Reducing the image down to better graphics is hilarious. The first image is something I want to explore. This is a living vibrant world that feels very fleshed out and interesting. In that exploration I guarantee there are numerous things to discover and do. Also, selling the idea of the world feeling real and being immersed in it is so much more than just wow pretty graphics.

Gamers reducing everything down to a narrow view and being super pessimistic, yet another day that ends in Y.

PS1 games were ugly because of technical limitations, not because they were high art. FF7's beautiful backdrops are now actual 3D objects and all the ugly PS1 polygon bits are now nice graphics.

Be nostalgic for old FF art and sprites, not little stubby baseball bat arm Cloud.

It's a bird's eye view of an environment. What did you envision FF7 to look like? You do know there were bridges, buildings, rocks, and grass in the original, right? Midgar and Junon and shit resemble their other appearances.

I can't comment on the artistic value of the Remake since I won't be playing it anytime soon, but FF7 did imo have some unique artistic value precisely due to its technical limitations. Not in a cherry-picked shot of flat green overworld, mind you, but it was there. In particular I liked how most of the interiors were small little boxes floating in a dark void - kind of gave things a diorama-like feel and occasionally enhanced a sense of loneliness and isolation. Even something as simple as riding an elevator up to the Gold Saucer talking to an NPC about Chocobo Racing was somehow made more memorable because of this. Other games did this before due to tech limits, but FF7 was a more in-depth and cinematic experience, so sometimes it felt like a deliberate artistic choice even if it wasn't (it was especially unique to FF7 because 8 and 9 completely did away with this iirc).

It's interesting people talking about graphics, because most I've talked too or seen talking about it say they just wanted the OG but with the graphics of Remake/Rebirth. Because they can't play the original anymore because of the graphics.

The best parts of FF7 were the setting and the love triangle. The remake trilogy does a good job with fully realizing the setting by fleshing out the world. The character writing is mixed, but everything else is a hard fumble.

99% of the people bitching about the story have not finished Rebirth, I promise you that. If "not identical to original" = "bad" then they were never going to like the game, no matter what it was.

Having played it for the first time last year, I was kind of surprised how well FF7 still held up graphically.

Yeah, it's rough af in some spots, but aside from the Lego people aesthetic for charcter models, a lot of the environments still hold up and do their job.

Remember, the fact that said environments are pre-rendered probably helps with that.
Anything 3D modeled (even the characters in the FMVs) are all quite simple.

For comparison's sake, FF9 aged a little bit better on the PS1 due to improvements in graphics by the time that game came out.

When a fight breaks out around Choco Ranch, you don't see a ton of clutter. Or around Midgar when fighting robots and soldiers. The game shows you what the area looks like in cutscenes and battles. It's never a busy mess like this pic.

I'm not saying Remake/birth looks bad, but it's not necessarily an upgrade if you like what FF7 is. Just a different version.

Remake took place in mostly tight areas and corridors while Rebirth has open world environments. the lighting is more pronounced in those areas. look at the same model in, say, the mines and they look better than Remake.

Agree to disagree here. Remake's lighting seems kinda "Flat" and washed out to me. Not necessarily bad, but Rebirth seems way better.
