For my purposes, this does include action-adventures and RPGs that do normally have a lot of puzzles in them - I just mean not stuff that's explicitly meant to have hard puzzles in it like The Witness, Baba is You, etc.

The other puzzle game topic got me thinking about this and I'm trying to think of good examples. I know there's puzzles that have made people quit non-puzzle games before but I can't think of what they are right now.

As a kid I could not figure out that you had to put the Wooden Shield or whatever it was into the tree in Shining Force II. I think I rented it a dozen times and got to the same spot and just could not figure it out

This is not hard by any means, but the prompt made me remember being very stumped

not because it's a hard puzzle to solve, but because of the likelihood that someone else in your party is going to run ahead and fail it on purpose

My answer to this topic by the way is just the game Crosscode in general - the entire second half of the game is just laden with stuff that made me look up Youtube videos because it was too complicated for me to figure out.

Runescape has a pretty big emphasis on combat or skilling less so than puzzles (treasure hunts notwithstanding) but then you have quests like Within the Light or Elemental Workshop 3 and oof.

my first thought after reading the topic title, and i haven't even played silent hill 1

For games I've actually played... hard to think of many. Environmental Station Alpha had some seriously obscure endgame puzzles for a metroidvania. Oh, and Baten Kaitos deserves a mention for, not exactly a puzzle per se, but 100%ing the game requires a) keeping a useless early game card despite limited inventory space and b) letting it age for like two weeks real time despite the game only being around 50 hours long. Go ahead, try to figure that one out without a guide.

Lufia 2 was the first that came to mind. Would love to give some of those another try, since I was pretty young when I played this. They need to re-release that game...

Hearthstone had a few crazy ARG puzzle games that required the community coming together to figure them out.

Alan Wake 2 has a few puzzles that are literally just algebra questions so I thought those were funny.

Yeah the hard ones being optional is why I was able to beat the game without completing them. I do remember there being some tricky ones with regrowing grass, but I suppose I did beat those. Maybe some day...

A lotttt of action game puzzles (e.g. Uncharted) are just algebra. Anything with color mixing for example.

Firat thing that came to mind was CrossCode.

- Figuring out how to get through the greenhouse in Secret of Evermore always paused my progress for quite a while, though that doesn't necessarily count as a puzzle

- Would navigating SMB World 7-4 count as a puzzle?

- The world three little gap in TMNT for NES should count as a puzzle foreeveryone including me who doesn't realize you walk across the gap, not jump and fail.

Nothing else bouncing off my brain. I feel like there's a bunch of early Zelda puzzles that were initially very difficult to figure out, especially Zelda 1.
