Sony Group Corp. has paused production of its PSVR2 headset until it clears a backlog of unsold units, according to people familiar with its plans, adding to doubts about the appeal of virtual reality gadgets.

Sales of the $550 wearable accessory to the PlayStation 5 have slowed progressively since its launch and stocks of the device are building up, according to the people, who asked not to be named as the information is not public. Sony has produced well over 2 million units of the product launched in February of last year, the people said.

Can't wait to pick one up when they're on clearance

I thought Half Life Alyx would be it

So I kinda expected more games to follow

This is an interesting part of the problem. The VR market is too small to be split in 3 (Valve, Oculus, PS). If they all worked together to boost the market initially, and THEN started competing with each other, it would accelerate the adoption a lot. They don't want to do that for obvious reasons.

But the tech is still improving really rapidly every couple years. It's fine if we stay at relatively low adoption until we get much higher resolutions and refresh rates with much less weight and heat issues, at lower cost too.

Even so, full VR will ALWAYS be niche. No one except enthusiasts and professionals will ever use a full view-covering headset. Augmented is the only mode that can get wide adoption, and technically it is already adopted by billions through AR filters on camera apps. Which means any games that use full VR, like Alyx, will always be niche. Games like Beat Saber could be converted to AR though and get massive adoption.

Every PC game already works on Oculus, right? Not sure if you can make Oculus games work on non-Oculus headsets, tho.

Also, the VR market is technically split in 4, since PSVR1 games don't work on PSVR2.

I wanted to play the whole game that way, but I still need to overcome VR motion sickness and I couldn't play it more than 20 minutes without profusely sweating and feeling like I was going to be ill.

Yeah PSVR2 has made me really sick, even with motion sickness pills. I'm used to walking around with my Vive so sitting down was a pretty bad experience.

I think VR is a waste unless you have enough room to walk around.

yeah something like Skyrim VR or RE7 VR is not a good "first VR" experience.

Definitely start with like a "job simulator" type cartoony thing. Something that doesn't even pretend to resemble reality. Build up a tolerance for the motion of VR playing things like that before tackling more realistic games.

It's not the sort of thing you can jump right into the deep end on, but once your tolerance is built up it's a fantastic way to experience those games.

Yeah my dumb ass thought that since I was good with Vive I'd be okay with Gran Turismo, the Horizon game, and No Man's Sky.

Could not play any of them seated for more than 5-10 minutes without wanting to die.

The new Assassin's Creed VR looks brilliant and exactly the kind of VR thing I've been waiting for. I was excited to try it and see what kind of anti-nausea techniques there were doing to make all that movement work.

Turns out they do nothing. You just have to be able to tank the motion sickness to play it. That reduces the player pool to like 5% of VR players, which is already like 1% of all game players.

Its too expensive to take a chance on dealing with motion sickness, especially when the games are not cheap too.

Bring the price down to even $400 and that rumored PC support and Id start thinking about it. But no one should jump on a sinking ship.

Damn that sucks. Ive never played it outside of VR, and it is absolutely the definitive VR experience imo. Itd probably be my favorite game in the series if RE1make didnt exist

I'm of the opinion that nearly everyone can learn to tolerate VR, just with different amounts of time to ramp up your individual tolerance. I'm sure there is some small% where it is actually just not feasible because of something specific with your eyes or inner ears or something, but I've had friends and relatives who had really extreme reactions at first and through enough exposure in small doses they completely overcame any issues they were having.

varied, but would start with 5-10 minute stints in non-realistic experiences. Maybe doing just 1 or 2 songs in beat saber, which can work out well if you have several people taking turns so they get a reasonable break between short time periods in the headset.

Once they can go more like half an hour I have them play A Fisherman's Tale, which is a fun puzzle game on the VR that I enjoyed a lot. Still not super realistic, but good for a level above simply standing in place and waving your arm at flying blocks:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/a/a2706632.jpg

And they can either do that entire puzzle game in around 90 minutes if they can take it, or break it into three 30~ minute chunks.

And I'm sure it's not the same for everyone, but I'd say totally 5-10 hours in VR over maybe 2 weeks of small sessions should work for most people.

Another game I'd suggest as an "integrate you into VR" intro game is I Expect You to Die.

Silly James Bond simulator where you have to do spy stuff in a little room while villains try to kill you in cartoony ways.
