My wifes been a remote worker for over two years, from day one of employment. We just had a baby and she got three months of maternity leave, ending today. With us both being permanent remote workers we made childcare arrangements based on that.

She found out from her boss yesterday that theyre back to working in the office now so her first day back is in person.

There isnt a single thing that she does in her job that cant be done from home. The office is a 40 minute drive from home so not only do we now have to figure out our childcare situation last minute, well also be spending a buttload of money on gas.

Sorry, forgot to say its 3 days a week. M-W in person, T-F from home. Which isnt completely terrible but requiring hybrid work when its not necessary is still dumb as fuck.

The can has been opened. The extroverts are going to learn that there's a group out there that will see a "collaborative, friendly group in the office" as an immediate pass when other jobs start to have Millennial/Gen Z management that realizes WFH worked.

If you desperately need to talk, make yourself an imaginary friend and leave us alone!

Hopefully. There are six people on her team. Three live within 15 minutes of the office, two are in different states so are legitimately permanently remote, and then shes 40 minutes from the office.

The two remote folks do the same shit she does. So theres no reason she cant stay remote other than the new executive team being out of touch rich bastards.

You have to work 8 hours regardless. People like me have 45-minute commutes (more like 55-1hr+ commutes with traffic being busier now) which means at least an hour and a half of my day is spent in a car. On top of that, there's more prep time in the morning to get ready. On top of that, if I arrive after 8:30, parking is $25 along with the gas money... it's not worth.

That does sound bad. I have a half hour drive from work which doesnt bother me too much. It gives me a chance to mentally digest my day and switch gears before I get home. Double the drive would be a bit much though.

I guess you like fighting traffic to get to and from work. And if you don't have to deal with traffic issues then consider yourself lucky and privileged.

I guess part of the difference is I dont fight traffic. I really dont get upset if traffic is moving slow or I catch all the red lights. It is what it is and getting mad doesnt help anything.

My job offers voluntary overtime, so I regularly clock in at least 30 minutes early and clock out 30-45 minutes late to get caught up on stuff.

If I have to drive 30-60 minutes to and from work (varies greatly due to the nonstop construction here) then Im not going to work that overtime because thats now eating into time with my family. So if my job goes back to the office Id be taking a massive pay cut between gas and lack of overtime.

I get that some people like working in an office for various reasons and thats fine. So let them work in office. Dont force the rest of us to.

Thats fair, and the way it works on my team is new hires do go into the office (if theyre local) for the first 3-5 days to get all their stuff set up properly, then from there its permanent voluntary hybrid work. Stay home, go in, whatever you prefer.

Sounds like youve been lucky enough to never work for a company that writes you up because you were late due to not having psychic abilities letting you know to leave an hour early to avoid the car wreck on the main road to work

I had a very similar situation come about. I've never been one of those fuck the last generation people but this one really got on my nerves.

Heaven forbid ANYTHING good come from the pandemic. If people can do 100% of their job from home. Why in the world would you want you want them in some shithole building? No reason.

Just old school do the same shit over and over never evolve nonsense.

I love the logic of it too. In 2020 people were acting like COVID was gonna kill EVERYONE. Then in 2021 when covid was actually serious with the numbers everyone was like MEH. Now in 2023 everyones like lets pretend this all NEVER happened!

Assuming we don't die from nuclear war and tech continues to evolve over and over. We are eventually going to be living like this anyways. So why resist? Just someone power tripping. All the examples I see of why people should "go back to work" are always out of context nonsense or comparisons to jobs that are physically impossible from home. Well no shit jobs that CANT be done from home shouldnt be...

My brother in law works HR for the government in DC. Has been remote for a couple years now. I think theyre (not him, his bosses) are pushing to get people back in the office. His boss told him the reason is literally the economy in DC. With all those people remotely working, money isnt being spent in DC that was previously. Its so stupid.

Unfortunately I dont work from home. I used to work somewhere it took me an hour- hour and a half to get there and 2 hours to get home. It was miserable. Did that for 2 years. Now work 15 min away. A lot better. Id still jump on anything remote that paid a similar salary in a heartbeat.

Yeah, there are too many advantages to WFH for me not to want to do that for pretty much the rest of my career. I wouldn't mind a requirement to go in once a week but any more than that and I'd be looking for a new job.

Im honestly so sick and tired of this country and the psychotic work fetish it has. Every single job that can be done remotely, should be done remotely. I get to work from home one day a week and its like the only day of the week where Im not completely miserable while working. If people want to waste their time and be in an office? Great, let them. It should be an option.

I feel your wifes pain, TC. I used to have to drive 40 - 45 minutes (one way) when there was a location in my company that was 20 minutes down the road from me. I fucking hated it.

See, that's all the more reason why office space should be replaced with housing. That'll bring money back to those areas just instead of businesses serving people who work in the area it would be people who live in the area.

I get that it's not easy to convert office space into condos but we're in a situation where we have too much office space and not enough housing.

It's wrotten into our contract that we get WFH, but it can be take away because of "office need". So guess what happened? Now I gotta wait at least 6 months as this winds through arbitration--whenever the union decides to file the grievance, that is--and meanwhile we all gotta report in.

God, do I feel salty.
