes her an enemy of Cocoon. She is the last party member to join the party. Fang is stubborn, sarcastic, and very independent. Many consider she and Vanille a couple. Fang has a bit of a mix of fans and detractors, much like most of the FFXIII cast. Her Eidolon is Bahamut, which is definitely one of the coolest Eidolons.

Lightning is the somewhat divisive protagonist of the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy. She reached the rank of Sgt. in the Guardian Corps, and is the older sister of Serah. She's a bit cold and detached at first, and blames herself for being unable to protect her sister. Though she also blames Snow. Her Eidolon is Odin. She's also the main character of Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns. She's also a bit of a fashion icon in the real world, at least among video game characters.

Cindy is in a way the first female Cid, and the youngest Cid to date. In Japan she goes by the name Cidonie. She's also the highest rank Final Fantasy XV character on this list. Cindy is one of the mechanics in the game, and serves as a bit of fanservice. Cindy's parents were killed by Daemons, and she was raised by her grandfather, Cid. She's optimistic and friendly, and though she has many admirers (even among the playable characters) she's married to her job. She will upgrade the Regalia for you over the course of the game, provided you have the parts. She also will tow the car for you anytime you need it. Cindy also has a skin in Blue Reflection and a skin in minecraft.

Final Fantasy VII's Cid is the last character to fail to make the Top 50. Cid is another Highwind who plays similar to a Dragoon (though he isn't quite one). Cid curses like a sailor, at least in the original version. His character in the Remake continuity has had people divided. He doesn't feel like a Cid who'd say "Sit down, shut up and drink your goddamn tea." Cid had always dreamed of going to space, but that dream was ruined when Shinra cut the space program. He is a bit abusive toward Shera, his assistant, though we have yet to see how the remake continuity will treat their relationship. His Airship the Highwind is probably the most well known airship in the series.

Lightning should be far lower. but I'll accept not making the top 50.

Lightning and Fang both losing out to Cindy is unfortunate.

Freya is the highest elimination of mine so far at 13. But I was surprised to see she got a 3 as well.

Also, on the subject of Seymour, I apparently wasn't his highest ranker. I had Seymour at 17/160, which means someone else put him even higher to get that 14th spot.
