B8 is pretty much my only source of internet and I don't watch trailers/tv with commercials. This would have been a hell of a surprise!
Spiderman Homecoming made me decide to drop all trailers and previews because damn how much more amazing would that movie had been if you hadn't know who was all going to show up?

Marvel just seems to love spoiling the everloving shit out of their own films to the point that I find it impossible to care about them. (Though lately the main reason for it being impossible to care is they're actual uninteresting trash most of the time - waiting to hear if Deadpool changed that but realistically that's a one-off either way.)

I mean, you'll see this on the poster when you go to see the movie in the theater. Not really something you can avoid.

Anwyay, this is definitely gonna be an alternate universe thing, like John Krasinski as Mr. Fantastic. Guessing we'll get another Dr. Doom from our universe as well.

My initial instinct when I heard about this is it has to be a joke.

What do you mean? John Krasinski played Reed Richards, too, but he's still not going to be in the Fantastic Four movie.

I have been proven wrong by the MCU before but put me in the camp that thinks this is a bad idea.

Hmm I can't imagine them spending time to announce him playing Doom in 2 movies for it to be a swerve. Yeah Krasinski played Reed in MoM and it was a swerve but they didn't hype him up before at comic con either.

There is 0 chance he's playing Doom from the regular universe. The whole point of these phases is building up to a big multiverse threat.

Yeah. Same. It's desperate but I officially "care" again. Will almost certainly see these.

It's most certainly a desperate move, but not an unwise one. Neat idea to bring back a previous hero and cast them as a villain, I'd be down to see that for all of them.

That said, the problems with current MCU have nothing to do with the actors. Writing and direction are the biggest issue and RDJ can't save them in that regard. Russos might be able to, and I certainly have faith in them, but that doesn't mean they'll fix everything.

One can only hope though.

Seems cool. Iron Man is kinda Doom adjacent too so in a multiverse setting I could see it. It's not like they brought back Chris Evans to play him.

I don't know if I'd use the word "desperate" because of Deadpool 3; it's more like "strike while the iron is hot" because on the heels of a well-received and highly successful release, they are trying to build upon this by re-establishing people's good will towards the MCU overall. I realize Deadpool sort of stands alone, even if now it's a technical part of Phase 5, but success is success. Why not try to get people excited in the product again while they're paying attention and happy?

This is exactly the kind of thing I WANTED multiverse stuff to do. The fact that none of the movies in the multiverse phase really used it much aside from Spiderman and MoM was a huge disappointment for me and one of the unsung problems with the arc.

i mean desperate makes sense in that they literally had the actor say he was done, tried to move on from him, and ultimately backtracked with him hard.

but i don't think desperate is the right word considering it's a pretty explicit acknowledgement of failure. they've created no new stars and their biggest TV/streaming success story is a guy who existed over a decade ago. so hey back to the drawing board.

I just want to see a faithfully done Doom by an actor who would probably do better in the role. That's all. There's ways to do Tony Stark but evil that don't need to use Doom for it.

To be fair, we might be unfairly typecasting RDJ. Its entirely possible he has the talent to give a performance that fits Doom and is properly distant from his Tony Stark.

The question shouldn't be about his versatility as a character actor; The Sympathizer and Oppenheimer (as well as old films like Chaplin) definitely prove he has the ranges and the chops to play just about anything put before him.

Yeah if RDJ had been doing something else for 10 years and then did Oppenheimer, I'd be really excited by this casting. That's why I've got mixed feelings - I acknowledge the desperation of it while thinking he's probably going to nail it

Yeah I don't think it's going to be Evil Tony Stark. It might have some similarities to make people think but if it's supposed to be Doom it'll be Doom. I have no doubts in RDJ there.

I mean, RDJ is obviously a talented actor and he's probably going to be really good here. I just think there's probably a lot better options that can channel Doom better. Especially someone younger with a lot of legs. Like nothing about this excites me.

I'm mostly frustrated with how much they've screwed up a lot of villains lately too. The Russo's have the best shot of making it work admittedly, but the MCU has just had so many misses with villains lately it's hard to get excited in general.

tony stark was doom in one of the comics timelines (they switched minds/bodies) so it's not out of the realm of possibility

If anything, I feel like this is a good opportunity for him to prove that he IS a good character actor to a crowd that only knows him from the MCU (though I assume a lot of people have seen Oppenheimer and know at this point)
