Children being preyed on very rarely understand when an imbalance is present in the first place

1. Im now 37 and my opinion of the relationship hasnt changed.
2. Lots of relationships have imbalances. It doesnt necessarily mean that theyre bad. I earn nine or ten times as much as my current partner. Does that mean we shouldnt be together in your view?

I'm 49 years old and I teach 18-22 year olds every day. Though we are all adults, it is very plain to see how my engaging in a relationship with someone that age would be hugely problematic.

My wife would agree, but I digress...

An age imbalance when one party is 16 and the other is 32 is just horrifying to me. If you dont feel you were harmed by it, good. But I will never not seriously question somebody that old who gets with somebody that young.

No it wouldnt. Children, which is how I view 16 year olds, have crushes and complicated feelings towards adults all the time. It is the adults responsibility, as someone with so much more life experience, to not engage with a child coming on to them, and turn them down if it comes to that.

Even if they were older, it would be inappropriate for you to engage in a relationship with them because of your position.

Super weird that is specifically 17. Like if it was 17+ then ok, I guess there's room for negotiation even if it still creeps most people out, but breaking up with someone caused they turned 18 is even worse than Leo Dio not keeping anyone past 24 or 25. At least they've got a good 6-7 years.

As long as both are legal age, who cares. If a girl wants to date older men then that is her choice and she is grown enough to make it.

I didnt. I was responding to somebody who explicitly mentioned there being a girl involved.

I was 16-17 and they were 33-34.

Nobody needs to "ick" me over this; it was something that I recklessly started in a very tumultuous time for me, nothing untoward ever happened and we eventually realized we were in far too different stages of life for anything to pan out. What matters to me is that I wouldn't be alive today without them, and they will still always have a place in my heart. I don't have any regrets over it.

I'm glad the relationship helped you, but the concern with those relationships is quite often the older person knows immediately that it won't work out because they are in different stages of life and is using the teen until they figure it out.
