i was surprised more people didn't submit lists, given the SMFFC craze here. i'm guessing people wanted to be very exact with their rankings, which would take a long time for 160 characters. i just threw one together in 10 minutes based on gut feelings.

Yeah, I was very hesitant to submit a list because of limited experience or a long absence from some of the games. It felt unfair to rank characters I knew little about or remembered little of.

personally the initial deadline was too long so I did the classic "I have plenty of time!" and then never actually got to it. Ironically I think if we had less time I might have actually finished it

Because 160 was pushing it for most people. 250+ would be OVERKILL.

I more meant we should have just ranked 100 or 160 or whatever out of a list of 250+ to remove bias in the lists.

why do you hate Vivi

Well yes Terra but you were the most sane voter in general it feels like in this!

Vivi is the only good character in FF9 other than Amarant (who the fanbase hates) and Kuja (who in spite of being good is imo overrated so knocking him down a peg is fine)

That is to say I'm ok with the collateral damage!

Darn you past Suprak for your Galuf ranking. I remembered him being "fine/pretty good" but nothing particularly special. I just replayed FFV thought and he should be like 100 spots higher.

I really need to replay VIII, IX, and X because that is all 15+ year old thoughts and I could be similarly way wrong on some people.

Galuf and Ghido would have been lower for me if I hadn't replayed V recently. (Still hate Bartz though)

Aw I like Bartz. He's a bit bland but still better than most of the protagonists prior to VI.

Replay did cement Krile as my least favorite of the main V characters. I still like her, but she's less charming than everyone else and it doesn't help she replaces someone I vastly prefer.

Bartz is great

Krile's biggest sin is the shoes she fills. She's not really that bad particularly compared to other "kid characters" of the time but probably gets a lot of hate (from me included) just for that.

I think FF9 is clearly a rung or three below the other three golden era FFs, with it being collectively lower than the sum of the parts it is aping.

Add to that that I've always thought Vivi was aggressively mid from the first time I played it in 2000, seeing him somehow always held up as the pinnacle of the characterization has always irked me. Which would normally be tracking for lower end of the list finish, but Vivi broke the cardinal rule - He won twice. Now he will be forever be in my shithouse. His aggressive midness has now become a full blown ire for me. Somewhat unfair? Maybe, but that's how it works in my brainplace.

I definitely agree Vivi isn't a super deep character.

He's just super cute and has something going on beyond that. That's about as far as my fandom goes

Definitely see how the contest can taint perception of a character though. That's me and Edea Lee. Edea Lee is aggressively mid for me but I'd probably rank her in the 150s (if she was rankable) cause her stats are too high and her fans in this contest dunk on the far superior Agnes Oblige too much.

I mean there aren't a ton of super deep characters in the series (Squall is the deepest of course imhotbqh)

But Vivi has a combination of cool design, cool abilities (especially working with Steiner), being a generally good dude to everyone, and having a sympathetic story arc. Everything about him does what it's designed to do.

I'm the last person that would like a character simply cause they're cute and I think the handling of Vivi's character arc is just really well done.

From the jump his perspective is fun to follow (that's the cute part), but he's so well integrated into the plot it's crazy. I don't think there's a non-protagonist/antagonist that feels as fully developed and secretly the pathos/ethos of the story like Vivi. I think he's one of the most impressive characters from a writing standpoint.

That said, carry on FFD. We cannot abide double winners

I also don't really get why people are connecting this list to SMFFFC so much. What do they have to do with each other?

Vivi might be mid but the rest of the FF9 cast is so bad he seems top tier character by comparison!

It happens across things. I love Master Chief a lot more because of GameFAQs contests. I love X-Death a lot more because I ran him for Treasurer as a joke write-in in High School. All sorts of stuff not just smfffc this applies to.

Cloud being my main in smash moved him up to #2. Sephiroth also got a big bump but I never got around to playing him as much.

I may be a little more attached to Ghido because of the past 4 SMFFFC contests

Cloud and Squall have been my favorites for a long time.

Only game that really changed my mind about anyone was probably Dissidia, which moved Cloud of Darkness and Ultimecia up a bit.

I haven't really let contest stuff affect my feelings about anyone or anything

I'll say FFIX is overrated to high heaven on B8 while still saying it's a really good game

Dissidia Ultimecia is fantastic. The time stop scene is the best in the game.

Yay for Aerith! We named our youngest daughter after Aerith because I love the name and the character. Celes used to be my favorite, though. Glad to see her do well too.

A reminder that this is one of the best Final Fantasy scenes of all time. And it's in a game I have never played.

Enjoyed following the reveal. If I'd put a list in I would have definitely had Cloud and Aerith right near the top (Yuna #1 though).

I don't think FFVII cast would have 5 of the top 10 if this had been run in 2019. It's probably my favourite now that I've spent so much time with them across Remake and Rebirth (not a hue fan of Sephiroth compared to his character in the original, but the core party members are great). Helps that they're the only FF games since XIII I've really connected with properly.
