TC, your wife can just keep working from home. Make up something. You already got a golden ticket of an excuse, your child. Kid is sick, grandparents need in-home care, etc. All the while she is willing to fulfill all job duties remotely.

It is very rare for companies to fire people because they say to return to office but you don't while still doing the job.

Partly the managerial types being control freaks and partly companies entering into often times decades long lease arrangements on their offices are to blame

I honestly dont understand this mindset. The last place I would want to work is at home and I say that as an introvert.

Lunch break to chill, play games, go grocery shopping, etc.
Do laundry while working
Do dishes while working
Meal prep while working
Work in whatever attire you want
Work at a desk or on your couch
Blast music whenever you want
No forced office politics
Travel and work

There's literally no benefit to working in an office if your job can be done remotely. You get so much more of your life back.

Sounds like your problem was deciding to breed, not the job requiring her to go back to the office, partially.

For real. Not even the wear and tear on your vehicle, but I get back 2 hours a day from not having to drive into work anymore, as I suspect most people are in similar places where they save like an hour a day. That's massive.

You have to work 8 hours regardless. People like me have 45-minute commutes (more like 55-1hr+ commutes with traffic being busier now) which means at least an hour and a half of my day is spent in a car. On top of that, there's more prep time in the morning to get ready. On top of that, if I arrive after 8:30, parking is $25 along with the gas money... it's not worth.

Imagine people that show up to work every day.

I bet alot of the people here working from home instead of the office actually depend on amazon workers (people who show up to work).

Related to this, you get to sleep more which is great for your physical and mental health.

And if you accidentally sleep in and wake up 5 minutes before your shift? No biggie, hop over to your home office and clock in on time, you can shower after work or on lunch.

Do that when you work in an office and it is literally impossible for you to be at work on time.

I guess part of the difference is I dont fight traffic. I really dont get upset if traffic is moving slow or I catch all the red lights. It is what it is and getting mad doesnt help anything.

I see other people swerving around and honking their horns like maniacs who look like their heads are about to explode. I dont understand this mindset either.

Sounds like youve been lucky enough to never work for a company that writes you up because you were late due to not having psychic abilities letting you know to leave an hour early to avoid the car wreck on the main road to work
