we will be lucky if we ever find fellow Milky Way civilizations. But traveling to another galaxy is probably too hard for us. And when the galaxies move too far away from each other, it will be impossible. Someday every galaxy in the universe will be too far from every other, to ever travel between them. So we will probably never even know what's going on outside the milky way. Maybe in some distant galaxy, some really cool shit is happening. But we will never find out

Chances are that there are, were and will be intelligent life elsewhere in the universe but it seems a certainty that we will never meet it.

Even just within our own galaxy the distances to other star systems with potentially habitable worlds are crazy huge. I looked up how long it would take to get to Alpha Centauri (the closest star system to ours):

"According to NASA, the Discovery space shuttle (which was retired in 2011) travels at around 17,500 mph (28,000 km/h). Even moving constantly at this speed, it would take over 148,000 years to reach Alpha Centauri."

It took me a while to figure out why physicists are so hopeful about discovering new physics. It's because the current Standard Model is depressing as fuck and predicts we will never have FTL travel. Every new observation that verifies the Standard Model is another blow to the dream of traveling to the ends of the universe.

It's because we aren't ready for the dialogues to come and haven't innovated.

Us. Like literally. It's us. For all intents and purposes, we are at the center of the universe. Because the universe is bigger than what we can see (our "Observable" Universe). So everything we can possibly ever know or interact with is contained in a sphere about 93 billion light-years across, centered on Earth.

Every place is the centre of its own observable universe.

We may already have, but don't recognize it. All life is not necessarily "life as we know it."

honestly, they would probably use the star trek protocols of not interfering with a race that can't explore the galaxy or something like that. We are not advanced enough to join the universe. Had this one coworker suggested that it's because we are violent and barbaric so they refuse to say shit to us.

Theres definitely other advanced planets out there and a lot of them probably dont want to interact with us. And why would they?

I dont need to meet aliens or even go to other galaxies, but Would love to live long enough to see space travel in our own solar system as common.

The potential sample size is large enough that there -must-, either now or in the past, be other intelligent life in the cosmos, somewhere. It happened here, after all, and it defies reason that our circumstances are truly one of a kind as opposed to simply rare

As to if that life survives to a point where it could be spacefaring? That's difficult and cosmic/geologic timescales make it easy to lose things in the cracks (all human history is less than an eyeblink in the planets lifespan which itself is an eyeblink in the cosmos)

In any case it is unlikely, with our current understanding of physics and technology, that we will ever meet theoretical other species, or colonize other worlds - simply a matter of the time it would take to reach them, to reach any earth-like planet, is too long to be feasible and even without knowing what to look for we'd have seen -something- amid the constant background noise if something were reaching to us (barring a theoretical alien species that operates entirely outside the context we know such that we wouldn't go "huh, weird radiation", which seems unlikely)

More than likely if we ever have a new science technology breakthrough or something allowing ftl travel or utilization of wormholes, it will be given to us, like in interstellar. Either by our future selves somehow or another race.

Also, Andromeda, our neighbor galaxy, isn't moving away, it's gonna crash right into us probably disrupting quite a lot of celestial bodies.

Despite their appearances, the vast majority of a galaxy is empty space, so most stars in the Milky Way-Andromeda collision will not interact with or collide with one another.
