it would be pretty funny to drop a full modern HD, original Nomura-style (character into this game, to just go the total opposite direction of Culex. An ersatz Sephiroth with multiple forms.

A part of me is hesitant on this change, but I actually like saying Speardovich out loud, meanwhile I'm still not sure how even after 25 years, one pronounces Yaridovich.

I never understood how to say "Yaridovich" as a kid, anyway, and I had no idea what it meant or why he wasn't named after weapons like the others.

The funny thing is that it likely was supposed to be Speardovich all along, since all of the other languages are basically that, and the NA localizer just screwed up.

I think my main beef with Speardovich is I always thought of the d as the end of a syllable and now it is definitely the start of one. Also I just like the flow of the extra syllable.

but I get why they would change it, the original name was totally untranslated from Japanese for some reason.

Am I the only one who doesn't remember the names from the original? Like other than the Axem Rangers and Booster. Then again, it's probably been more than ten years since I last played it.

Since "Yari" wasn't a real word to kid me, and there's not really anything similar to base it on, I mainly just said "Yar-doh-vich." That's probably why Speardovich seems fine to me, it's similar to how I said Yaridovich as a kid to begin with.

So I guess the Guy Fieri dude in the Volcano is getting his name changed too, I think it was Kinopio

Shy Away is confirmed renamed to Beezo, and Mukumuku is renamed to Thropher. also the Psychopath ability got renamed to something boring. (this stuff came from the UK Nintendo website)

I wonder if we'll get better-translated versions of Psychopath dialog too - a lot of it is weirdly translated because of weird cultural humor and such that could have been done better, kind of like how a lot of names in the game are odd because they're translated directly from Japanese. This is nothing against Ted Woolsey, mind you, who is one of the all-time greats of the early days of actually translating a game's script well - much like his other works in the day he delivered a SMRPG script that's fun, punchy, and mostly spelling/grammar error free. But he was given grueling turnaround times for these things and didn't receive a lot of direction as far as like style guides are concerned (you know, 'this is the name this character normally has in English, don't translate their name from Japanese' that kind of stuff) so there was just a lot that he didn't know and didn't have time to research which they can fix now. I bet the script is gonna be touched up QUITE a bit.

I remember playing this before any FF, and being sad Culex wasnt a real character.

If the name is more accurate to the original intention, I'm good with it. Smithy's minions have weapon-themed names, so it works.

I get the joke is he's a 2D enemy in a 3D world, but this feels kinda lame/lazy to me. Hopefully he has another form.

Yeah, the script looks basically unchanged. The only things different are likely to be major fixes.

Which honestly... I find kind of disappointing. Like, the original script was fine, and great in some cases (there are key quotes that I would hope they'd never dare change), but in hindsight it was very clearly a translation that was good for its time but a bit dated now. It's not that it was bad, or riddled with mistakes (like say, FF7), but it could have used a little more polish. I would have preferred more cleaning up of the script, especially since the original is still available to be enjoyed for those who want it. As someone who loves this game so much, I would have looked forward to experiencing a touched up script because I would be able to clearly appreciate and enjoy the differences made.

I don't have a chance to watch the video until later, but does it show any of the dialogue that makes references to things? That's what I'm most curious about. I figured most of the rest of the dialogue would stay the same, but I mainly wonder if they'll change/update the references in any way. Like Para said, I'm curious about stuff like the Psychopath dialogue, or if Mario still thinks he's Bruce Lee, stuff like that.

The one thing I did notice is that the Shysters are now Shymores, so it at least gives him and his flunkies a common thread. But yeah, his proportions are more dagger like anyway.

Changing the name "Shyster" was deeeefinitely a good call, that one didn't even occur to me until now lol

I liked the name Mack because of the reference, but I'll be honest, Claymorton is a pretty cool name.

I can't tell if caring about enemy names so much is a bit or not
