Oh damn I thought this was releasing tomorrow.

Everything I'm seeing looks like fun and it's releasing with 33 characters which is more than OW1 ended up with so yeah I'm definitely trying this one.

I'll check it out because it does look cool, but I really wish it wasn't a free to play game; that's a large part of what killed overwatch in the first place

If a game starts out as free-to-play I do think it's more likely to be successful. It didn't work for Overwatch because it's not how it started out. It shifted the focus from what made Overwatch great in the first place whereas Marvel Rivals will already be designed around the F2P model.

If a game has to be F2P then at least they're following the best recent trends

All characters free to play and unlocked immediately
Only cosmetic purchases
If you a buy a battle pass then there's no time limit on unlocking

The only downside is that high quality skins are probably going to be $20-30 but if that's how they have to fund the game I can't really complain.

Also the game being 3rd person means people will actually buy more skins as opposed to Overwatch where you rarely even get to see the skin you bought.

This is the perfect game for me to resist major microtransactions, since I think with rare exceptions most Marvel alternate outfits in general across the brand are worse than the standards. I'm sure they'll do some wholly original stuff too, but we'll see.

Meanwhile if this were a DC game I would be getting absolutely fucking obliterated by the Green Lantern Corps.

Also I would like to point out that Overwatch turned to shit before it went F2P.

I quit that game shortly after Sigma came out, like 450 hours or whatever, and can safely safe the game got worse with every single patch they released since it launched up to that point. Every character I liked to play wasn't fun to play anymore.

The F2P model they're running with here sounds pretty solid and consumer-friendly on paper, though I'm more than a little concerned with how much they've seemed to avoid showing what the actual game looks like beyond hero highlight clips with targets just standing around throughout all their marketing. Apparently people who played the beta really liked it though? Well, it's free and drops in a few hours so I suppose it's not long before I can see for myself!

Yeah people who played the beta seemed to enjoy it overall. Definitely interested in trying this out!

The steampunk cowboy Rocket Raccoon outfit is pretty cool tho.

They said all characters will be free. The only pay elements are cosmetics.

I'll probably be the lone dissenter here but Overwatch only got better when it went F2P. The game balance is better, there's more content being added faster than it ever was before, and the underlying fun of the game is still the same. I get the kneejerk reactions to the terrible decisions Blizzard made, but the game itself is fine.

I never even tried F2P Overwatch itself because of the contact information shit.

Yeah there's plenty of streams online of streamers playing in advanced access. It looks fun but hectic like Overwatch.

I started streaming OW2 and then found out Rivals came out, DL'd the game while still streaming OW2 and just switched over lol

Its interesting, I can't put my finger on it but it feels like something is missing from it. It just doesn't jump out to me.

also, theres no role queue so you are at the complete mercy of randos picking healer or not, which is what I hated about OW as well until RQ happened. Yea I usually flex but that also usually means I pick healer all of the time too against my will, on top of running the risk of healers switching off to DPS if you DO get them. thats the only gripe I have the game though

they are making it seem possible to earn the BP for free but it looks super steep. 4k purple currency. I have 200 so far. Blue currency unlocks shit at the shop and gold currency is purchased with real money, then can be converted to blue currency

we'll see if they get anything worth while

Wolverine has a spray of half a heart with the other heart implying to be deadpool's half. I mean, there was no doubt he would get added in eventually but I found that funny that they had to drop a hint

Played for a few hours with a full stack of six and it was pretty darn fun, actually! Character kits are all over the place but generally seem cool and there were multiple heroes I really clicked with and enjoyed playing. Squirrel Girl and Wolverine especially were pretty much instantly appealing to me. I think the really big thing for this game will be seeing what happens after launch since Netease has... not the best track record with managing this kind of stuff, but out of the gate it definitely feels like there's a ton of heart here even if much of the design isn't terribly original.

The game lacks weight. Nothing really feels like it has any impact, it's subtle but odd. The Hulk smacks should not feel the same as Peter's punches. It betrays it's Netease roots.

Tried playing with a group but way too often one person would get stuck on the loading screen, get kicked, and then banned for 5 minutes which got too annoying.

This was an issue back in the beta, so it's really disappointing it hasn't been fixed.

this happened to a team member. the crazy thing is that the game RECOGNIZES it

it said something like "This player is not loading in properly" or something.
then finally that they were kicked out after a bit

...if they recognize it, then why not fix it lol

Day one main.

I'm maining Scarlet Witch because she has Moira's beam and Pharah's rockets. Two of my OW mains wrapped in one.

Yeah something about this game just feels slightly off but I'll give it more time.

It's annoying that it has the same issue as OW where characters either die in 0.1 seconds or they're completely invincible from heals.

Magik is fun as hell but I'm bad with her

Really enjoyed what I've played so far. Just hit level 10 before work.

Favourites are Winter Soldier, Hulk, Star Lord, and Jeff.

Liking what Ive played so far. It can be pretty chaotic, but its also a lot of fun. Enjoying Venom, Luna Snow and Mantis. DPS wise I havent tried too many and went up against people who felt really good when I did so I didnt really get to learn much

Oh yeah as for the healers, Adam Warlock is quite fun. Mostly play Magneto for vanguard, but idk if he's hitting the right chords with me

It does seem to fall into some awful microtransaction habits. $5 just to change your name, $15-30 per costume with hardly any way to unlock currency.

By my count the most you can get from the Battlepass is like 200 credits, 300 if you get the luxury battle battlepass, and just that seem like it would take weeks of playing, when the minimum for most costumes is 1600

The gameplay is alright but like there's so little incentive to level and complete challenges when there's basically no reward for doing so

No Battlepass XP for just playing games (that is, not solely from Challenges) is a bit of a bummer.

....Uh, well, that kinda depends actually, but still.

Gotta pay to name change in WoW too, no? I've definitely seen it in several games.

Games will often either make you pay or won't let you change it at all.

Like yeah it's egregious, but in this case that's actually the point. They want it to be a gross price so people won't a use name changing to try and talk or grief specific users. It's intentional disincentivation.

There are so many characters I want to try out still, but so far Im enjoying Luna, Mantis & Rocket for Strategists, Venom & Peni for Vanguards and havent really messed around with any Duelist enough to get a feel of them. I had no idea what I was doing with Peni though and the game I tried Thor, Cap and Hulk I didnt really feel like I was a threat to the enemies at any point
