Pho. Don't really like Thai food, or what I've had of it so far. Might be that I haven't been to the right restaurant or tried the right dish yet. I do love spicy food, but it just hasn't clicked yet.

Where I am, yes. Huge hmong/vietnamese population here.

On second thought, I did like Tom Yum. But not anywhere close to matching up to pho.

Pad thai if it's from somewhere that makes it more savory than sweet (but still sweet). Most places don't, but my local gas station thai place does.

I am. You generally dont want to get pho from a place that sells things that arent pho. The best pho places dont sell anything else. However, good pho isnt hard to come by.

Pad Thai is less common here, but still readily available. I also go to Thailand fairly regularly.

I wouldnt know about supermarket Pad Thai...never seen any.

From my experience, most Thai places I have been make authentic Pad Thai. Its places like Noodles and Company that sell a more American Pad Thai without the tamarind paste, like this:
  • 10 oz Thai rice noodles
  • 1 lb boneless skinless chicken breasts, sliced into small strips, or 1 lb extra large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 Tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup packed dark-brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp lime juice
  • 1 Tbsp fish sauce
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced into thin strips and strips halved
  • 1 1/2 cups matchstick carrots
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 5 green onions, whites minced, greens sliced into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 cups bean sprouts
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup unsalted peanuts, chopped
  • 1/3 cup cilantro, chopped
  • Red pepper flakes and sesame seeds (optional)
^The perfect PT imo. Fish Sauce and the lime are amazing flavor bombs without tamarind!

It's two pictures from the same website, cooking classy.

Tamarind is hard to describe, Google says sweet and sour but that doesn't tell you much. It's a pretty unique flavor.

I was going to say it kind of tastes nutty which is why I guess they tried putting crushed peanuts on the American dish.
