https://www.forbes.com/sites/mollybohannon/2024/12/19/suspected-unitedhealthcare-ceo-shooter-reportedly-facing-federal-charges-of-murder-stalking/

Luigi Mangionethe 26-year-old suspected killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompsonis reportedly facing federal charges of murder, multiple outlets reported Thursday, a move that may allow prosecutors to seek the death penalty. An unsealed federal criminal complaint showed Mangione is being charged with murder through use of a firearm, two stalking charges and a firearm offense, CNN reported. Federal prosecutors reportedly claimed jurisdiction in the case because of Mangiones travel in interstate commerce and use of interstate facilities, referring to him travelling to New York and him allegedly using a cell phone and internet to plan the shooting, CNN reported. The federal criminal complaint gives more insight into the notebook that was found on Mangione at the time of his arrest: Mangione reportedly wrote about his intent to wack a CEO of an insurance company at its investor conference and wrote, this investor conference is a true windfall ... and most importantly the message becomes self evident, according to the Associated Press.

Mangione already faces weapons-related charges in Pennsylvaniawhere he was recognized and arrestedand first- and second-degree murder charges in New York where the alleged crime was committed, but where the death penalty is not available. Whether federal prosecutors will seek the death penalty. The death penalty is not an option in New York nor Pennsylvania, and The New York Times reported any decision about the death penalty will likely be made by the Justice Department after President-elect Donald Trump is in office.

Not exactly thrilled that they're (from what I'm reading and I could be wrong) going over the state to claim jurisdiction in part because he used the Internet and a cellphone.

That doesn't seem like a good precedent.

Does this make you feel better about yourself? You don't seem very happy.

Most people have a negative view of Mangione. Most people are not gearing up to shoot CEOs, and most people would dislike it if they would. The vast majority of this is nothing but people cheering it online while not putting themselves at any sort of risk.

Another part of the social contract is that we shouldn't have an entire industry that is a massively profitable middleman between patients and health care providers, where their profits go up every time they deny a claim.

See the thing is, for the social contract to be valid, both sides have to hold up their end.

The ruling class ceased abiding by their half of the deal a long time ago. Or maybe you haven't noticed them killing us with impunity whether it be by poisoning our land, our water, the entire planet, or denying us access to healthcare. The social contract is no longer valid.

For the working class to continue abiding by it would just be to hamstring themselves. Eat the rich.

If there's one thing about LightSnake, it's that he has never shown any ability to understand this breakdown in the "established order." Understanding that doesn't automatically lead to supporting vigilante murders, but I think it would lead to very different stances than what he's taken on this issue and many others.

The people destroying our lives are counting on our continued belief in the social contract as if the purpose of wealth isn't to rewrite it on more favorable terms or opt out unilaterally. But of course, we've gotta keep up our part and shouldn't rock the boat. That would be unserious of us.

You know, there's a whole lot of history to draw on that shows one constant: when killing starts, it usually doesn't stick to the people who deserve it and a whole lot of people will have very, very differing definitions of who deserves it.

Yeah, I'm not supporting a mentally disturbed murderer who chose to shoot one bad guy, nor am I confident in the capacity of social maladjusts to actually put themselves at any risk. I see nothing but "Yeah, it's all gonna come to a head" by people who get crippling anxiety dealing with DoorDash customer service, or whose boldness is insulting people from computer screens.

Just say what you really mean and admit how you want to see the established order, Zell. There'd be more dignity than this in trying to have it both ways. Or just go and organize a revolution, already.
