There was one back in 2014, but that was the only year they did it. GTA5 won, over Halo MCC, Pokemon ORAS, Last of Us, and Tomb Raider 2013.

Skyward Sword is a really good game that kind of gets unfairly dunked on because it is generally seen as the weakest 3D Zelda (I agree but that is a very high bar), was the entry before Breath of the Wild and released at a time of relative weakness for Nintendo. However in seriousness I think BotW was really just adapting its concepts to an open design not rejecting it. And then TotK shows you can have those amazing linear experiences and set pieces in an open space. I dont think theres a tension between the old style and the new style, I think they can absolutely work as one.

On a totally different note thinking about Nest Performance, just randomly found out that FFXVI and Alan Wake II have the same performance director. Just casually directing possibly the two best acted games of the year!

Now this is something that deserves it's own Category.

The VA director is arguably more important than the talent of the VAs themselves in some cases.

I know we kinda razz on the TGA for being the dumb schlock entertainment awards show that it is, but I'm a firm believer that this sort of thing really does matter to the industry and I think it's good discussion fodder to have landed on an awards show that we consider to be like, canonical in the sort of way the oscars are - a similarly dumb schlock entertainment awards show. I'm glad we have it. Honestly, it's about as close to consensus GOTY choices as we're going to get - I think they do better than the oscars do at this.

I played 40 hours of Horizon and I just....can't imagine.

But my bias is obvious. I don't even know why I tried to like that game either.

No matter how jaded you are, if you're nominated in an award show you're gonna care.

As someone whose games will never get an award, I'm cool with sitting back and enjoying my jade. I'm also glad I'm not one of those devs, directors, or big wigs who has decided to tie their self worth to an awards show.

It's interesting though that Nintendo says it was a business strategy to go for the award show. They've clearly gotten many awards in the past, but I guess they didn't care until there was business value. That's why they're talking about the Nintendo big wigs. I wonder what the grunts who had to place 4 million blades of grass think.

Gaming is an interesting industry in that the critics and casuals are in agreement more often than not. With movies, Marvel Movie #82 can be adored by audiences, make a trillion dollars, and not come anywhere close to a spot on the Oscars list. Gaming does have some examples of that (see: all the popular mobile garbage) but there's overall a larger overlap in popularity and critical respect. Many things that sell well are beloved by reviewers.

With that in mind, I'd say TGA are actually a pretty good representation of what 'gamers' as a whole feel. It isn't perfect, but no award show is going to be perfect. That's not even possible unless literally everyone is in agreement on a subject.

Absolutely, especially as performances in games get more complex. For the two games mentioned Alan Wake II has performance capture and extended live action sequences while FFXVI has facial capture in addition to voice work.

Hmm I think this is broadly true but the voterbase for the Oscars is different as thats Academy members while TGA is press (with a minority from the public vote). The equivalent of the Oscars in terms of who votes on it would be DICE, TGA is more like Critics Choice in that way. Still, I think the Oscars are slowly dropping their objections to popular films since they expanded the membership a few years ago and these days are usually a lot closer to public sentiment. Then looking in the other direction you have a film like Oppenheimer making a billion dollars while The Marvels struggles. So I think theres movement in both ways.

Of course, the ratios don't necessarily stay the same with TotK gone (I can see SMO coming out on top), but yeah. Zero Dawn got a lot of #1s, somehow... though I guess most of them are publications I haven't heard of an readers choices, so maybe not!

Nier Automata's success story is insane. People meme on Horizon for getting overshadowed by BotW, but guess what else decided to release around then?

Then it sold consistently well for years on end, building up a following through sheer word of mouth. Its lifetime total sales might end up exceeding FF16! One of the biggest surprise success stories of the last decade. Off the top of my head, it's second only to Baldur's Gate 3 in that regard.

And discounting stuff like Fortnite, but, lol.

I think it's still Square's best-selling game released post-FF15! Very slightly ahead of KH3 and DQ11 which are pretty much tied, and about even with FF7R.

Ill never forget back in 2017 when the game awards snubbed nier automata, cuphead, and sonic mania for player unknown battlegrounds

Nier Automata is such a good game. Deserves every ounce of love and success it has had and then some. 2Bs design is also pretty much perfection

PUBG kind of made sense at the time but aged like absolute milk. Fortnite ate its lunch comprehensively, the novelty wore off and people realised how broken it was to the point of launching a fix PUBG campaign, and people generally turned on it compared to better entrants in the genre. The game had a big moment which has long since passed. If you redo that year again Automata absolutely takes its place and if you extended it to six like it is now Cuphead gets in.

The one year I decided to try out listening to Giant Bomb was GotY 2017 talks and then promptly ended when they gave PUBG the title lol

Literally the most infamous and gruelling discussions they had that made everybody involved so miserable (and unfortunately turned the fandom so toxic) they never truly went back to doing it that way! Though now you have people going you know 2017 was great actually!

PUBG is still more fun to me because of the realism of the weapons there's a real horror element to it that you don't get with other battle royales

PUBG used to be great. Kinda lost interest a bit when they started adding way too many guns and attachments though. Plus the game started to become unplayable on PC.

I don't think Giant Bomb has ever been the same since that PUBG win. Website just didn't mean the same thing to me anymore. Doesn't help that the game completely faded into irrelevance basically immediately after that.

Usually the screaming and arguing of their GotY was the best part but it just wasn't the same that year. Abby didn't help. I liked Abby a lot in general but she was really, really bad in GotY, and you could argue her presence lead to the format change that made GotY a total boring snozefest for the years that follow (I don't even listen to it anymore)

Thats not fair at all. Abby didnt stonewall any more than Brad (and unlike Brad she had somebody backing her up) but got a mountain of harassment for it because you know why. She was also anti-PUBG If the reaction led to a change (and I think it had been brewing anyway) that ones on some of the fans for losing their minds. Of course the format has changed numerous times over the years before and after with many great moments since. I would argue that if they had the current format for ranking the list then, nothing bad would have happened and it would have been a more enjoyable listen with a better end list. Though theres no saving Best World.

Hey, I was the one who did the Eurovision calculations for previous years they read out on the Bombcast and the consensus from both the crew and the audience was oh these lists are actually better! In 2017 Mario Odyssey would have won, Nier Automata would have been number two, Cuphead would indeed have been higher, and to play to your own personal tastes BotW would have fallen to number five! Also Saints Row would have won in 2011.

Last year's GotY was good. Only bad moment I remember was Tam and Lucy arguing for Overwatch 2, which even they seem to like less than OW1.

Sorry but I had absolutely no tolerance for her trying to shoehorn that Game Grumps Dating Sim into every single category every single days and treating it like it was the second coming of christ.

She also went out of her way to put Nier down every chance she girl and almost never gave any actual reason.

Ive since deleted my Reddit account (thank goodness) which had a different name anyway so you have to take my word for it lol.

I dont remember too much OW2 chat but Lucy and Tam have since turned on it I think, and it didnt make the list. Thats what can happen with these multiplayer games, see also Halo Infinite.

The best moment was definitely Bakalar refusing to let go of Spiderheck like his life depended on it then giving it zero points haha. The drama is still there, just less frustrating!

Edit: Also Dream Daddy made the list in the Eurovision method, I think it made the list if you tally up everyones top tens, it made the actual list and Vinny was also high on it. It clearly had the support to get on there. Wild that this still gets brought up.

But also, while I disagree with Abby on Nier, Jeff Gerstmann did that to games all the time, except actually worse because at least Abby played a good 8-10 hours of Nier, Jeff never even learned how to use the translator in Outer Wilds yet still trashed the game. Hell, look at his takes on Psychonauts 2 the last year he did it its much the same. The question is really why did Abby get such different treatment. I love Jeff but he was much worse about this! Either way its another argument for Eurovision because it avoids tearing down games you didnt get into.

I didn't play it so, so I can't judge, but where the big moments in that game really that much better than what Automata/Persona 5/Yakuza 0 offered?

Wolfenstein did have some pretty good moments. Better than Persona 5 imo, probably not better than the other 2 though

I've been reluctant to check out Dream Daddy because I get the same "this isn't like those OTHER dating sims" vibes from it that most western romance visual novels give off, completely dismissive of the rest of the genre

They broke Wolfenstein moments out into their own category, but still had the regular best moment category which Nier won. Nier definitely had enough moments to support its own category as well (like six were nominated), Mario too and it kind of did with the Best Capture category.

I dont think the big moments from Persona 5 are anywhere near as good as those from Wolfenstein or Nier or Mario. What are even the best moments from that game? Its a great game but not really many wow, great moment parts.
