I'm already in there, but I'm not active outside of SMFFFC. B8 disappearing might make me a little more active in some of the special interest channels, but I don't think I'd ever be a regular in the main chat channel.

There's also a B8 Facebook group if you're into that. If you worry about tying your real life 'sona to it, you can always make a pseudonymous Facebook account.

Though yeah personally if we're making a traditional forum/message board, I'd be all for it as well.

...maybe we can repurpose one of the old mafia ones.

Yeah, I knew he wasn't in charge of it anymore, but the idea was initially his.

The people of CE have also flocked to their own servers in Discord in the event that Fandom decides to start removing more boards permanently. I wouldn't be surprised if the other boards were to do the same.

I only use 1 channel in the Discord but I don't think that we could hold a full scale VGMC in there.

I'd definitely consider going if 1) A significant portion of who's left here also went over and B) We used the forum mode, which is probably as close as we'll get to replicating what we have here.

Of course, as others have pointed out, this would really just be kicking the can some number of years down the road as Discord has also already begun its enshittification so it's just a matter of time before it, too, becomes unusable.

Discord is fine, but it's just a very different thing. I have an account but rarely ever even look at it for b8.

But the whole thing with gamefaqs is that posts can get bumped back to the top of the list, that doesn't happen on Discord or Reddit.

Ah man the b8train! Almost forgot about the site evolving into a more sprite focused site over time (I think GANON was one of the main sprite rippers) and I remember having some fun live-breaking the site with weird updates constantly and then tanking the value of the sprite-buying currency with a fake stock market. Good times.

I did pick up boardEight.com a while back and could probably throw together a message board system that looks and functions like classic GameFAQs without too much trouble if there was an interest in it. Was kind of thinking of throwing something like that together as a fun side project at some point just for nostalgia sake anyway.

I already joined the Discord shortly after steiner made it, but the amount of people who wouldn't join it really surprises me. Instead of continuing the relationships that they cultivated over a decade or two, they would just bounce because the format is no longer a strict message board? I just can't wrap my head around the idea that people here not really mattering and love the "message board experience" that much.

It's not loving the message board experience. I just don't enjoy the chat room experience.

And I've already lost contact with a lot of former B8ers over time. That's part of life. If there's somebody I really want to stay in contact with, I'll find a way.

What's weird to me is people acting like discord is the only alternative. If board 8 does go down, there will be another message board to replace it.

we should probably plan that contingency now instead of later when we may not be able to. seems a very dangerous thing to just assume

The fact that there have been multiple board 8 spinoffs even while board 8 exists, and the stated preference in this topic for a message board.

Maybe. I wouldn't want a new board to compete with board 8 as long as it exists so that's what makes it tricky. Worst-case scenario if we're not prepared, the board shuts down suddenly, discord becomes the jumping-off point to inform people of a new board, and there ends up being multiple competing boards. Even in that case, whatever the best board is that comes of that should at least be decent.

My plan for the weekend is to try to throw together a retro forum frontend and see how far that gets. Should be able to recreate the classic GFaqs look with added mobile support (my day job is apps these days so I feel like I can't skip that part!)

Won't be using it aside from testing unless this place goes down, and another backup may still be a better choice.

The forum mode does it.

It really does a lot that gfaqs does. It's just kinda meh overall in every way, so it's not a very exciting prospect. But the features are decent.

Banned for who knows what reasons.

sure... but if we're saying "nah we don't need discord, we'll have something else" and people believe you too hard, then some won't join discord and they're just in the dust if not enough features of this site remain

The lack of bots and alerts and pings is exactly why Forums such as B8 cater to me much better. Sometimes Discord can be like a Twitch chat in the most annoying way.

Was thinking of starting off cheap and easy and just throwing it up on a $5 Linode, haven't worked with postgresql before so might start out with mysql. Can always have the fun of a refactor down the line if need be!

Im in it. Joined for Save My FF round start times. I would be very sad to lose this board and wouldnt go to discord. Just dont use it.

Id prefer we all migrate to a new board on this site and take it over. But thats such a longshot.

I think if B8 goes down, it's most likely that everything is going down (or at least, everything without topicality)
